SUBJECT SYLLABUS
COURSE DESCRIPTION :
An introductory course on the creative output of man designed to introduce and expose the
students to the different arts both in theory and practice, visual, auditory and performing arts. It also aims
to develop the students inner life, increase their awareness of and sensitivity to the state of Philippine arts
and culture.
VISION:
Clearing the paths while laying new foundations to transform the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines into an epistemic community.
MISSION:
Reflective of the great emphasis being given by the country's leadership aimed at providing appropriate
attention to the alleviation of the plight of the poor, the development of the citizens, and of the national
economy to become globally competitive, the University shall commit its academic resources and
manpower to achieve its goals through:
a. Provision of undergraduate and graduate education which meet international standards of quality
and excellence;
b. Generation and transmission of knowledge in the broad range of disciplines relevant and
responsive to the dynamically changing domestic and international environment;
c. Provision of more equitable access to higher education opportunities to deserving and qualified
Filipinos; and
d. Optimization, through efficiency and effectiveness, of social, institutional, and individual returns
and benefits derived from the utilization of higher education resources.
1. Provide quality education thorough instruction, advance research and extension services;
2. Produce world-class professionals as potential industry leaders and job providers;
3. Develop and produce facilities through the use of adapted technology and indigenous materials;
and
4. Maintain, upgrade or improve facilities through the application of engineering technology.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A. Cognitive Aims
1. To acquaint the students with the meaning of art and artistic expression.
2. To acquaint the students theoretically to the visual, auditory and performing arts (traditional
and contemporary) by the study of the types, mediums, basic elements and principle of
organization of each form.
3. To trace the development of art through the ages and relate this to mans changing view of
and attitude to life and the world around him.
4. To pay special consideration to Filipino art and artistic folk and ethnic arts and crafts, and to
encourage research and study on them.
5. To acquaint the students with significant oriental and occidental art forms.
B. Value Aims
1. Develop the students capacities to perceive, understand and appreciate works of arts through
a critical analysis of the different elements, mediums and techniques.
2. Appreciate the role of Philippine arty in the development of our national identity and our
historical consciousness.
3. Explore the possibilities as active participants in the making of a democratic and nationalist
Philippine culture as creators, critics and consumers.
