ABSTRACT

Students are required to undergo industrial training

for one month as part of the requirement to complete
the 4 years course for the bachelor of engineering
(Hons.) electrical and electronics engineering. The
attachment was held during the semester break of the
6th semester of the study. During the one month
period of training, students will be supervised and
monitored by one supervisor. The industrial training
was completed at AARTECH SOLONICS PVT LTD.
During the one month of training the working
environment was successfully exposed in order to
gain more experience and knowledge.
COMPANY OVERVIEW:-

Aartech believes in entrepreneurially driven identification

of specialized and selected applied energy applications,
followed by careful application of its R&D, domain
knowledge and skills in an integrated systems solution
approach to meet such growing challenges.

Its business practice is designed around the concept of

System Solution Division (SSDs). It is a reflection of
Aartechs commitment to strive to provide comprehensive
system solutions, and not just isolated products or services
to its customers. It has several operative System Solution
Divisions (SSDs), BTS 2000 - Microprocessor Based Fast Bus
Transfer Systems (being the flagship SSD at present), Ultra-
Capacitor, Load Checker, Control & Relay Panel naming a
few.
As part of its stated value of being a multi-product, multi-
technologist company, Aartech has an open-door policy for
techno-entrepreneurs in India and abroad to explore the
possibilities of joining Aartechs creative efforts.
COMPANY PRODUCTS:-

BTS 2000 :-
BTS 2000 Fast Bus Transfer System is an advanced
microprocessor based Bus Transfer System for Power
Generation Utilities & Continuous Process Industries. By
performing high speed motor bus transfers between two
independent sources of power under prescribed safe system
parameters, the Bus Transfer System provides continuity of
power supply to the critical motors of a plant. This pre-
empts any interruption to the processes running in the
plant in spite of the contingency of the feeding source.

Aartech has more than 25 years of experience in deploying

fast bus transfer system solutions and 300's of installations
to a variety of demanding system requirements.

BTS 2000 is a proven solution in thermal

power generation as well as nuclear power generation of
ratings from 25MW captive power units right upto
660MW. It has been selectively used in hydro
power generation units as well.

Many of the continuous process facilities

including Metals, Petrochemical, Mining, Water
Handling are finding rich benefit by use of these systems.
Industrial requirements are generally more stringent and
non-empirical, and the power quality, process sensitivity,
interruption nature, reliability issues and system response
need to be evaluated on a case-to-case basis to offer an
appropriate solution.
KRANKING ULTRACAPACITORS:-
About Kranking
The KranKing range of Ultracapacitors has been specially
designed for engine-cranking applications. They can greatly
reduce the burden on lead-acid batteries during engine-
starting (cranking), enabling a substantial reduction in the
battery-size, and improved battery-life. Unlike batteries
whose service life seldom exceeds 1000 cycles,
KranKing devices have proven their performance for over
300,000 cycles, between -45C to 55C!! Thus, the overall
reliability of the engine-cranking system can be greatly
enhanced.

10 years.
The meter shall be tamper-proof, having suitable locking
arrangement. Locking by method of password may also be offered

DIRECTIONAL OVERCURRENT RELAY: -

Directional overcurrent relaying (67) refers to relaying that can use
the phase relationship of voltage and current to determine
direction to a fault. There are a variety of concepts by which this
task is done. This paper will review the mainstream methods by
which 67 type directional decisions are made by protective relays.
The paper focuses on how a numeric directional relay uses the
phase relationship of sequence components such as positive
sequence (V1 vs. I1 ), negative sequence (V2 vs. I2), and zero
sequence (V0 vs. I0) to sense fault direction, but other concepts
such as using quadrature voltage (e.g., VAB vs Ic) are included.

DISTANCE PROTECTION RELAY: -

There is one type of relay which functions depending upon the
distance of fault in the line. More specifically, the relay operates
depending upon the impedance between the point of fault and the
point where relay is installed. These relays are known as distance
relay or impedance relay.

Types of Distance or Impedance Relay

There are mainly two types of distance relay-

1. Definite distance relay.

2. Time distance relay.
80DC SUPERVISION RELAY: -
This type of relay is used to supervise the DC supply. The relay coil
terminals 1 & 2 are connected to the DC supply, which is to be
monitored. In case, the DC auxiliary supply is available, the relays
NO contact closes and healthy status is indicated through
WHITE flag. In the absence of the DC auxiliary supply, the same is
indicated through RED flag.

EARTHING ARRANGEMENTS-
All control and relay panels shall be provided with copper earth bar
of a sectional area of not less than 150 mm2run along the bottom of
the panels with provisions at each end to be connected to the
adjacent panel and can be joint together to form a common bus.
Common earthing bus thus formed shall be connected to the
station earthing system via copper earthing connection of size not
less than 185 mm2. The common earthing of earth bus inside
panels will be at two locations to earth grid. Metal cases of
instruments and metal bases of relays on the panels shall be
connected to this bar by conductors of a sectional area of not less
than 2.5 mm2.

9. CONCLUSION-
1. Made for protection of switchgear
2. Actual analysis.

3. Fast sensing fault.

4. These panels are used for the control & monitoring of

electrical Equipments such as transformers, generators and

circuit breakers.
10. GLOSSARY-
Adjustable Alarm Level A setting on a
protection relay at which an LED or an output
contact operates to activate a visual or audible
alarm.

Adjustable Time Delay A setting on a

protection relay that determines the time
between the fault detection and relay operation.

Alarm Relay Contact The output of the relay

that acts as a switch and is connected to a visual
or audible alarm.

Analog Output A 01 mA, 420 mA or 05 Vdc

signal from a protection relay used to pass
information to a device or controller.

Current Transformer (CT) A transformer that

produces a current in its secondary circuit in a
known proportion to current in its primary circuit.
CT Loop The electrical circuit between a current
transformer and a protection relay or monitoring
device.

CT Loop Monitoring Continuous check of CT

loop continuity to verify connection.
CT Saturation A condition that occurs when a
current transformer (CT) cannot maintain a
secondary current proportional to a large primary
current.
CT Local Saturation Poorly installed phase
conductors and large currents can cause an output
from a zero-sequence (ground-fault) CT even
though there is no fault.

Current-Based Protection Protection

parameters (trip-levels/data collection etc.) derived
from current levels in a circuit.

Current-Trip Setting Selectable level of current

at which a relay will operate.

EFCT (Earth Fault Current Transformer) A

current transformer engineered to accurately detect
low level ground-fault current. The words earth
fault and ground fault are used interchangeably.

Feeder All circuit conductors between the service

equipment, the source of a separately derived
system, or other power supply source and the final
branch-circuit over current device.

Motor Lockout A condition where for safety

Reasons, the operator is prevented from starting the
motor.

Motor Protection Overload protection designed

to protect the windings of a motor from high
current levels. Modern motor protection relays add
many additional features, such as metering, data
logging and communications.

N.C. Contact (Normally Closed Contact) Relay

contact that is closed when the relay is not
energized.

N.O. Contact (Normally Open Contact) Relay

contact that is open when the relay is not
energized.

Relay An electrical switch that opens and closes a

contact (or contacts) under the control of another
circuit.

Relay Operating Mode Fail-safe or non-fail-safe

methods of operation used for under voltage or
Shunt trip breakers.
