2.2 Target Mean Strength for Mix Design:

The target mean compressive strength ( f ck at 28 days is given by):
_
f ck = f ck + t s
where
fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days.
s = Standard deviation (Table 8 of IS 456-2000)
t = A statistic, depending upon the accepted proportion of low results and the number of
tests, for large number of tests, its value is given in Table-2 below.

Table 2: Values of t

Accepted Proportion of Low Results t

1 in 5 0.84
1 in 10 1.28
1 in 15 1.50
1 in 20 1.65
1 in 40 1.86
1 in 100 2.33

According to IS: 456-1978 and IS: 1343-1980, the characteristic strength is defined as
that value below which not more than 5 % (1 in 20) results are expected to fall. In such
case, the equation for target mean compressive strength reduces to:
f ck = f ck + 1.65 s

3.1 Selection of Water-Cement Ratio:

Different parameters like cement, aggregate, maximum size of aggregate, surface texture
of aggregate etc. is responsible for influencing the strength of concrete, when water-
cement ratio is constant. So it is useful to establish a relation between concrete strength
and free water-cement ratio for materials actually to be used. In case of absence of such
relationships, the free water-cement ratio with respect to target strength may be
determined from the relationship shown in Fig. 1.

3.2 Estimation of Entrapped Air Content

The air content is estimated from the Table 2C for the normal maximum size of aggregate
used.

Table 3: Approximate Entrapped Air Content

10 3.0
20 2.0
40 1.0

3.3 Selection of Water Content and Fine to Total Aggregate ratio:

Table 4 and Table 5 give the values of water content and percentage of sand in total
aggregate by absolute volume for medium (below grade M 35) and high strength (above
grade M 35) respectively. The two tables are based on the following conditions:
a) Crushed (Angular) coarse aggregate, conforming to IS: 383-1970,
b) Fine aggregate consisting of natural sand conforming to grading zone II of Table
4 of IS: 383-1970,
c) Water-cement ratio of 0.6 (by mass) for Table 3 and 0.35 (by mass) for Table 4,
d) Workability corresponding to compacting factor of 0.80
