Viper Island: Viper Island is situated at a sea distance of 2 kms each from Haddo Jetty and Junglighat
Jetty. It is a separate Island. There is no road transport to the island and inside the island. Beautiful
coconut plantations in the island attract tourists. Viper Island has a marvellous scenic beauty. Some say
that this island is named after a snake called viper, with two heads, found in plenty in this Island. Others
hold that it is the name of a particular language. But, actually, the island is named as Viper Island in
memory of the vessel called T S S Viper in which Lt.

Archibald Blair came to these Islands in 1876 for the establishment of a penal settlement. The vessel
Viper met with an accident and was wrecked near these islands. That's why the Island is called Viper
Island. As a result of the accident, the British people had chosen this island to keep all the prisoners
under penal settlement before the construction of Cellular Jail.

After the construction of the Cellular Jail, the women prisoners were kept in the Viper Island. The Viper
Island Jail had gallows on the top of a hillock. Here in this jail, the condemned women prisoners were
hanged. Though the signs of penal settlement are completely obliterated, the Jail and its gallows are
retained as a Courist spot.

Mount Harriet: It is situated within 55 kilometers by road and 15 kms by sea from the Port Blair.
Tourists can reach Mount Harriet in 2 hrs by road and in about 40 min. by ferry. The sea route is
from the Marine Jetty to Hope Town and from there to Mount Harriet by road. This is
situated opposite Port Blair This is the second highest peak of these islands (the first one is
Saddle peak).

The height of the Mount Harriet is about 1200 ft. After reaching Hope Town by bus or by ferry, it
will take another 80 minutes to reach the peak of the Mount Harriet. All tourists go up to the
peak and enjoy the natural scenic beauty.

They can see from the peak, the large part of South Andaman and other small islands like
Havelock, Ross and Neil and can enjoy rare flora and fauna, endemic birds, animals, butterflies
etc. As per the records, the Mount Harriet was frequently used as summer resort by the British
Chief Commissioners.

The Forest Department has constructed a rest house for its own use. However, the tourists are
also allowed to stay (Indian tourists can stay during night) with the permission of the Chief Wild
Life Warden, Port Blair/the Forest department, Haddo. Tourists are advised to take eatables,
snacks, food and water with them.

Cinque Island: This Island is an uninhabited one. This is situated 35 kms from Port Blair and has
been declared a sanctuary. From Wandoor it takes 2 hrs and from Port Blair 3 hrs and from
Chiddiatoppu 11/2 hrs to reach this island by ferry or boat. Cinque Island is an enchanting one
with rare corals and underwater marine life, a fine sandy beach and tropical rain forest. This
beach is an excellent one for diving, snorkeling, sunbath, sand bath, etc. This island offers the
lure of underwater corals ground and beautiful beach.

Dolphin fishes greet the eyes. At present, no scheduled boat or ferry goes to this island but the
tour conducted by the tour operator like Sagar Travels, Shompen Hotels etc., on a contract basis.
The tourists can enjoy the beauty of spotted deers found in plenty in these islands. Tourists can
go to the island but are not allowed to stay overnight.

Tourism department offers tented accommodation facility to the tourists at a reasonable rate.
Tourists are advised to carry eatables, drinking water etc., with them as nothing is available in
this island to eat and drink.

Madhuban : It is a beautiful place and trekking area situated in the north east of South
Andaman at a distance of 80 kms by road from Port Blair bus terminus and 25 kms by sea from
Mount Harriet. This place has a very interesting colourful view. It is a real, enchanting and
enthralling sight to see the elephants which are trained to carryout different operations of log
extraction in the tropical jungles of these islands.

Madhuban is a very famous place for taking seabath. This area also abounds sunny and golden
beaches where one can bask in the sun. Tourists can enjoy the beauty of exotic flora and fauna,
endemic birds, animals, butterflies and trained elephants lumbering on, which are the most
interesting part of the trek.
Sippighat : This place is situated 14 kms from Port Blair bus terminus on the way to Wandoor.
Just on the top of the Sippighat bus stand is located Sri Ayyappa Temple. Local people tourists
visit this temple for prayers. The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has established an
agricultural farm. The total area of this farm is 80 acres.

Scientists contribute their full efforts in experimenting many new varieties of plants and species
which have high potential growth in these islands. As a result of these experiments the excellent
growth of clove, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, pinapples, papaya, oranges and bananans etc., has
been achieved and it has been proved that these can be produced on a large scale in these
Islands. Just nearby this farm, the Central Agricultural Research Institute has established
another experimental farm for growing coconut plants in saline water.

Maximum visitors go around this farm, at present, only for the academic purpose. Tourists are
allowed to go and visit this farm. Timings are from 6 am to 11.15 am and from 12 noon to 13.00
am and it is closed on Sundays and other public holidays.

Neil Island: This is a separate and beautiful island with lush green forest and sandy beaches.
This is an inhabited island covering a total area of 7.3 sq. miles. Comparatively, more Bengalis
inhabit here and the total population of this island is 2463 including 4 tribals as per the 1991
census. This island is situated at a distance of 45 kms from Port Blair Phoniex Bay Jetty. The main
work of the people of this island is vegetable cultivation.
Maximum vegetables are sent to different islands only from Neil Island. The wholesale
vegetable merchants purchase the vegetables at cheap rates and sell them Port Blair, Rangat,
Mayabunder, etc., at high prices. The Neil Island can be called the "Kitchen Garden of the A & N
Islands". The Island has beautiful sand beaches surrounded by the forests which attract the
tourists. Among the beaches, Sitapur Beach is the most important one. This beach is
surrounded by beautiful tropical rain forests.

Tourists have recently started visiting this beach. The A & N Administration operates ferry
service to Neil Island. Normally it takes 4-5 hrs to reach Neil Island by boat depending upon the
weather conditions. The tour operators, offer chartered boats but it turns out to be expensive.
The Neil Island has one accommodation, run by the tourism department, where the tourists can

Havelock: This is also a separate, charming island with lush green forest and sandy beaches.
This island is named after the famous Gen. Havelock. The island is partly hilly and partly plain.
This is an inhabited island. The population of this island is 3681 as per 1991 census. Major part
of the population is Bengalis. This island is at a distance of 57 kms from Port Blair Phoniex, Jetty
connected by ferry service.

It takes five hours to reach this island from Port Blair depending upon weather conditions. The
main features of this island are that the land is fertile; the beaches are natural, serene and
unpolluted. The main occupation of the people of this island is cultivation of vegetables and
fruits. Near the jetty, the tourist department has constructed a beautiful accommodation called
Yatri Niwas.

Among the beaches, the most important one is Radha Nagar beach, which attracts the tourists
and is situated at a distance of about 10 kms. from Yatri Niwas. The tourist department has
developed this beach with care. Tourists can enjoy the play of Dolphins, the marine life and
other flying fishes etc., when they travel by ferry to this island. They can have camping facility
near the Radha Nagar beach. One can also reach the beach directly from the Neil Island Jetty

Long Island: This is a small inhabited island situated at a distance of 85 kms from Port Blair,
Phoniex Bay Jetty. The population of this island is 1917, mainly rural as per 1991 census. This
island is connected with other places by ferry service. There is small scale industrial unit
producing plywood named Jayashree Timber products. The long island has an important
beautiful unpolluted natural sandy beach called Lalaji beach surrounded by thick rain forest and
coconut plantation, located at a distance of about 11 kms by jungle trek and six kms. by sea.
This beach is suitable for snorkling, diving and swimming.

There are beautiful corals on this beach. Those who wish to spend days without being disturbed
can go to this island and stay there. The Long Island has two guest houses one is owned by
Forest department and the other by small scale unit.

Tourists can stay in the Forest guest house with the prior permision from the Forest
Department, Haddo. Tourists are advised to carry all eatables, essential items from the Long
Island shops as nothing is available at the beach. To reach the beach, the tourist can bargain
with the local fishermen for the small fishing boats, the journey by which is very interesting.
