INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

After years of struggling with starting and finishing tasks, I was so fed up with myself not
being able to finish simple tasks, that I started reading books and articles about
productivity, getting things done (GTD) and the human mind.

Later I created a blog about lifehacking and other subjects related to stress-free
productivity. To learn, write and teach learn more about such topics.

In my personal journey to mastery, I have adopted several methods and mindsets for
improving productivity. Some of these got implemented in my daily habitual life, others
did not. Because they were not simple enough, or they didnt fit my lifestyle.

04/24 RANDOMTASK
INTRODUCTION

Personally, I often neglected doing the simple, daily, routine tasks. Hours were spent
making to-do lists for these kind of tasks. More valuable time was wasted on deciding
which task I should start with. I often lost momentum and got distracted when switching
between tasks.

I know this step is hard. Especially when tasks are boring or unchallenging in any other
way.

This eBook presents a method and app that helps increasing productivity while
minimizing downtime between tasks.

So give it a try and make tackling your daily chores fun!

I hope RandomTask will bring you as much value as it has brought to me.

THE METHOD
BACKGROUND, HOW IT WORKS, EXAMPLES

06/24
A QUICK SUMMARY OF GETTING THINGS DONE

If you are already familiar with Getting Things Done, you can skip this section, or keep on
reading to freshen things up.

Getting Things Done -or GTD- is a framework for organizing and tracking your tasks and
projects. Its aim is to make you have 100% trust in a system for collecting tasks, ideas,
and projects.

It works by simply maintaining lists, which every person with pen and paper can do.
In this system you end up making the following the following lists:

"In"-box
Next Actions
Waiting for
Projects
Some day/maybe

These lists will be reviewed regularly and form the backbone of the GTD system.

07/24 RANDOMTASK
RANDOMTASKS FOCUS IN GTD

In this method the focus is on the Next-Actions list.

Some of these actions and tasks are low-priority and not time-bound. It doesn't matter
in what order you do them; they simply have to get done by the end of the day.

Simple, routine, repetitive, household-chores and other tasks of everyday living are
all low-priority tasks.

Examples are listed in the next chapter.

For a more detailed overview of how to process new information check the flowgram on
the next page.

SO.. HOW DOES RANDOMTASK WORK?

Using this method is very simple. Follow the steps.

1. Get a piece of (digital) paper.

2. Write down your low-priority tasks numbered 1-6.

If you want, you can put a reward on one of the numbers.

3. Find a dice and throw it.

4. Check the number on the dice. The corresponding task should

be done.

5. When you finish your task, throw again!

11/24 RANDOMTASK
WHY?

People spent a lot of time thinking about tasks they should start. The so called Zeigarnik
effect states that people remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed
tasks.

RandomTask helps getting rid of these uncompleted tasks.

For more effect, and to make it somewhat more fun, you can put a reward on one of the
numbers (e.g. 6).

Adding a reward helps you doing tasks, even when you have low energy, feel reluctant or
depressed. The reward's purpose is to stimulate the center in your brain that is active when
you receive a reward.

The possibility to get the reward when throwing the dice is exciting. But when you do not
throw the reward-number, the task you did roll should be tackled first.

RANDOMTASK APP INTRO

Sometimes no die or paper can be found. Good apps that

include a simple to do list and a dice rolling function were
neither available.

The idea to create an Android application to solve this problem

was born.

Randomtask for Android might be the best productivity app for

you!

It is a tool for getting tasks done in a easy, fun and fast way. It
is a simple way of increasing your productivity.

The app is under constant development and will receive new

exciting features in the near future.

19/24
DOUBLE DICE REROLL DICE

Do this when you want to split up tasks in Throw again when the task is already done.
smaller subtasks, for fun's sake or because
you just need to get a lot of tasks done.

Example: 3. Dishes
You can subtask this by:
1. Dishes plates
2. Dishes Mugs
3. Dishes other
4. Dishes cutlery
5. Roll again (filler)
6. Tea (reward)

So let's say you roll a 3. CUSTOM DICE

Which states Dishes.
You throw again for the subtask. Throw acustom-numbered dice.
This is the next subtasks that needs to be
done.

CONCLUSION

21/24
CONCLUSION

WhileGetting Things Done gives you a framework for achieving a mental state
of 'mind like water' and stress-free productivity, RandomTask serves as a tool
for doing these 'next tasks' and actions.

Todaypeople consume more information than ever before, whilewe still need
to be productive to keep up in the fast pace world we create for ourselves.

Tools like RandomTask can help you in doing tasks, even while feeling down,
unmotivated or bored.

One last advice: implement only methods and habits you find useful. Keep it
simple. Dont fall for the trap (we all do from time to time) in which you
actively procrastinate all your valuable time.

22/24 RANDOMTASK
CONCLUSION

I hope the introduction of the RandomTask method and RandomTask app

helps you in becoming the GTD-master you are striving to be..
