The Last 10 days of August 2011 were invited by our friend Lena Arvanitaki in Zante and stayed at the "Arhontiko"
in Katastari, a fantastic traditional tourist unit which is operated and functions like a Swiss watch by Mary (sister
of Lena) and Stephanos Voutos and their two sons Dimitris and Paul.
The text below provides a general description of the geology of the island and photographs of minerals and rocks
(often with fossils) from Zakynthos and other materials associated with this beautiful and fertile island of Greece.
The island of Zakynthos or Zante or "Anthos of the East - Fiore di Levante - by the Venetians is located across the
western coast of Peloponnesos. The eastern part of the island is fertile with olive trees , seedless grapes (type
currants), vegetables, while the western part is mountainous. The horizontal and vertical partition of the island
operates in such a way that when it rains, rain water is channelled from the eastern slopes of the mountainous
western part of the island in the eastern fertile lowland that acts as a catchment of rainwater. The island is one of
the last shelter for the sea turtle caretta - caretta and the Mediterranean monk seal monachus - monachus. That is
why the National Marine Park in the Gulf of Laganas , has been created for their protection. Zakynthos is an island
with a unique culture. Had great intellectual flowering and great personalities who have excelled in arts, literature,
poetry etc originate from Zakynthos Island. It is the hometown of our national poet Dionysios Solomos and Andreas
Kalvos.The island is separated from the Peloponnese by a channel up to 600 meters deep. To the southwest the
seabed plunges steeply to form the Greek trough . (See image from Google Earth.
The red arrows indicate the Greek Trough - Hellenic Trough).The tectonic structure of the island is
parallel to the Greek zone of Hellenides in a subduction zone of regional compression. Like Cephalonia, the island
of Zakynthos is located in a zone of high seismic activity. Many of the local earthquakes have focal point along the
fault east of the town of Zante in Laganas Bay. The rocky background is similar to that of Kefalonia.
The ridge in the western part of the island consists of Late Creataceous to Eocene limestones. Oligocene Pleiocene
sandstones and other sediments found in low land areas. There are gypsum layers within the rocks and it appears
that gypsum deposits south of the town of Zakynthos have undergone extensive exploitation. In the southeastern
peninsula seems that the oldest rocks have been thrusted over younger rocks to the west. There are many breccia
rocks may have formed from collapse of the overlying rocks into the caves developed by solution of gypsum. Suck
breccia are on the top of Mount Skopos (485 m). Mining of pleiocene sandstones have taken place near Cape
Geraki. The city of Zakynthos is located on Pleiocene -Pleistocene marls and sandstones. At Castle Hill (196 m) there
is a cover of Pleistocene conglomerate which is harder than the underlying Pleiocene rocks and somehow protects
them from erosion.
In the southwestern peninsula of Zakynthos, near Lake Keri (now a swamp), there is a natural spring , known as
Herodotus Spring , where bitumen is known since the antiquity. Bitumen was used in antiquity for caulking boats
and waterproof seal containers of wine. Also used as a protective metal and "magic" purposes. Reported that it had
many medicinal properties and cured everything from simple cough to diarrhoea and back pain or lumbago. Bitumen
is the residue left where petroleum has speeded up to the surface and the lighter, more volatile components (like
paraffin / kerosene and petrol/gasoline) have been lost by evaporation. The bedrocks here are Paleocene -
Oligocene limestone, but the petroleum may have come from deeper rocks, probably Cretaceous limestones found in
other parts of the island. In such sedimentary rocks petroleum forms from plant organisms by the action of heat in
the absence of oxygen. Petroleum is lighter than water and tends to migrate upwards through permeable rocks or
along faults, unless it is trapped. The presence of bitumene in Keri Zakynthos triggered further oil exploration in
western Greece and the Ionian Sea. The limestones in Keri contain rudist fossils as well as foraminifera , echinoids ,
corals and bryozoa. Fossils exist also in limestones in other areas in the Island.
It is very interesting for collectors to look for fine crystalline gypsum specimens in Miocenic sedimentary rocks
sandstones , mudstones and bluish marls : This sequence of sedimentary rocks has a total thickness of 700 meters In
the higher members gypsum intercalations , cohesive clay with gypsum and sandstone with gypsum are present. The
gypsum is coarse crystalline with well developed crystals and in beds of 5-20 meters .

While in Zakynthos , we visited areas in Gerakari where according to information there was mining of sulphur.
Despite our efforts it was not possible to locate sulphur specimens as the area nowadays has been modified and
everything is covered. We thank Mr. Stefanos Voutos and Mr. George Pothos for their help in guiding us to try to
locate sulphur localities in Zakynthos Island. Perhaps next time we will be more lucky ! We must note that in the
visited areas for sulphur , there was no sulphur odour either in the environment or in fresh broken rock specimens
in the same area.
