Julius Caesar

Word Plays: Persuasion using linguistic features

Consider the speech Cassius made about Caesar and how his rule will affect the future of Rome.
Then relate these characteristics to Cassius strategy for winning Brutus over to the conspirators.

Example Sentences: *

We will surely perish if we dont take a stand.

Our lives will be endangered if they we let them free.

It would seem that the inclusive language and weighted language are prominent factors in the creation of the
impact these sentences apply. Sophisticated language can also show intelligence; thus you may be seen as a
person with good knowledge of the problem at hand (or the argument you are attempting to win) helping to
support your position on the issue. Implying generalised and exaggerated cause and effect situations may
entice people to reconsider the consequences of the action.

* - please note that the words that are underlined in these sentences are the words being alluded to in the above paragraph.

Now consider the speech Cassius makes to Brutus at the end of scene one, beginning with Why,
man, he doth bestride the narrow road. Highlight Cassius language he uses to manipulate Brutus
against Caesar. Also identify the language Brutus uses to combat Cassius attacks; this being in the
speech That you do love me.
