Construction & operation of the lubrication system
During a lubricating procedure, all of the lubrication points LP connected to the system are lubricated
one after the other in a predetermined sequence (progressive system).
The flow sequence and amount of lubricant for each lubrication point depend on the combination of
the distributors and lubrication lines and on the piston sizes of the different distribution elements.
Caution!
When operating a machine and especially if it is fitted with a special working attachment, make sure
to lubricate daily all the lubrication points which may be installed separately, i. e. which are not con-
nected to the central lubrication system.
On some backhoe attachments, some grease fittings may be installed separately in the area of
the connector bracket and shifting lever for the digging tool.
With special attachments (telescopic stick, hydraulic offset boom, ...) some bearing points at the
attachment or at the working tool are possibly not connected to the central lubrication system.
This bearing points have to be lubricated daily via separately mounted, red marked lubricating nip-
ples and using a grease gun or a manual grease pump.
Notice!
The standard undercarriages of crawler excavators do not require daily lubrication.
On undercarriages with special design necessitating regular lubrication (undercarriages with adjust-
able track width, ...) the lubrication points are not connected to the centralized lubrication. For de-
scription of the corresponding lubrication works, see the subgroups related to the special
maintenance for these undercarriages.

Operation of the full automatic lubrication system
Note!
The time necessary for the lubrication is dependent on the grease viscosity and temperature and
on the design and number of connected components. At very low temperatures up to 30 minutes
may be necessary for sufficient lubrication.
During lubrication, the delivery of grease can be checked visually while observing, through the
transparent cap 27.2 of the stroke controller 27 mounted to the top of the main distributor 2, that the
indicator stem 27.1 moves alternately in and out.
Lubrication intervals.
Under normal working conditions a semi automatic lubrication must be performed daily.
If the machine is used under hard conditions (working under water, in very abrasive material,
) or in multi shift service, it is necessary to lubricate more often (up to once a working shift
or every 4 hours).

Operation of the full automatic lubrication system
At each stroke of a piston in this element, the switch B51 gives a pulse signal to the control unit 16,
which stops the lubricating procedure as soon as the preadjusted number of strokes has been
reached.

Note!
Avoid refilling the container 13 via the upper cover 23, since it could create an air pocket in the con-
tainer and cause the pump 15 to run dry.
Insert a grease cartridge in the special filling pump 31 (Id. No. 10009239)
connect the pump to the fitting 21
push the whole content of the cartridge into the container 13.
For indication of ordering number of grease cartridges, refer to subgroup "lubricants specifications".
If the special filling pump 31 or the grease cartridges are not available:
refill the container 13 through the grease fitting 22, using a grease gun.

Lube pump description
This subgroup describes the fully automatic lube pump comprising a controller unit 16 which triggers
the lubricating procedures.
However the descriptions in this group are also valid for the semi-automatic pump (started and
stopped by a button in the cab). For this second pump, only the informations concerning the control-
ler unit 16 (mainly the parts 4 and 5) do not apply.
The set of the lubrication unit U4 is constituted of a transparent grease tank 13, of an electric motor
10 which drives the lubrication pump 15 and the stirrer 12 and of an integrated controller unit 16 sit-
uated underneath, which triggers the lubrication procedures.
The lubrication pump can be fitted with up to three pumping elements working independent one of
the other .

Removal and installation of a pumping element
Caution!
Rotating agitator blade and pump! Risk of injury to fingers and hands!
Switch off the pump prior to removing or installing a pumping element.
3.1 Removal:
Pull the pumping element 15 out of the bore in the housing 3 with the piston 7 partly pulled-out
and swung upwards (pumping element 15 is swund downward).
When removing the pumping element 15, ensure that the piston 7 is not left behind in the pump
housing.
Remove the sealing ring 14 from the pump housing 3.
3.2 Installation:
Install the sealing ring 14 on the pump housing 3.
Insert the pumping element 15 with partly pulled-out piston 7, diagonally upwards into the bore in
the housing 3 (see drawing a)
When the piston head touches the pressure ring 6, rotate the element into a horizontal position
(see drawing b)
the piston head must run in the guiding groove of the ring 6.
Screw in to the stop the pumping element 15 and tighten.
Note!
The connection of a proximity switch B51 is necessary only for fully automatic lube pumps.
MJFCIFSS
Service manual Lubrication pump
Integrated control system (EP-tronic)
During a lubricating procedure, all lube points are lubricated one after the other in a certain sequence
(progressive system). For each piston stroke in the metering device 2.3 of the main distributor 2, the
proximity sensor B51 generates an impulse.
The controller unit 16 stops the pump as soon as a complete lubrication procedure is over, that
means, as soon as the impulses number reaches the preset value NS (Number of strokes)
MJFCIFSS
Lubrication pump Service manual
Integrated control system (EP-tronic)
During a lubrication procedure of the lubrication unit 2, the control light inside the push button S84
and the green LED 17 are on continuously.
After completion of the lubrication procedure, when the preset number of strokes NS has been de-
tected by the proximity switch B51 the controller unit stopps the pump.
The next lubrication procedure will begin automatically after the predefined "cycle duration" CD is
over .
In case of a failure in the lube circuit (no stroke signal delivered by the proximity switch B51 about 20
minutes after begin of a lubrication procedure) both LEDs 17 and 18 and the control light inside S84
will start blinking simultaneously.
The possible causes are:
a plugged or kinked lubrication line, (in this case the grease will flow out of the relief valve 9),
a failure of the switch B51 or of its connecting wire,
the use of too viscous grease at very low temperatures,
not enough grease in the grease tank 13,
a problem in the 24 V electrical circuit for the motor 14.
Immediately locate and remedy the cause of the trouble.
A data memory holding all the relevant parameter data (i.e. times, number of strokes, ...) is integrated
in the electronic control unit.
When the ignition of the machine is turned off, either during a lubrication procedure or during the
break between two procedures, the number of completed strokes and the cycle times are recorded.
When the ignition is switched on again, the relevant data concerning the interrupted cycle are read
from the memory and the lubrication cycle restarts, going on at the point it was stopped.
If the internal battery of the controller unit is defective, the red LED 18 flashes at intervals of 0,5 sec-
onds.
If the lubrication system is in working order, an additional lubricating procedure of the lube unit can
be started any time by depressing either the push button S84 on the rear control desk or the touch
19 on the motor housing. This additional procedure might also be started for test purposes. The pump
immediately starts a new lube cycle, and the previously recordedcycle data (strokes, time, ...) are re-
set

Service manual Progressive distributor SX-E
Function
1 Function
The progressive piston distributors SXE-2 are distribution units with hydraulic sequence control,
whose pistons are controlled by the lubricant supply so that the lubricant is forced in sequence
through the individual outlets. If faults occur in the lubricant flow, e.g. blockage of lubricant lines or
lubricant points, this will block the distributor.
This blocking is used to monitor the distributor. A strong counter-pressure that is difficult to overcome
occurs in manually operated pumps if there is a blockage. In automatic pumps, the lubricant escapes
via the pressure-relief valve. The progressive distributors SXE-2 are produced in variable modular
formats. This has the advantage that the distributor, i.e. the number of lubricant points and their vol-
umes can be changed as required without too much outlay.
The progressive distributor SXE-2 consists mainly of distributor panels. These consist of a basic unit
and a dosing unit or a blind unit. Basic units are divided into start units, middle units and end units.
This modular design means that both the delivery rate of individual outlets and the number of outlets
themselves can be modified.
The various delivery rates per piston stroke are achieved by the different piston diameters of the dos-
ing units, which can be exchanged as required. A blind unit can be used to reduce the number of lu-
bricant points in an existing distributor or a basic unit with dosing unit can be removed. The distributor
can be expanded at any time by adding another basic unit with dosing unit.

It is possible to combine the delivery rate of two outlets from the same basic unit or the delivery rates
of outlets from two different, but neighbouring, basic units.
To combine the delivery rates from two outlets on the same basic unit, the two outlets are combined
by removing the sealing screw between the outlet sides and plugging one outlet with a plug screw.
The delivery rate from the sealed side is now forced through the open side, i.e. the delivery rate of
the open side doubles.
To separate combined outlets on the progressive distributor, reinsert the sealing screw and sealing
ring.

If three outlets are combined, one of the sealing screws on one of the two basic units concerned must
be removed.
A distributor link with outlet replaces, on one side, the outlet threaded fittings of the neighbouring dis-
tributor panels whose outlets are being combined. When the sealing screw 1 is removed from the out-
let on the basic unit opposite the distributor link 3, it must be replaced by a plug screw 2. The delivery
rates of all three outlets are then forced through the distributor link outlet.
If four outlets are combined, the sealing screws 1 in both basic units must be removed and a plug
screw 2 inserted in both outlets opposing the distributor link 3. The delivery rates of all four outlets
are then forced through the distributor link 3 outlet.

distributor link 3 without outlet. One of the outlets opposite the distributor link 3 must be sealed with
a plug screw 2. The other outlet then serves as the outlet for all combined delivery rates from the out-
lets of the distributor panels concerned.
The distributor links can be combined together to combine five or more outlets. The procedure is as
described above.

Phase B
The piston (II) is pushed to the left and the lubricant is pushed to outlet 2 from the left pressure cham-
ber of the delivery piston.
Subsequently, the dosing piston (III) is progressively pushed and the lubricant delivered to outlet 3.
Phase C
After the piston is pushed (II), the lubricant is moved to the left side of the delivery piston (I) and
moved from the right pressure chamber of the delivery piston (I) to outlet 4.
Subsequently, the delivery pistons (II) and (III) are pushed and the lubricant delivered to outlets 5 and

Function
1 Function
The progressive piston distributors are distributor devices with a hydraulic sequence control, the pis-
tons of which are regulated by the supplied lubricant in a way that the lubricant inevitably and suc-
cessively escapes at the individual outlets. In the case of malfunctions during the flow of lubricant,
e.g. clogging of lubricating line or lubricating points, the distributors will block up. This blockage is
used for the monitoring of the distributors. In the case of manually operated pumps a virtually insur-
mountable counter pressure occurs during the blockage. In the case of automatic pumps such as e.g.
the electropump EP-1 the lubricant escapes at the relief valve. The progressive distributors are man-
ufactured in a variable disk construction, permitting a variable configuration according to the amount
of lubricating points, their positions on the vehicle and their necessary lubricant dose. Which also of-
fers the advantage that the distributor can be extended or shortened according to the hydraulic
scheme to realise. Due to this disk construction there is also the possibility of constructing an overall
progressive distributor from individual distributor disks with different outputs per piston stroke. The
difference in output per piston stroke is achieved by different piston diameters. To ensure the proper
functioning of a progressive distributor a minimum of three pistons, i.e. a minimum of three output
elements is required.

Progressive distributor MX-F Service manual
Description
The progressive distributors consists of the individual components initial element AE (without piston),
middle elements ME and end element EE, all of which are assembled in distributor blocks by using
tie rods (hexagon socket screws) with lock washers. The individual elements are sealed with 0-rings.
All union pieces with a threaded connection of M10x1 can be screwed into an initial element AE with-
out inlet union piece. The outlet fittings are screwed into the middle and end elements ME / EE.

disks. As a result, the output of all three outlets escapes at the outlet of the distributor bridge. For the
connection of only two outlets (on different adjacent distributor disks) the grub screw F may not be
removed from either of the two concerned distributor disks. As a result, the output of both the outlets
escapes at the outlet of the distributor bridge.
Phase B
The piston (I) is shifted to the left and the lubricant is pressed from the left pressure range of the de-
livery piston to the outlet 1. After that, the proportioning pistons (II) and (III) are progressively shifted
and the lubricant is primed to the outlets 2 and 3.

ly, the delivery pistons (II) and (III) are shifted and the lubricant is pressed to the outlets 5 and 6. After
the delivery piston (III) has been shifted, the lubricant is once more directed to the right side of the
delivery piston (figure A) and a new cycle of the progressive piston distributor is initiated. The de-
scribed function is repeated as long as lubricant is fed to the progressive distributor.

so that the hose is not properly held in place in the collet.
Corrective :
Slightly press the tip (1 or 2 mm) of the collet 3 at the hose insertion side to an oval shape.
This prevents that the hose is pushed off the collet when the pipe nozzle 4 is screwed in.
