Performance

Assessment Task 13 Design Brief

Perform a chemical reaction to a Lower School Science Class

Theme: Description and Presentation of Chemical Reaction

The final product for this Assessment Tasks 11, 12 and 13 is to perform a chemical reaction to a
class. You will describe the reaction and explain how it works, using chemical equations and the
Collision Theory.

RESEARCH / DOCUMENTATION A digital Infographic that can be displayed on a screen as you

perform the reaction. This Infographic should describe and explain the reaction in terms of
changes to the materials (atoms) and changes to the energy input and energy output.
MATERIALS: Laptop with PowerPoint, or other software to display your infographic.

reaction-demonstrations.html

PROCESSES: Keep all of your apparatus ready in a tray. Return chemicals to the Laboratory
Preparation Area at the close of each practical session. Demonstrate the reaction to the
class. If time permits we can demonstrate and inspire some Year 8 classes as well.

CRITERIA: Criteria for the Reaction Demonstration

PART A: Backdrop Presentation
1. Produce a PowerPoint slide or two of an Infographic describing the safety of the reaction,
the reactant chemicals, the product chemicals, the energy involved and what is happening
during the reaction.
2. Describe where this reaction is applied in real life.
PART B: Performance of the Demonstration
1. Keep all apparatus and chemicals in a tray
2. Describe what is happening during the reaction.

TIMELINE: Performance time to be negotiated. PowerPoint due Wednesday 7 September

PRESENTATION:
Demonstration of the reaction with a verbal description and explanation of the reaction. Include a
Backdrop Presentation.
Act as critical analyst for other student demonstrations.

Science Inquiry Skills

construct questions for investigation; propose hypotheses; and predict possible outcomes

plan, select and use appropriate investigation methods, to collect reliable data; assess risk and address ethical
issues associated with these methods
conduct investigations safely, competently and methodically for the collection of valid and reliable data
represent data in meaningful and useful ways; organise and analyse data to identify trends and patterns;
qualitatively describe sources of measurement error and use evidence to make and justify conclusions

interpret a range of scientific and media texts, and evaluate the conclusions by considering the quality of
available evidence
use appropriate representations, to communicate conceptual understanding, solve problems and make
predictions

communicate scientific ideas and information for a particular purpose, using appropriate scientific language,
conventions and representations

Science as a Human Endeavour

the use of scientific knowledge is influenced by social, economic, cultural and ethical considerations

the use of scientific knowledge may have beneficial and/or harmful and/or unintended consequences
scientific knowledge can enable scientists to offer valid explanations and make reliable predictions

Science Understanding
Atomic structure
the properties of elements, compounds and mixtures determine the use of substances
Chemical reactions
rearrangement of matter occurs during chemical reactions to form new substances
chemical reactions involve energy; different types of reactions are used to produce a variety of products
