Preface to the Guidelines, 5th Edition 2003

With the 5th edition 2003 the layout was adapted on the form used by VGB PowerTech
Service GmbH since the year 2000 and the text of the Guideline B 105 was converted to
standardized electronic formats.

The VGB Technical Committee Technical Classification Systems often specified in the
KKS Guidelines, became to the Working Panel Reference Designation and Plant
Documentation due to the structural changes of VGB in the last years.

This Working Panel treated various applications for amendments respectively

specifications of the KKS function and equipment unit keys since the publication of the last
revision 1995. The met resolutions are mentioned in index c, as at October 2003. By thus
the German and English editions of the KKS set of rules have the same contents and
edition conditions.

1 Purpose and Fields of Application

1.1 Scope of KKS

The Identification System for Power Stations "KKS" serves to identify plants, sections of
plants and items of equipment in any type of power station according to task, type and lo-
cation. It is to be used by all engineering disciplines for planning, licensing, construction,
operation and maintenance.
The KKS, or sections thereof, can be combined with other identification systems in order to
meet additional identification requirements.
One particular combination is that with the redundancy code. Redundancy codes result
from the need to identify redundancy groups. Redundancy groups are defined in KTA 3501
as combinations of items of equipment in a particular arrangement intended to ensure the
independence of redundant items of equipment. The items of equipment within a given
redundancy group are identified in keeping with the format for the total plant in accordance
with the KKS Guidelines. Referencing of redundancy groups is performed outside the
scope of the KKS code with the aid of a separate redundancy code. This is not covered by
these guidelines.

1.2 Requirements on KKS

The following requirements are considered:
- Uniform identification for all types of power station and any connected processes
- Sufficient capacity and detail for identification of all systems, components and struc-
tures
- Sufficient capacity for extension to accommodate new technologies
- Consistent identification for planning, licensing, construction, operation, mainte-
nance and waste management
- Interdisciplinary applicability to mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical
engineering and control and instrumentation combined with ability to identify ac-
cording to process functions, points of installation and locations
- Consideration of national and international standards
- Non-language-based coding to ensure international usability
- Application in computer processing

1.3 Features of KKS

To fulfil the above-mentioned requirements, KKS has the following features:
- Hierarchically structured format with 4 breakdown levels and fixed alphanumeric
data characters
- Separate identification methods with engineering discipline-specific rules by means
of a uniform code format for the three types of identification

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012
9

- Process-related identification
- Point of installation identification
- Location identification
In relation to the identification of plants, systems and items of equipment KKS considers
the following standards:

Content DIN IEC ISO

Format of alphanumeric
40719 Part 2
codes, breakdown symbols Publication
Edition
and electrical component 750, 1983
June 1978

Control and 19227 Part 1 Publication

instrumentation equipment, Edition 3511-1
measuring circuits October 1993 1977

DIN = Deutsche Industrie-Norm (German Industrial Standard)

IEC = International Electrotechnical Commission
ISO = International Organisation for Standardisation

The KKS Guidelines do not contain rules on:

- Combination of the code with other identification systems
- Methods of marking, e.g. in control rooms, local control stations, labelling of compo-
nents and identification in and of documents
- Open text abbreviations
- Identification of redundancies.

2 Format of Code

2.1 Types of Code and Breakdown Levels

In consideration of the various requirements placed on the identification of plants, sections
of plants and items of equipment in power stations, KKS has three different types of code:
- Process-related code
Process-related identification of systems and items of equipment according to their func-
tions in mechanical, civil, electrical and control and instrumentation engineering

- Point of installation code

Identification of points of installation of electrical and control and instrumentation devices in
installation units (e.g. in cabinets, panels, consoles)

- Location code
Identification of locations in structures, on floors and in rooms and also of fire areas and
topographical stipulations (surface area grid)

These three types of code use the same identification scheme, which is subdivided into
max. four breakdown levels.
The titles of the breakdown levels of the three types of code will be as follows:

Serial no. of
0 1 2 3
breakdown level

11

2.2 Prefix Symbols and Breakdown Symbols for Types of Code

The types of code are distinguished in accordance with DIN 40719, Part 2, by means of
prefix and breakdown symbols.

Serial no. of
0 1 2 3
breakdown level

Prefix symbol Breakdown symbol

The "full stop" breakdown symbol for point of installation identification must always be
written. The prefix symbols may be omitted if the information contents of the codes remain
unambiguous.

2.3 Format of Breakdown Levels

The code consists of breakdown levels. The individual breakdown levels are differently
formatted. They consist of classifying and numbering code elements. The latter consist of
data characters occupied by alpha characters and numeric symbols.
Serial no. of
0 1 2 3
breakdown level

Designation of F0 F1 F2 F3 FN A1 A2 AN A3 B1 B2 BN
G
data character
Type of data
A oder N N A A A N N A A N N N A A A N N
character

A = Alpha characters (Roman letters except I and O, and special symbols)

N = Numerical characters (Arabic numerals)

Within the breakdown levels and within the code groups the data characters places from
the left to the right smaller becoming units.
Read from left to right no data characters may be omitted. Special guidelines apply to data
characters G, F0 and A3.

The classifying coding letters and designations are project-independently in the KKS keys
as follows:
- Function key, for F1 / F1 F2 / F1 F2 F3 on breakdown level 1
- Equipment unit key, for A1 / A1 A2 on breakdown level 2
- Component key, for B1 / B1 B2 on breakdown level 3
The plain text designation of the key may be modified on a project-specific basis but only
provided that no content changes take place. Modifications must be taken by the parties
involved to the project.
"Blocked" coding letters are reserved for future technologies and new engineering
systems. They may only be allocated and released by the VGB Working Panel Reference
and Designation of Power Plants.
The letters of the alphabet are divided up between the main groups A1 and B1 . For this
reason certain letters may not be used within each group.

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012

These numbering code elements are subject to agreement between the project parties and
are project-independently regarding the numbering systems and the direction of num-
bering. However, the following principles apply:
- As a rule numbering starts anew when one of the preceding code elements
changes.
- Numbering may be consecutive or grouping.
- Numbering need not be continuous.
- Numbering conventions, once established, may not be altered, not even in the event
of changes made in the progress of planning.
- Redundant zeros must be written. Exceptions are fixed in the following one.
- An application-specific scheme of numbering may be established. However, such
schemes may not have the effect of reserving numbers in other applications, not
even within the same engineering discipline.

determining. The definition of numbering direction in the breakdown level 0 should take
place together with the numbering direction in the prefix of breakdown level 1 (see also
there).
Breakdown level 0 may be omitted if the remaining characteristic remains clear. This has
to be specified between the project parties.

4 Notation of Codes

The codes can be written with and without spacing but however it must be represented in
such a way that misinterpretations are avoided. The allowable way of writings is fixed.
Their use for any intended purpose is to be specified between the project parties.
Spaced way of writing supports the detectability and memory quality of codes. It can be
spaced by blank codes as well as by more-cellular way of writing
"Small spacing"
Blank spaces or dividing lines between the breakdown levels for codes which do not have
visually to be seized within a time limit.
"Large spacing"
Blank spaces or dividing lines between the alpha part and the numeric parts within the
breakdown levels, if these are more than four data code places long, e.g. for codes in the
control room, where in relatively short time codes must be seized.

5 Special Rules

5.1 Rules to the Keys

The KKS Key is divided into the following key parts:
- Function Key
- Equipment Unit Key
- Component Key
Free spaces:
A number of coding letters in main groups F1 groups F2 and subgroups F3 have been
reserved, for example to allow inclusion of future technologies. In main groups A1 and B1,
as well as in some subgroups, some coding letters have also been reserved. All reserved
coding letters can only be allocated with the agreement of the VGB Working Panel
Reference Designation and Plant Documentation.
In the Function Key it is not possible to make generally valid rules for certain coding letters
in data characters F2 and F3 since they depend exclusively on the configurations and ar-
rangements concerned. Similar considerations apply to A1 = E and G in the Equipment
Unit Key. In such cases a remark with the following meaning appears in the key part
concerned:
"...free for use for" i.e. the letters thus annotated may be used within the terms of
the stated definitions
or
"...free for use" i.e. unreserved letters may be used without any restrictions
within the terms of the stated definitions in F1 resp. F2
Details of application are to be specified between the project parties.

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012
31

Interfaces
The relevant pages of the Function Key show the interface definitions with the meanings
given below:

"from incl." means "including" the named item

"from excl." means "excluding" the named item
"to excl." means "excluding" the named item
"to incl." means "including" the named item

For some main groups F1 as e. g.:

F Handling of nuclear equipment
J Nuclear heat generation
K Reactor auxiliary system
the task of the system concerned is defined in addition to or instead of the interfaces.

5.2 System Codes for Heavy Machinery

Certain 'components' such as steam turbines used as drives for feedwater pumps can re-
quire so many identification details that, as 'heavy machinery', they need separate system
codes in order to permit identification of all associated mechanical equipment units and
electrical, control and instrumentation facilities. The system codes for such heavy machin-
ery are fixed as X in main group F1 .

5.3 Assignment of System Codes to Mechanical Equipment and Measuring Circuits

Equipment units are allocated to the system in which they are installed. When stipulating
system boundaries the originator principle applies.
For identification purposes, measuring circuits are allocated to the system where the
parameters are measured.

5.4 Special Rules for Mechanical Engineering

5.4.1 Valves
Valves as control elements in medium-prominent systems are allocated to the system in
which they are installed. Irrespective of their type of actuation they are identified by AA in
breakdown level 2.
Valves in medium-prominent measuring circuits are allocated to the measuring circuit and
are identified by KA in breakdown level 3.

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012
32

Shutoff valves between medium-prominent systems and a measuring circuit are allocated
to the medium-prominent system and identified by AA in breakdown level 2. Note: the
originator principle does not apply here.
Safety equipment comprising safety valves and the connected piping is allocated to the
system to which it is connected. Note: the originator principle does not apply here.
5.4.2 Supports
Supports are not identified in line with the originator principle. They can be allocated to a
system designation or a building/structure designation in breakdown level 1.
System-oriented identification is a feasible alternative when parts of the support can be
allocated to a particular system.
A building/structure-oriented identification is preferable when parts of different systems
share supports.
Supports are identified by BQ in breakdown level 2.
Details of application are to be specified between the project parties
5.4.3 Supply Systems
Where equipment units identified in breakdown level 1 and 2, require their own supply
systems, these supply systems are identified as subsystems to the overall system with an
identification code in breakdown level 1.
Supply systems serving several main groups of breakdown level 1 are treated as inde-
pendent supply systems and are provided with a key within the following main groups in
F1:
G Water supply and disposal
K Reactor auxiliary system
Q Auxiliary system
S Ancillary system
User (system) Supply system
Code Designation Code Designation
L.. Steam, water, gas cycle Auxiliary system
Q ..
M.. Main machine set (common to L.. and M..)

If several systems F2 or F3 are connected to a particular supply system, the following code
letters are stipulated for the corresponding data character F2 or F3 in breakdown level 1:
V Lubricant supply system
W Sealing fluid supply system
X Fluid supply system for control and protection equipment.
The stipulations for V and W do not apply to main groups A, B, C, D, U and Z of break-
down level 1.

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012
33

The use of the letters at data characters F2 and F3 is illustrated in the following table using
the sealing fluid supply system as an example.
User (system) Supply system
Code Designation Code Designation
LA. Feedwater system
Sealing fluid supply system
LB. Steam system LW. for steam, water, gas cycle
(common to LA., LB. u. LC.)
LC. Condensate system
LAB Feedwater piping system

LAC Feedwater pump system LAW system (common to LAB,
LAC and LAD)
LAD HP feedwater heating system

5.5 Special Rules for Civil Engineering

If a building or structure covers several engineering process systems, the code for this
building is priority-specified.
Details of application are to be specified between the project parties.
For the identification of special structures, ducting and bridge structures in main group F1 =
U the subgroups F3 =
X Special structures
Y Bridge structures
Z Ducting structures
are stipulated in almost all cases.

5.6 Special Rules for Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering

5.6.1 Shared Equipment for Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engi-
neering
Combined electrical, control and instrumentation equipment
Combined electrical, control and instrumentation equipment for measurement, closed- and
open-loop control and power unit (e. g. combined in one cabinet) are identified in
breakdown level 1 using the letters CM to CT (subdivision for system combinations). If
necessary a further grouping can be made in FN.
Transducer Racks, Supports, Scaffolding
These are not identified according to the originator principle. They can be allocated a sys-
tem code (e. g. auxiliary equipment at main machine sets and heavy machinery) or a
building/structure code in breakdown level 1. In breakdown level 2 transducer racks, sup-
ports and scaffolding must receive the key GZ.
Subdistributor, Penetrations
These are not identified according to the originator principle. In breakdown level 1 they are
provided with the code for the building/structure and floor in which they are located.

All rights reserved. The transmission and multiplication of this data is not allowed without the prior permission of the publisher.RAFAKO S. A 47-400 Raciborz 18.01.2012
34

Exceptions are, for example, the subdistributors at the main machine sets and heavy
machinery and the subdistributors in electrical, control and instrumentation cubicles and
cabinets, which in breakdown level 1 are identified according to the main machine set or
heavy machinery, cubicle or cabinet.
In breakdown level 2 the subdistributors are to be identified by the key A1 = G (electro-
technical equipment).
Penetrations through the reactor containment
Such penetrations are identified by JML=reactor containment, cable penetration in break-
down level 1 according to the originator principle.
Connections
Identification of connections is performed in line with DIN 40719 Part 2 in a dedicated code
block separated from the existing code designation by a colon ":" as required and accord-
ing to the originator principle. This code block may contain any combination of alphanu-
meric symbols.
Cable Number
For the classifying part of the cable characteristic the characteristic one of the two cable
goals is used totally or partly, whereby the characteristic of the cable goal is usually used,
which stands further in front in the alphabet.
The numbering part of the cable no. consists of four numerical data characters or of three
numerical and one alphabetical character; grouping according to voltage level, for
example, is allowable.
5.6.2 Electrical Equipment
Transformer Systems for Power Transmission and Auxiliary Power Supply
These transformers are identified on breakdown level 1. In breakdown level 2, the individ-
ual windings are identified (but not on a phase-specific basis) by means of GT for trans-
former equipment and numbered starting on the high-voltage side. For further details see
DIN 42513.
Switchgear, Battery Chargers, Inverters and Battery Sets
These systems and items of equipment are identified regardless of equipment location in
the classifying part of breakdown level 1 in accordance with the rules for main group
F1 = B. If the letters available are insufficient, FN may be used. In such instances the first
character of FN has a classifying purpose. In the second number of FN the fields are
counted over.
5.6.3 Control and Instrumentation Equipment
5.6.3.1 Measuring Circuits
The identification code of the measuring circle covers the recording of measurement,
preparation and distribution as well as the registering and indicating measured variable
processing. Measuring circles are assigned marking-technically to the system, in which the
measured variable is measured.
On breakdown level 2, direct measuring circuits are identified by means of A1 = C, indirect
measuring circuits (linked or calculated) by means of A1 = F and in A2 according to the
measured physical variable (e.g. pressure, temperature) in accordance with DIN 19227
Part 1.

Equipment Unit-Specific Analog Signal Processing and Measuring Circuits

Equipment unit-specific analog signal processing elements comprise control and instru-
mentation equipment which is only provided for one equipment unit such as control inter-
face, protective logics, instruments in the feeder and command termination for final control
elements. These analog signal processing elements receive the code of the equipment unit
concerned.
System-Specific Analog Signal Processing
System-specific analog signal processing elements comprise links between more than one
measuring circuit and/or equipment unit-specific analog signal processing elements for
systems such as open-loop controls (but not control interfaces). They encompass the con-
trol and instrumentation equipment for more than one equipment unit and are identified on
breakdown level 2 by means of A1 = E (analog and binary signal conditioning). A2 identifies
control and instrumentation functions (e.g. alarm links, subgroup control).
System-Interfacing Analog Signal Processing
Where control and instrumentation equipment serves more than one process system iden-
tified in F2 and F3 , the letter Y for generic control and protection systems may be used in
the appropriate data character on breakdown level 1. Control and instrumentation equip-
ment which serves more than one main group may be identified under main group C for
control and instrumentation, e.g. unit control system = CJA.
Process-related systems Generic function key
Code Designation Code Designation
LAB Feedwater piping system Control and protection
system for feedwater
LAC Feedwater pump system LAY
system (common to LAB,
LAD HP feedwater heating system LAC and LAD)
Control and protection
LA. Feedwater system system for steam, water,
LY.
LB. Steam system gas cycle (common to LA.
and LB.)
H.. Conventional heat generation
Unit control system
L.. Steam, water, gas cycle CJA
(common to H.., L. and M..)
M.. Main machine set

Given the possibilities shown in the table, it is not practicable to meet all possible require-
ments for identification of discrete process-related functions (e.g. functional group control).
Thus for example, it may be necessary to use items which are identified differently on
breakdown level 1 (main system and associated parts of auxiliary and ancillary systems) in
order to fulfil a given process-related task (functional group). Identification of the functional
groups involved in process-related tasks so as to relate them to the principal task con-
cerned may be performed by using the alpha characters in F1 F2 F3 of the principal proc-
ess-related task.
In this application, however, a suitable identifier such as a prefixed Y should be used to
indicate that a software coding unit is concerned, thus to rule out confusion with process-
related codes. This code has to be specified between the parties to the project.

36

Analog Signal Linkage

In principle it applies with signal logics that after linkage for e.g. reporting linkages the
characteristic of the signal which can be processed remain keeping as far as possible.
Linked analog signals representing physically similar direct measured variables are identi-
fied by means of a set number, e.g. "9", in the first data character of AN and retain the code
of the physical variable in data character A2 .
Linked analog signals representing physically dissimilar indirect measured variables are
identified by means of A2 = U (combined variables).
Where signals or measured data are used to limit or suppress the original measured data,
the processed output signal retains the code of the original measured data.
Where measured data are corrected (e.g. flow measurement corrected for pressure and
temperature) and if only the corrected measured data are further processed, the codes
stay the same as those of the original measured data in spite of the gating of dissimilar
measured data.
If calculated measured values from linkages of measured value from the origin measured
value are to be differentiated to, then the indirect (calculated) measured variable is to be
marked by A1 = F (indirect measuring circles) in the data code place A1. The identification
in the data code place A2 takes place after physical dimension.
5.6.3.2 Closed-Loop Control Circuits
The principles for the identification of measuring circuits apply analogously to the identifi-
cation of closed-loop control circuits on breakdown level 1. Every control loop and every
closed-loop control circuit comprises measuring, control and positioning elements regard-
less of whether electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic or other items of equipment are used.
Closed-loop controls are identified according to the controlled variable and not after the
measuring circuits which serves the control or the final control element on which the con-
trol acts.
5.6.3.3 Signals and Signal Applications
Breakdown level 3 is used to identify signals and their applications. For this purpose, data
character B1 can contain
X Signal origin
Y Signal application
Z Gated signal
No generally valid rules have been made for signal and application areas. They must be
established individually for different control and instrumentation concepts.
