T H E CITATION OF MANUSCRIPTS IN R E C E N T

In reviews of Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece 26th edition

( = N-A 2 6 ) and the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament
third edition ( = U B S 3 ) I raised the possibility that not all the
manuscripts contained in the lists of witnesses found in the in
troductory matter were used in the apparatus of either edition. 1 I
wrote that such a possibility could only be confirmed by a thorough
search of the apparatuses concerned. This study represents the
results of such a search. In addition to examining the manuscripts
used in N-A 2 6 and U B S 3 other works, such as Aland's Synopsis and
Metzger's Commentary on the Greek New Testament, have been
similarly treated. O n the face of it the expanded list of mss. in U B S 3
looks like a combination of those mss. cited in the earlier UBS edi
tions and those added to B. M . Metzger's companion guide insofar
as the edition of the commentary printed before U B S 3 appeared
had as an appendix a supplementary list of mss. not found in U B S 2 .
Insofar as Aland's Synopsis in both the Greek and the diglott edi
tions is regularly reissued in new editions it also seemed worthwhile
examining its use of manuscripts.
During the time this article was being prepared the 13th edition
of Huck's Synopsis appeared. In order to provide a fruitful com
parison between this and Aland's Synopsis its evidence has also been
examined.
T h e trilingual edition of the New Testament prepared by J .
O'Callaghan has also been added to the statistical surveys, and so
too has the Oxford Testament by Souter although in neither case
has the apparatus been scoured. The material used in the Interna
tional Greek New Testament Project's apparatus to Luke has also
been included in the statistical surveys.

The article would not have been written had it not been for the
painstaking searches and meticulous investigations undertaken on
my behalf by the Revd. James Miller of Bury St. Edmunds. It was
he who was responsible for the tables which form the appendices to
this article. I wish to convey publicly here my heartfelt appreciation
for his endeavours.
The article has two purposes. The first is to monitor the major
printed editions undertaken in this survey (N-A 2 6 , U B S 2 , U B S 3 ,
Syn 1 0 with Greek-English Syn 3 , H - G 1 3 and Metzger 's Commen
tary) to see which mss. are used in each apparatus. As will be ap
parent, the list of mss. so used differs from the list of mss. in the in
troductory matter. The other purpose is an analysis of the different
printed editions comparing their use of the manuscripts available.
For this comparative study B o v e r - O ' C , Souter and I G N T P are in
cluded.
The editions used in this survey are abbreviated in the following
way:

O'Callaghan in Nuevo Testamento Trilinge (Madrid 1977).
In the discussions below u n i q u e ' when referring to a Greek New
Testament ms. means that of the editions above only one lists or
uses the ms. in question. A ms. is described as a 'sundry' if it is not
included in the lists of mss. provided by the editor.
Information about the contents and the Gregory numbers of mss.
has generally come from K. Aland Kurzgefasste Liste der Griechischen
Handschriften des Neuen Testaments (Berlin 1963) = A N T F 1, referred
to below as Liste. Corrections and supplementary details come from

Neutestamentlichen Textforschung 1970-71, 1972-4, 1975-6 (Mnster).

UNCIALS
26
N-A

Although the introduction to this edition (p. 47*) states that we

are now entering the age of the minuscules it is in its presentation of
the uncials that this apparatus is most useful. Of the 225 uncials
listed in Appendix 1A 210 are used in the apparatus. There is thus a
93.3% usage. Of those used 178 are class I uncials, 1 is class II, 8
class III and 23 class V. In addition there are four uncials found in
the apparatus yet absent from the Appendix. These are 034 075
0129 and 0141. 7
Taking 0274 as the highest numbered uncial 8 only 22 uncials
have not been made use of in N-A 2 6 . Of these, 12 do not appear in
any of the editions used in this survey. They are 0149 (now part of

0257 0258 and 0194 (now part of 070). Of these 0152 is a talisman,
0248 is difficult to read and 0157 0158 0168 0205 are lost. The re-
maining 10 uncials absent from both Appendix I and the apparatus
of N-A 2 6 are found in other editions:056 (in UBS and
Bover-O'C) 0150 and 0151 (used by M C p. 661 in discussing the
position of Hebrews in the canon) 0142 (used frequently by UBS
and M C but also in Souter and Bover-O'C) 0211 (in M C , Syn 10 ,
H-G, I G N T P ) , 055, 0144, and 0154 (used by H-G) 0153 (ostraca
quoted by Syn 10 and H-G at Luke 22) 0192 formerly /1604 (used by
M C discussing Mark 15:34).
Again taking 0274 as the highest numbered uncial there are 276
uncials (092 and 0121 are divided into (a) and (b)). Deducting the
22 uncials not used by N-A 2 6 this edition therefore refers to 254 un-
cials in its Appendix or apparatus. The difference between this total
and the 229 (totalling the 225 uncials in the Appendix and the 4
sundries found in the apparatus) is accounted for by the allegedly
subsumed uncials.
These subsumed uncials cause problems. The manuscripts con-
cerned are 0113 0125 0139 ( = 029)0117 ( = 063) 074 090 ( = 064)
0110 0124 0178 0179 0180 0190 0191 0202 ( = 070) 084 ( = 073)
0112 0235 ( = 083) 092b ( = 087) 9 0123 ( = 095) 0138 ( - 0102)
0119 ( = 0106) 0137 ( = 0136) 0224 ( = 0186) 0215 ( = 059) 092a
( = 089). The mss. not in brackets give us the 25 uncials
represented by the difference between 254 and 229 in the preceding
paragraph. P 3 3 extant in Acts 15 is now said to be part of P 5 8 extant
in Acts 7. In N-A 2 6 's Appendix the figure P 3 3 subsumes P 5 8 and in
the apparatus to Acts 7 P 3 3 is found. O n this analogy we would
assume that only the figures in brackets above would be found
in the apparatus replacing the figures for the uncials said to be
subsumed. This is however not the case. The analogy of P 3 3 and
P 5 8 is not followed. In the apparatus the traditional numbers are
maintained even though the contents of the uncials said to be sub-
sumed are listed in the Appendix under the dominant number only.
For example the contents of the fragments originally numbered
0113 0125 and 0139 appear under the entry 029 in the Appendix.
In the Liste the contents are listed under each separate entry. N-A 2 6

This identification is not given in K. Aland Kurzgefasste Liste but is to be found
in the Korrekturen und Ergnzungen in Materialen zur neutestamentlichen Hand-
schriftenkunde p. 6 ( = ANTF 3).

places 189 uncials in the Class I category. It is difficult to tell how

many of the 25 uncials allegedly subsumed by other manuscripts
ought also to be listed as constants. The appendix does not asterisk
the subsumed uncials which are in square brackets in the list. A
careful analysis of the apparatus has therefore been undertaken and
has revealed not only that the traditional numbers have been
preserved but that in general the subsumed numbered uncials are
constants. T h u s 0113 is cited as frequently in the verses for which it
is extant as 029 is. There are however two exceptions. 092a (said to
have been taken over by 089) is not used in the apparatus, nor is
0215 (said to have been swallowed by 059). These two could be
added to the eleven Class I uncials listed by N-A 2 6 but not used in
the apparatus.
A problem created by the citing of the contents for the
manuscripts in the Appendix is that anomalies occur between this
list and the Liste. Under the entry 029 one deduces that 0139 is ex
tant at among other places Luke 6:18-26. The Liste states 6:17-6
(sic). Assuming the Liste means vv. 17-26 the problem over verse 17
remains. Is 0139 extant here? Is the Liste correct or the Appendix?
084 which supposedly subsumes 073 is extant at Matt. 14:19-15:8
and 073 at Matt. 14:28-31. Not only is the Liste inconsistent with its
normal practice insofar as here the contents of 084 seem to include
those of 073 but the Liste differs from the Appendix. The latter
shows the contents as Matt. 14:19-35, 15:2-8. The apparatus seems
to be more accurate in that 084 is not used in 14:36 or 15:1: this
deduction assumes however that 084 is a constant and this is not
confirmed by the Appendix. O u r confidence in accepting the
reliability of the contents of the manuscripts in the Appendix is
diminished. 083 now seen as part of 0112 and 0235 is said in the
Appendix to contain among other verses J o h n 4:34-49. The Liste
has 4:34-50, which is surely correct as the apparatus to N-A 2 6 cites
083 at J o h n 4:50. The contents of 0123 subsumed by 095 in the ap
pendix differ from the contents of 0123 in the Liste (where it is
misprinted as 0132 in footnote 10 p . 47). Here we have no help
from the apparatus. 0123 appears only at Acts 2:26 and 095 at Acts
3:3, 7. 095 is shown as a constant. The one citation of 0123 does not
encourage our taking this as a constant. 0106 cum 0119 is said in
the Appendix to contain inter alia Matt. 13:32. Neither ms. has this
verse according to the Liste. The apparatus at Matt. 13:32 does not
help us here. It would therefore have been helpful if the contents
T H E CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 105

column of the Appendix had listed the contents of each separate ms.
especially as the separate numbers have been preserved in the
apparatus. Where a manuscript appears in this Appendix in square
brackets no contents are given at that entry nor are we told to which
category the subsumed ms. belongs.
We have seen that some of the numbered uncials are not used by
N-A 2 6 are lost mss. Their absence on these grounds is explicable
although the following manuscripts are used and these are describ-
ed as lost, part lost or inaccessible: 062 0126 0145 0146 0147 0156
0234 0253 0255 0174 0229 0230 0274. 10 All these are constant
witnesses. 0159 also lost is used by N-A but not as a constant. (0155
0156 0157 0158 and 0159 were all once in Damascus: 0155 is listed
by N-A 2 6 but not actually used in the apparatus: 0157 0158 are not
used by any edition in this survey). From the above only 0174 is
unique to N-A 2 6 . All the other uncials in the above list are found in
other editions in this survey.
The "missing" uncials 034 075 0129 and 0141 are absent from
the Appendix. Had they appeared there would they have been con-
stants? 034 appears only at Matt. 20:27 which suggests it would not
be class I, 075 however could be class I as it is cited in the apparatus
to I Cor. 15:29, 31, 47, 49, 50, 51 bis, 52, 54, 55; 16:2 bis, 4, 6 bis,
7, 8, 15, 19 bis, 23, 24. 0141 appears at J n . 3:12, 7:52, 8:14, 9:14,
11:45: its classification is difficult to assign on this showing. 11 0129
extant at I Cor. 1:22-29 appears in the apparatus once at I Cor.
1:28 and again its classification is unclear. Lacking this information
it is impossible to assess the apparatus where these mss. are extant
and to argue if they are to be counted as mss. working with or
against M. These four uncials are not referred to in the Introduc-
tion pp. 48*-53* but their absence there may like their absence
from the Appendix be due to an oversight, so one ought not to
assume they are not constants for that reason.
It is difficult to assign accurately the allegedly subsumed uncials
to a class. Similarly as we have seen it is impossible to classify the
four sundries. Of the 225 other uncials in the Appendix to N-A 2 6
189 are asterisked as Class I. Only 8 uncials are listed as Class III

10
Although the whereabouts of 0274 are queried in the Appendix its contents
are given i n j . M. Plumley and C. H. Roberts, "An Uncial Text of St. Mark in
Greek from Nubia''JTS XXVll (1976) pp. 34-45. Professor Plumley, who found
the ms. tells me it is in the Cairo Museum.
11
The fourth reprint lists it as a Class V ms.
106 J. . ELLIOTT

(i.e. uncials cited only when they differ from M according to In

troduction pp. 50* 51* 52* 53* and identified in the Appendix with
an asterisk enclosed in rounded brackets). These are 017, 018, 020,
022, 024, 026, 036, 037.
Only one uncial is Class II, that is it is cited only as a constant for
part of the New Testament. This is 025 identified as Class II in the
Appendix by an asterisk enclosed in square brackets. P. 52* and p.
692 indicate that 025 is constant only for the Catholic epistles.
There is dispute in the edition about the status of 025 in the rest of
the New Testament, p. 692 shows it is Class III in Paul and Revela
tion, that is it is cited where it differs from M. It seems to be Class V
for Acts, where it is also extant. P. 52* agrees by showing 025 as
Class HI for Paul but in Revelation 025 is shown as a constant as in
the Catholic epistles on p. 53*. If p. 53* is correct then the brackets
around the asterisk on p. 692 need to be removed before Revela
tion.
Eleven Class I mss. in N-A 2 6 are not found in the apparatus.
These are 057 077 0118 0164 0166 0200 0256 0259 0263 0264 0268.
Four Class V uncials are similarly not found in the apparatus (031
045 080 0155). Most are small fragments such as 077 (Acts
13:28-29) 0164 (Mark 12:20-21) 0166 (Acts 28:30-41; J a s . 1:11)
0200 (Matt. 2:20-21) 0256 (John 6:32-33, 35, 37) 0259 (I Tim.
1:4-7). The relevance of listing manuscripts not encountered in the
apparatus is doubtful. Most of these manuscripts are not listed in
any other edition although H - G 1 2 and Syn 1 0 include the gospel
fragments in their lists. With the exception of 0256 however these
uncials are not used in the apparatus to Syn 1 0 . The lost ms. 0155 is
10
listed and used by UBS, Syn and H-G.
The following non-gospel uncials are unique to N-A 2 6 : [077] 098
0140 [0166] 0173 0174 0183 0185 0198 0199 0219 0222 0227 0228
0240 0241 0245 0247 0251 0252 0254 [0259] 0261 0262 0270.
Square brackets indicate that the ms. seems not to be used in the
apparatus. All these mss. are constants (Class I). [057] and 0169
are listed elsewhere only by Bover-O'C. 0163 is listed elsewhere on
ly by Souter. 0224 (said to be subsumed by 0186) and 0123 (said to
be subsumed by 095) are also unique to N-A but because of the
peculiar way in which these subsumed mss. are listed it is not ob
vious to which classification they belong.

12
H-G ignores 0256 in its list also.
T H E CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 107

There are no gospel mss. unique to N-A 2 6 , although 072 and

0233 were not used by Syn 10 or UBS. As far as 0233 is concerned
the location of the ms. is said to be Athens in the Liste and Mnster
according to N-A 2 6 . Its transfer to West Germany doubtless en-
couraged its use. 0249 extant in Matt. 25:1-9 is in fact used in the
apparatus to Syn 10 but is not included in its introductory list of mss.
072 0233 0249 are non-constants (Class V) in N-A 2 6 . They are all
listed by H-G but not used in its apparatus.

UBSIMC
U B S 1 2 lists 170 uncials (including D a b s *). The highest numbered
uncial here is 0250. UBS 3 added nine further uncials, seven of
which were taken from M C . The seven are 027 035 045 075 0150
0151 0211 and these do not occur in the apparatus to UBS 3 . (060
and 0175 used by M C had appeared in the lists in UBS 1 " 2 but were
not used in a UBS edition). The sundry 0192 (now identified as /
1604) found in M C p. 119 needs to be added to M C and UBS 3 .
0150 and 0151 are used by M C in the discussion on p. 661 about
the position of Hebrews in the canon and do not appear in an ap-
paratus. 0150 0151 and 0211 are unique to M C . The other two
mss. added are 091 and 014 (the Modena Acts). 091 is used by
Syn 10 , H-G and N-A 2 6 (where it is class I), and also listed by Bover-
O ' C . and Souter. 014 appears in N-A 2 6 and is listed by Souter and
Bover-O'C.
0137 is not listed by UBS although 0136 to which 0137 belongs
according to the Liste is used. 0139 is not listed although 029 of
which it is now said to be a part is used. Likewise 0178 is not listed
but 070 is. 0244 is not listed but 0186 is.
Uncials listed by UBS 3 but which seem not to be used in an ap-
paratus are 0126 0156 0170 0182 0186 0223 0238. These are small
fragments.
Uncials absent from the discussion in UBS and M C but included
in the lists in N-A 2 6 and Syn 10 are the following: 069 080 089 092a
094 0107 0104 0114 0118 0127 0133 0135 0137 0147 0160 0161 0164
0167 0178 0184 0188 0200 0203 0204 0212 0215. Of these 080 092a
0164 0200 0215 are not found in the apparatus either to N-A 2 6 or
Syn 10 . 0118 0167 and 0184 are not used in the apparatus to Syn 10 .
O n e assumes the mss. were made available to the Mnster Institut
after UBS 3 was completed. 069 089 0118 0160 0178 0184 and 0188
108 J. . ELLIOTT

are found also in Bover-O'C's list. 0163 is in N-A 2 6 and Souter

which shows the ms. was known earlier than the time U B S 3 and
Syn 1 0 were prepared.
U B S 3 reached only 0250. The following mss. above that number
are included in the lists in N-A 2 6 and Syn 1 0 : 0253 0255 0256 0260
0263 0264 0265 0266 0267 0268 0269. 0271 0272 0273 0274 are in
N-A 2 6 and Greek-English Syn 3 . 0256 is not used in the apparatus to
N-A 2 6 . 0263 0264 and 0268 are not found in the apparatus either of
N-A 2 6 .or Syn 1 0 . 0260 0269 are absent from the apparatus to Syn 1 0 .

Syn10

T h e number of uncials listed by Syn 1 0 is 167. (The third edition

of the Greek-English Synopsis increases the number to 171 and in
cludes 0271 0272 0273 and 0274.) 15 of the uncial manuscripts
listed seem not to appear in an apparatus. If this figure is correct the
apparatus uses 91 % of the uncials listed. These fifteen are 080 092a
(089 of which 092a is a part is listed and used) 0118 0164 0167 0184
0200 0215 (059 of which 0215 is part is listed and used) 0216 0238
0260 0263 0264 0268 and 0269. These are small fragments.
No uncial is used only in Syn 1 0 . 0153 is a sundry ms. found only
in the apparatus (four times in sections 331 and 332Luke 22:52,
61, 64, 68). This ms. is cited as Ostraca 1-20 by von Dobschtz. 13
Another sundry is 0249 found in the apparatus to Syn 10 at Matt.
25:4, 7, 9 (this uncial is used as a Class I ms. in N-A 2 6 and is listed
but not used by H-G). With these two sundries the total number of
uncials found in the apparatus to Syn 10 is 154.
The lost uncial 072 is used by N-A 2 6 (as Class I) but not by H-G.
0233 is used by N-A 2 6 but not by H-G. (Syn 10 does not list either of
these mss.)

H-G'3

H-G lists 166 uncials (including D a b s l). Three uncials are uni-
que: 055 0144 0154. The latter two are lost. Gospel uncials not
found in H - G ' s list are 016 (used by N-A 2 6 , UBS, Syn 10 and listed
by Souter and B o v e r - O ' C ) , 0193 (used by N-A 2 6 , UBS, Syn 1 0 ),
0238 (used by N-A 2 6 , listed but not found in the apparatus to UBS
and Syn 1 0 ), 0256 (used by Syn 10 , listed but not found in the

N-A 2 6 and Syn), 0267 (in N-A 2 6 and Syn 10 ), 0268 (listed but not
found in apparatus to N-A 2 6 and Syn 10 ), 0127 (used by N-A 2 6 and
Syn 10 ), 0168 and 0248 (not used by any edition in this survey), 0271
0272 and 0273 (used by N-A 2 6 and Greek-English Syn 3 ). 072 and
0233, listed by H-G, occur elsewhere only in N-A 2 6 : 0249 is in
N-A 2 6 and Syn 10 (apparatus not list) only. 14
The following uncials occur in the apparatus but are not listed in
the introduction: the ostraca 0153 (at Mark 5:40; 9:22; Luke 22:45,
50 bis); 0267 (Luke 8:26).
Forty-four uncials are listed but are not apparently used in the
apparatus. These are: 058 060 064 069 072 080 0100 0101 0105
0110 0114 0118 0125 0126 0132 0134 0143 0144 0145 0146 0147

0231 0233 0234 0235 0239 0249 0253 0255 0263 0265 0269.

Souter
The highest numbered uncial listed is 0170. The total number of
uncials listed is 76 (including 010 bracketed). No check has been
undertaken of Souter's apparatus to see how many of these mss.
actually appear there. No uncial is listed uniquely in Souter and all
appear in N-A 2 6 and UBS 3 except 0163 used by N-A 2 6 not UBS
(027 035 045 are listed in UBS 3 but appear only in M C ) .

Bover-0 'Callaghan
This edition lists 121 uncials, the highest numbered uncial is
0208. 057 listed by Bovej-O'C. is found elsewhere only in N-A 2 6
but is not made use of in its apparatus. 056 listed by Bover-O'C. is
found elsewhere only in UBS. 0169 is found elsewhere only in
N-A 2 6 as a Class I ms. A check has not been undertaken on the ap-
paratus to Bover-O'C.

following are not used in the work of the Project because they are il
legible or inaccessible: 055 (in H-G) 0155 (in UBS, Syn 1 0 , [H-G]

078 (in N-A 2 6 , UBS, H-G, Syn 1 0 and listed in B o v e r - O ' C ) . The
last two are Class I in N-A 2 6 . 0133 is not used in the Project: accor
ding to the contents of this ms. in N-A 2 6 and Syn 1 0 it does not con
tain Luke, but according to the Liste Luke is included. 0133 is used
in N-A 2 6 as a constant (Class I) and is in Syn 1 0 and H-G. Brackets
around an edition indicate the ms. seems not to be used in its
apparatus.

CURSIVES

N-A26

823 cursives are listed in Appendix 1A, 622 of these occur under
the heading M.16 5 cursives occur both in the main list (pp.
702-710) and as part of Af: these are 2ap 110 309 491 and 1906. The
duplication is nowhere explained. All except 491 appear in the ap
paratus in their own right as category V mss. Fifteen cursives are
designated as category III(*); seventeen as category I I [ * ] . 1 7 There
are no category I cursives i.e. constants marked*. Of the one hun
dred and seventyfour cursives in the main list, nineteen are singled
out on pp. 50*-53* for special mention. These I have designated
category IV (see below).
There are many mss. in N-A 2 6 that have not appeared in any
other printed edition, the majority are subsumed under the symbol
Af on p . 711. In fact 366 of the 622 cursives in M are unique to

N-A , 12 are found elsewhere only in Bover-O'C.'s list (639 655

Eight of these are category IV as well (see below).
T H E CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 111

T h e unique cursives that are not M are as follows: [117] [189]

621 720 1067 [1329] 1506 [1729] [1735] 1832 [2027] 2377. Square
brackets indicate that the ms. seems not to be used in the apparatus
26
to N-A . All the mss. are category V except 1506 which is II for the
26
Pauline epistles. 2016 is found only in N-A and in Bover-O'C.
26
1325 is found in N-A and in the apparatus (but not the list of
10
mss.) in Syn .
Seventeen cursives occur in the list with an asterisk in square
brackets to denote that they are used as constants in certain,
designated, parts of the New Testament. The fourth column of the
list in the Appendix identifies by means of a bracketed asterisk the
relevant part(s) of the New Testament so treated. We may divide
these mss., referred to in my review of N-A 2 6 as Class II mss., into
two lists, one containing nine cursives which are only Class II
( = (a) below), the other containing eight cursives which are also
identified on pp. 51*-53* as worthy of special mention elsewhere in
the New Testament (i.e. my category IV mss) ( = (b) below). The
two lists are as follows:-

19
According to p. 53*. p. 708 seems to be correct. Normally mss. are only
category IV if they are ' 'important" elsewhere (cf. p. 50*).
112 J. . ELLIOTT

Of the eight cursives in list (b) 945 is not actually cited in the
apparatus to e, 1505 is not found in e a p, 1881 is not cited in a.
The introduction to N-A is confusing. Category II ms. are,
according to p. 70*, constants in the same way as category I mss.
(i.e. those identified in the Appendix with an unbracketed asterisk)
except that they are constant only for part of the New Testament.
Thus they differ from those mss. marked with an asterisk within
rounded brackets in column one of Appendix I A (i.e. category III).
The latter group are said on p. 70* to be cited only when they differ
from M. However pp. 50* 52* and 53* list mss. which differ from
M. One would expect these mss. to be those designated as category
III in the Appendix, but in fact the following category II cursives
occur as well:-p. 50* (gospels) 1424; p. 50* (Acts) 323 614 945 1175
2495; p. 52* (Pauline epistles) 104 365 630 1506 1881 2465 and,
again, 1175 2495; p . 53* (catholic epistles) 323 614 630 2495; p. 53*
(Revelation) 1006 1611 1841 1854. [A special note on p. 53* con
cerns 2344 2377 which are category II as far as it is practicable in
Revelation but because of the special character of these mss. they
are treated as category IV in the statistical tables at the end of this
article.] The introductory words on p. 53* prefacing the list of mss.
used in Revelation differ from the words introducing the lists for the
other sections of the New Testament, p. 53* (Revelation) speaks of
and lists the constants (although in practice the list includes 2030
2050 2053 2062 2329 2351 listed as category III in the Appendix)
whereas the introductory words for e a c on pp. 50* 52* 53* speak
of and list those mss. differing from M (i.e. category III) although
as we have seen some category II mss. are included. With the un
cials there seems less confusion, e.g. (025) is, according to Appen
dix IA column 4 category II for c, category III for and category V
for a; on pp. 50*ff. 0.25 is ignored for a as one would expect, but it
is listed under the correct heading for and for c, although for r the
heading on p. 53* would have led us to expect an unbracketed
20
asterisk before r on p. 692.
20
That a difference is intended in (025) in column four of Appendix IA be
tween those parts of the New Testament preceded by an asterisk in round brackets
and the unbracketed asterisk preceding c does not explain our dilemma with the
cursives where all category II mss. have a bracketed asterisk in column four. The
rounded bracket there would agree with the wording of pp. 50*-53* but would
make these mss. only category III throughout. Nor can it be deduced that the
unasterisked parts of the New Testament in column four are the parts treated as
category II status. 1881 for example is extant only for a c : is supposedly
category II and a c IV.
THE CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 113

15 cursives appear in the list with an asterisk in rounded brackets

Manuscripts isolated on pp. 51*-53* for special mention have
been designated in my review of this text as category IV mss. There
are twenty-seven cursives in this category of which eight also occur
as Class II cursives in another part of the New Testament. Those
eight manuscripts have already been listed above. The others are as

It is interesting to note that 1241, extant for e a c, is used in c (e.g. Rom.
11:16, I Cor. 6:19, I Jn. 2:12) even though these portions are by a different hand
from e a.
22
Although p. 51* says 1884 is ''cited on occasion" this ms. is cited only in the
inscriptio to Acts (p. 320). 1884 is mentioned three times in MC from which it would
be perfectly in orderinsofar as the information is reliablefor N-A26 to have in
serted 1884 between 1739s and 2495 (p. 321 apparatus line 2). It is among the pc
(N-A26 p. 332 line 3) and could again be inserted between 1739 and 2495 (p. 400
line 4). (See MC pp. 282, 326, 495).

singled out in the introduction as being of special importance. They

are 189 322 424 453 623 1243 1704 1846 2298. In the case of 322
424 623 1243 1704 1846 2298 pp. 52*-53* implies these mss. are
category IV because inter alia " t h e y are cited elsewhere" but they
seem not to be so used!
It is interesting now to examine how all these category IV mss.
are used and how, if at all, they are cited outside the areas where
they are so identified. In the case of the hybrid category
IV/category II mss. they are not cited in those parts of the N T
where they are extant yet in neither category. The following com
mentary on the above list should clarify the position:
6: Not found in e. Frequent in a and (particularly) p. Three occur
rences only in c (Jas. 1:12; 5:14; J u d e 12).
36: Frequent in a, once only in c (Jas. 4:9).
69: T h e only category IV ms. to be cited in all five sections. Cited
frequently only in c.
189ap: Not found in apparatus to pc and only found twice in a (Acts

322: Not found in ap. Frequent in c.

The above survey allows us to note that category IV mss. are
cited for that portion of the New Testament where they are singled
out on pp. 51*-53* for special mention. Where they are extant out
side these portions they are not usually cited at all. (69 is an excep
tion in this regard.) Usually frequent citation occurs in the special
T H E CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 115

portion of the New Testament although in some cases (e.g. 189 a,

424 a p, 1704 a and 1846 c) citation is infrequent.
If we bring into our survey the eight mss. discussed earlier 2 3 we
may now provide a commentary on these:
104: Cited once in c (II Peter 2:20), once in r (Rev. 13:10), more
frequent in (where it is category II) than a (IV).
323: Frequently cited in a (II) and (IV) but arguably more fre
quent in c (also IV).
614: As frequent in c (II) as 323 was in c. More frequent in a (II)
than (IV).
630: Very frequent in (II). Frequent in c (II) but only once in a
(IV) (Acts 23:20).
945: Cited regularly in all three portions, a () and c (both IV).
1505: See fn. 18 and 19. It is not clear if this ms. is II or IV in c.
Frequent citation.
1881: Very frequent citation in (II), where it is one of the most
cited mss. It is frequently cited in c (IV).
2464: Very frequent in (II). Fairly frequent in a and c (IV).
The difference between the citation in those portions known here
as category IV and those called category II is (with the exception of
630) difficult to determine. Some category IV mss. seem to be cited
just as regularly as the so-called constant category II mss. (pace
p. 50*).
Forty-two cursives in the main list in Appendix IA seem never to
occur in an apparatus. If any reader locates their use I would be
grateful to be informed so that the tables in the appendix to this
article can be adjusted. P. 70* tells us that Appendix I gives a list of
the mss. used in the edition. If there is a distinction to be drawn be
tween those mss. used and cited and those used but not cited this is
not clear. The following mss. appear to be neglected in the ap
paratus thus calling into question their inclusion in Appendix IA:

( B o v e r - O ' C , H-G, I G N T P ) . All are found in Souter's list.
The following mss. from the above list are used by UBS 3 or M C :
51 1831 1845 1875 2014 2143. All except 1875 occur in
Bover-O'C.'s list. 51 and 1831 are sundries in H-G. The following
occurs only in U B S 3 : 636. 209 r occurs in U B S 3 and in M C but is
not included, as it should have been, in the appendix to M C The
following occur in U B S 1 ' 2 ' 3 : 4ap 76 451 (Class I), 4 9 1 2 6 1758 2067
2148 (Class I). 491 1758 2067 occur in Bover-O'C.'s list. 429 r oc
curs in the lists of UBS but is not found in the apparatus (see below
under UBS). The following are in UBS and Syn.: 162 998 1012.
B o v e r - O ' C lists 998 1012. The following occurs in UBSVMC:
385. (This is listed by Bover-O'C. and Souter). 94ap is listed by
UBS but not used in the apparatus either to UBS or M C (Souter
and Bover-O'C. list it). 42 and 225 occur in UBS and are listed by
B o v e r - O ' C and Souter; 174 230 are used by UBS, I G N T P and
H-G. and are listed by Souter and Bover-O'C. 1448 occurs
elsewhere only as part of in Syn. 1194 is used by UBS/MC, Syn.
and H-G. and is listed by Bover-O'C.
The following cursives are found in the apparatus to this edition,
but are not listed in the Appendix: 610 (cited at J a s . 1.27) and 2060
(cited at Rev. 18:2). These mss. are used by M C (and consequently
listed in the appendix to M C and in UBS 3 ) and listed by
Bover-O'C. They are treated as sundries in the appendix to this
article. If any other such sundries are found in the apparatus I
would be grateful to be informed.
Cursives described as i o s t ' in Aland's Liste which have been used
in N-A 2 6 include 2ap (used at I Thess. 2:8) 238 241 255 257 1518
and 2554 (used as M). 238 241 257 and 1518 are also used by UBS,
Syn 1 0 and listed by Souter and Bover-O'C. 255 is used by UBS and
is listed by Souter. 238 241 occur as sundries in H-G.
Cursives absent from N-A 2 6 are sometimes found in other edi
tions in this survey. As far as other editions associated with
Mnster are concerned the following statistics are significant:

The significant number of new cursives introduced in M C and
/or UBS which have subsequently been abandoned in N-A 2 6 shows
not only the different nature of the apparatus in these editions but
also the idiosyncrasies of the compilers of the apparatus.
According to N-A 2 6 Appendix IA and p . 50* family 1 comprises
leap 118 131 209 1582. All these occur in UBS, Syn, H-G, Souter
and I G N T P . Family 13 is said to include 13 69 124 174 230 346 543
788 826 828 983 1689 1709. 1689 and 1709 occur not only on p. 50*
and p . 711 but also on the blue card inset; yet neither occurs in the
main list of cursives in Appendix IA. The lost ms. 1689 is listed in
UBS 1 ' 2 and UBS 3 but seems not to be cited in these editions
although M C uses it. Syn 3 uses it, so too does H-G 1 3 (Souter and
Bover-O'C. list it). 1709 is listed elsewhere only by Souter. It is not
obvious why 1689 and 1709 are treated differently in N-A 2 6 from
124 174 230 346 543 788 826 828 983 1582 insofar as these although
listed in Appendix IA do not occur in the apparatus, except as part
of the family group.
69 is category IV in the catholic epistles in N-A 2 6 . 13 itself also
occurs in the apparatus to the gospels in its own right. 69 124 174
346 543 788 828 983 occur in UBS, Syn, Souter, B o v e r - O ' C , H-G
and I G N T P . 230 826 occur elsewhere in UBS, Souter, Bover-O'C.
and I G N T P , but not Syn 10 . 13 occurs in UBS (as class I), Syn 10 ,
Souter, B o v e r - O ' C , H-G and I G N T P .

class I for r, II for a c p : 181 is I for a c p, II for r. In making these
calculations 429 is taken to be two mss. (as set out in U B S 1 2 ) 2 9 and
so too are 180 and 209.
T h e majority of extra cursives represents those originally includ
ed in the Appendix to the first edition of M C . Two hundred and fif
ty mss. were added to U B S 3 for this reason (none of these was in
U B S 2 except 2386). There are in addition ten cursives in U B S 3
which are neither in U B S 2 nor in the Appendix to M C : 209r 365
636 911 914 918 1333 1907 2318 2768. Thus U B S 3 has 259 more
cursives listed than U B S 2 . In point of fact 209r is used by M C , so
too are 365, 1907; see under M C for details. 2318 and 2768 are not
used in the apparatus to U B S 3 ; 636 and 918 seem only to have been
used in the expanded apparatus at the C o m m a J o h a n n e u m .
Forty-one cursives listed in U B S 3 seem not to have been used in
the apparatus; 8* 31 37 39* 53 55* 75* 80 94ap 98* 111* 134* 137

we ought to add the 190 cursives listed in U B S 3 but used in M C not
UBS3.
Lost mss. used by U B S 3 include 1522 1873 2193.

MC

The first printing of Metzger's Commentary included an appendix

listing those mss. apparently used in the discussions but absent
from U B S 2 . Two hundred and fifty eight cursives were added to the
lists in U B S 2 (taking 180e and 180apr as separate mss.) although
2386 was added needlessly as it is in the list in U B S 2 . Of these, only
3
250 are repeated in the secondary list in U B S . The expanding of
3 2
the list in U B S when compared with U B S seems to have been in
tended to include those mss. originally listed in M C ' s appendix: in
deed printings of M C later than the appearance of U B S 3 deleted the
appendix. The missing eight are 23 598 807 1341 1884 1932 2321

and not as part of a discussion proper. Nevertheless the reason for
their absence from UBS 3 is unclear. Some of these mss. are used in
other editions: N-A 2 6 , prepared in Mnster later than UBS 3 , used
1884 (and 1932 as part of M)\ Souter lists 2322 (used by IGNTP)
and also 2321; 598 appears in Bover-O'C's list; Syn 10 and N-A 26
use 1341 (N-A 26 has it as part of Ai).
In fact more than 258 extra cursives have been used in the discus-
sion in M C . There are thirteen sundries, which ought to have ap-
peared in the Appendix to MC and in UBS 3 . These are:
7e cited at John 17:7 (p. 249)
36e cited at Matt. 20:16 (p. 51)
209r at Rev. 16:16 (p. 757)
314 (cited by its Tischendorf number 23) at I Peter 1:7 (p.
687)
365 at I Tim. 3:16 (p. 641) and Heb. 9:19 (p. 669)
612 (cited by its Tischendorf number 134) at Acts 1:14 (p.
284)
643 at I John 2:7 (p. 710)
909 (cited by its Tischendorf number 225) at Acts 10:9 (p.
370)
1905 at Heb. 7:13 (p. 667)
1907 at I Thess. 5:27 (p. 634)
1915 at Rom. 1:7 (p. 505)
2040 31 at Rev. 14:3 (p. 752) and also in pp. 753, 755, 756, 760,
762, 764.
2043 at Rev. 14:20 (p. 755)
Of the above, four are found only in MC and in no other edition
in this survey (36e, 612, 643, 909); 7e is listed by Souter,
Bover-O'C. and is listed but not used in either Syn 10 or H-G; 209r
is listed but not used in N-A 2 6 , and is listed by Souter and
Bover-O'C; 314 is in N-A 26 as part of , and is also listed by
Souter and Bover-O'C; 365 is used by N-A. 26 ; 1905 and 1915 are
in N-A 2 6 as part M\ 1907 is listed as part of M by N-A 2 6 is also used
in U B S 3 ; 2040 appears in the lists in Bover-O'C. and Souter
(renumbered 911 this ms. is used by U B S 3 and is part of M in
N-A 2 6 ); 2043 is known elsewhere only in Bover-O'C

but were not used in the apparatus to that edition. These mss. also
appear in the list in U B S 3 and although they are not used in the ap

2074 2193. These mss. should not have appeared in U B S 2 but could
have been added to the list in the Appendix to M C (cf. 2386).
The following twenty-three mss. do appear in the appendix to
M C but have not been located in the discussions: 8 39 55 75 98 111

these we need to add 23 598 807 1341 2321 2322, which are neither
listed by U B S 3 nor found to be correctly used in the discussion in
MC
Lost mss. (according to the Liste) used by M C include 339 2039

O n e hundred and thirty six 3 2 cursives occur in the main list of

which ten seem not to be made use of in the apparatus (2e 7e 29 38
47 138 597 899 1346 2386). Seven cursives appear in the apparatus
but are not included in the introductory list. These sundries are 2ap
(I Cor. 11:23 p. 437), 58 (John 6:22 p. 211), 175 (Matt. 21:19 p .

(Mark 6:35 p . 206), 1325 (Mark 4:28 p . 206).
The following cursives appear both in the main list and as part of
K: 272 399 945 998 1229 1604. No explanation is offered why this
should be so. 1604 does not seem to be used in the apparatus. In
10
cluding these mss. there are 175 mss. making up K. Only Syn
3 26
gives this list: Greek-English Syn refers us to N-A for a definition
of K, although of course N-A 2 6 does not use K, nor can the gospel
mss. in M be determined from the Appendix to N-A 2 6 ! unlike M
includes eight uncials.
Some mss. are included in but are absent from M. These are

Of these the following mss. occur only in Acts (322 614 1739) and are not to
be found in Greek-English Syn3.

This ms. is listed but not used by UBS! It is a sundry in H-G.

and do not appear in the lists of any other editions used in the
survey.
Two hundred and thirty nine gospel mss. included under M in
N-A 2 6 are not in Syn as if34, but five gospel cursives included in M
are upgraded in Syn 1 0 and occur in its main list: 57 108 476 1547
and 1604 (the latter is in both the main list and under K). The
ms. 2147 in Syn 1 0 has been upgraded in N-A 2 6 where it appears as a
grade V ms.
The lost ms. 487 is used by Syn 1 0 . So too are the cursives 253 (us
ed by UBS and listed by Souter), 659 (also used by M C , H-G and
listed by Bover-O'C), 1689 (also used by MC and H-G, listed but
not used by U B S 1 ' 2 , listed by Souter and Bover-O'C). Of the ten
cursives listed by Syn 1 0 but not used in the apparatus 2e is listed by
Souter, 7e used by H-G and listed by Souter and Bover-O'C, 899
is listed by Bover-O'C, 29 is found in MC and is listed by Souter,
38 is in UBS, and is listed by Souter and Bover-O'C, 47 is in M C ,
138 is in UBS and is listed by Bover-O'C, 1346 is in N-A and is
listed by Bover-O'C (and is in the lists of U B S 3 and M C although
it seems to be cited by neither), 2386 is in N-A (as part of M) and
MC (it is listed by U B S 2 but apparently not used in its apparatus).
(597 is a sundry in H-G, so too are 29, 38, 47, 138, 1346).
There are 129 cursives common to N-A 2 6 and Syn 1 0 that do not
occur in UBS, or 130 if one includes cursive 1325 which is used in
Syn 1 0 apparatus but is not in its list. This represents a large number
of gospel mss. made use of since U B S 3 was published. One hundred
and twenty four of these are M in N-A 2 6 and in Syn 1 0 : this
includes 272 which appears also on the main list in Syn. 3 5 Of the
remaining five 430 1038 and 1229 occur as ordinary mss. in both
N-A 2 6 and Syn 1 0 , although 1229, like 272, occurs in both lists in
Syn 1 0 . 1547 occurs as part of M in N-A, but is in the main list in
Syn 1 0 . By contrast 1448 occurs in the main list of N-A 2 6 (although
seems not to be cited in the apparatus) and as in Syn 1 0 .
The following cursives occur only in Syn 1 0 and UBS, that is they
are absent from the later N-A 2 6 : 138* (listed but not used in the ap
paratus of Syn 1 0 ) 185* 273* 291* 397 495 927* (as in Syn 1 0 )

34
Only 27 of the cursives in M not are used in other editions (including
IGNTP): the rest are peculiar to M.
35
1350a and 1350b are both gospel mss. Both occur as M in N-A26. Syn 10 p.

indicate that the ms. seems not to be used in the apparatus. 7e is us-

these mss. are however found in the lists of Souter (2e 7e 115 126

by Syn 10 at Mark 4:28 but not in its introductory lists). Of these,
the first four in the list are known to Souter; Bover-O'C. lists 229
251 473 1038 ( I G N T P uses 229); 64 229 251 473 1038 are sundries
in H-G.
Four hundred and eight 38 gospel mss. used in other editions in
this survey are absent from Syn 10 . Sixteen of these had been listed
by Souter (and one by Souter, H-G and Bover-O'C. only), thirty
are found in I G N T P (two in I G N T P , H-G and B o v e r - O ' C ) . Half
of the 400 + gospel mss. absent from Syn 10 appear in N-A 2 6 but as
part of M. There are only three in the main list: 117 listed in N-A 2 6
alone among the editions in this survey is not in fact found in the
apparatus; 189 is in the same position but the unique 720 is used in
the apparatus. There are in addition about thirty gospel mss.
absent from Syn 10 that are found in UBS, N-A 26 and, sometimes,
Souter, I G N T P and Bover-O'C. (in varying combinations). H-G
uses 36 unique gospel mss.; 35 of these are sundries.

138 273 291 301 397 495 1047 1170 1396 1574 are sundries in H-G.
38 235 249 253 299 372 are sundries in H-G.
38
As 58 175 301 569 1325 are used in the apparatus to Syn10 but are not in the
list the total is 403. One could also include the non-gospel cursive 257 found in
Syn10.
T H E CITATION OF MSS IN NEW EDITIONS 123

H-G13
Sixty one cursives appear in the list on p. xvii but only sixty on
pp. xxx-xxxi (cursive 174 is absent there). In the list only 160 is us-
ed uniquely in this edition. 39 27 and 827 occur elsewhere only in
B o v e r - O ' C ; 115 only in B o v e r - O ' C , I G N T P , Souter and Syn;
1278 only in B o v e r - O ' C and Souter; 872 1391 1606 only in Bover-
O ' C . and 2191 only in N-A 2 6 as M. 2191 is in fact the only listed
cursive which seems not to be used in H-G apparatus.
226 cursives occur in the apparatus but are not listed. Although
cited correctly some are non-gospel mss. and in the apparatus occur
for v. II in other portions of the N T in the text. As it is impossible to
ascertain this information without scouring the apparatus these
details follow. The figure in brackets following the ms. number
represents the total number of times the ms. is cited in the
apparatus. In many cases (e.g. 472, 1093) these sundries appear
more frequently than certain of the listed mss.

Souter

Of the older testaments Souter lists the greatest number of cur

sives. The apparatus to this edition has not been checked to see if all
the mss. listed appear there. H e lists 243 cursives the highest
numbered being 2322. Of these 23 do not appear in the lists of other
editions used in this survey 4 0 (11 19 26 32 40 49 50 70 86 93 121 220
271 389 421 559 1485 1709 1719 1909 1913 2021 2034). Some are
found elsewhere only in B o v e r - O ' C (91 1894 2026 2305 2041 and
2040 (now part of 911 and cited under that number by N-A 2 6 as
part of M, and by UBS 3 ). 1278 is cited elsewhere only by
Bover-O'C. and H-G. 66 and 1510 are used elsewhere only in IG
N T P . There are six cursives in N-A 2 6 (as M) and Souter only (141
452 498 625 1069 1734). 250 314 452 are in Souter, N-A 2 6 (as M)
and Bover-O'C. only. 2016 is in Souter, N-A 2 6 , Bover-O'C. only.

Bover-0 'Callaghan

Three hundred and sixty cursives occur in the introductory lists.

The apparatus to this edition has not been examined to check if all
in fact appear in the apparatus. O n e ms., 206a, a cursive of Revela
tion, is unknown in the Liste. (Only 206 a p e , which is separately
listed by Bover-O'C appears there). The following mss. occur only
in Bover-O'C. and are not listed in the other editions included in
this survey (e following the ms. number indicates that the ms. con
tains the gospels): 280e 406e 423e 430e 479e 613 849e 869e 986e

We note particularly that of these uniquely listed mss. 613 and 2093
are described in the Liste as having been destroyed and 1525 as lost.
872e 1391e 1606e are known only to Bover-O'C. and H-G. From
the above the following are sundries in H-G: 280 406 1515 1588.

Unused cursives
Almost 3000 cursives have been catalogued of which at least half are
not used in any edition in this survey. There are obvious reasons
why some numbers do not appear, e.g. (a) some have been
renumbered as lectionaries (1866 2151 2210); (b) some are now
identified as belonging to another numbered cursive (2149-2158,
2161-2170); (c) some numbers are unassigned (1825 2171); (d)
some have not been studied (2442-2463); (e) some are illegible
(2208 2385); (f) some are lost (2299-2301) or privately owned (677
2438) and others have been burned, lost, mislaid or are otherwise
41
158 is a sundry in H-G. So too is 475.
42
It is not clear if 1542a or 1542b is found in Bover-O'C. H-G intends 1542 to
be 1542b. Both mss. occur in IGNTP.

unavailable since they were catalogued (252 332 338 341 342 433

mss. (599 882 885 2087 2094 2110 2228). Discounting mss. of this
type there are still over 1500 proper cursives whose location is
known and which are legible but which have not yet been made use

of as we enter " t h e age of the minuscules'\

LECTIONARIES

The use made of lectionary texts in printed editions of the Greek

New Testament is very small. UBS makes most use of lectionaries
listing 149, 109 of which occur in the apparatus of UBS, and 24 in
both UBS and in M C . Fifty two are listed as having been collated
especially for this edition. These are said to have been cited
systematically although only 51 of these are found in the ap
p a r a t u s I have been unable to locate / 1610. Of the remaining 97
lectionaries that are cited from previous editions of the Greek New
Testament and consequently only sporadically used, the following
seem not to occur in the apparatus: / 1 / 164 / 230 / 241 / 276 / 331
/ 574 / 952 / 961 / 983 / 1014 / 1291 / 1300 / 1311 / 1635. (/ 961 is
listed by Bover-O'C.)
N-A 2 6 lists only five lectionaries: / 32 / 44 /185 /1575 /1602. / 44
occurs in the apparatus at R o m . 2:12 albeit printed in the wrong
type face. / 1602 occurs in the brevior lectio at the end of Mark. The
remaining three lectionaries seem not to appear in the apparatus.
(/ 32 occurs in I G N T P . )
Syn 1 0 lists six lectionaries: / 47 / 118 / 181 / 182 / 183 / 185. / 47
/182 and / 183 occur in an apparatus (/183 is also used by UBS) so
does / 185 (cf. N-A 2 6 above). The remaining two seem not to be
cited. In addition /1602 is a sundry in that it is used on p. 508 as in
N-A 2 6 at the conclusion to Mark. It is not listed. I G N T P restricts its
citation of lectionaries to a consortium of ten 4 6 manuscripts that
represent the dominant text plus 3 1 4 7 lectionaries exhibiting a
divergent text. These 31 are cited individually.
H-G lists / 547 / 963 ( = part of 0100) and / 965 ( - partof0114).
T h e latter two are mss. of J o h n . / 547 is used in the apparatus. In

addition the apparatus cites 143 other lectionaries. 48 This means

that the total number of gospel lectionaries used by H-G is equal to
the number listed in the introduction to UBS 3 (which includes
gospel and non-gospel lectionaries of course)!
Bover lists 30 lectionaries (including / 1596 = / 1043).
Souter ignores lectionaries.

Liber Comicus is mis-spelt on p. 715 (the ms. has one "m"; the
book by J. Perez de Urbel et al. two). Uncials DE are inverted in the

uses / 883; U B S 3 /1761). H-G also cites both / 883 and /1761 in the
apparatus.
Other apparent errors especially in the misplaced use of ms. sym
bols can be solved by reading the symbols as belonging to Tischen
d o r f s system of classification. A conversion table occurs below.

The same error occurs in Greek-English Syn 3 .

The following sundries occur in the apparatus and are not ap
parently gospel mss:

This error is repeated in the apparatus in UBS and is the only instance where
an erratum in MC is matched by one in UBS 3 ad loc.

As the context makes clear (and B* 75) at Acts 13:18 (p. 405) refer to LXX
mss. (cf. Q p . 428 bis). at Acts 7:36 (p. 350) could be a misprint for (014).

Tischendorf Numbers

Occasionally Metzger in the additional ms. attestation given in

his Commentary uses the Tischendorf numeration rather than the
conventional Gregory numbers, without warning and often in
terspersed with the Gregory numbers. The following conversion
table may be useful to readers to avoid confusion when consulting
M C . In the statistics used in this article the Gregory numbers have
been taken into account for those mss. which do not occur with their
Gregory number elsewhere. This applies to the mss. asterisked
below:
