Exercise 2

Material Balance Calculations (Zero-Dimensional Analysis)

The following parameters apply to an oil reservoir:

Porosity, compressibilities

= 10% , cw = 5,110 5 bar 1 , cr = 3,9 10 5 bar 1

Initial conditions

P = 345 bar , T = 116 C , Sw1 = 21,6%

Black Oil PVT data

Pressure Bo Rso
(bar) (r.vol/st.vol) (st.vol/st.vol)
345 1,305 89,1
231 1,338 89,1
190 1,350 89,1
103 1,250 66,8

Gas PVT data

Compute the required gas properties from the real gas equation, using standard conditions of T = 20 C and

P = 1,0133 bar , where Z=1,0, and final conditions of T = 116 C and P = 103 bar , where Z = 0 ,9

Production data

Reservoir Cumulative Cumulative Cumulative

231 240.000 21.384.000 0
103 1.023.000 105.678.000 0

Questions

1) Derive the necessary material balance equations, or start with the general form of the equation and simplify
it for this specific case.
2) Use the equations to calculate initial oil in place, N, using production data at 231 bar
3) Use the equations to calculate initial oil in place, N, using production data at 103 bar

In both cases 2) and 3), do the calculations with and without rock and water compressibilities, in order to se the
effect of these.
