1. Interview with Lion Ivan
2. Notes from:
 Outgoing Board Members of year
2009/2010

 Notes from incoming President, Vice

President and I.T Director of year
2010/2011

3. Reports
4. Forum Awards!
Before Leo Loshni stepped down as the I.T Director, she
interviewed Lion Ivan to see how Lion Ivan started out in this
world wide organisation.
Loshni: When did you start participating in the Lions or Leo Club?

Lion : I started to participate in Leo in the year 1969 and Lions in the year 1980. I am
now 61 years old and still in the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya.

Loshni: What encouraged you to start doing community service?

Lion : Well, I would have to say persuasion from my friends (like many of us)

Loshni: What’s your most unforgettable experience in the lions club?

Lion : Since I became the advisor for the Leo club of Assunta, there’s been many new
experiences. But what I consider the most unforgettable memories are the girls that
have left a mark and valued impression of themselves as presidents.

Loshni: What is the most interesting project you have done?

Lion : As a Lion, I was serving as President in 1987. The most interesting project
conducted was a screening campaign for Hepatitis B. It was very memorable especially
when our club, Lions Club of Petaling Jaya was featured by the Lions International. We
made the town, as PJ was known back then, the district, the state and the country well
known to the world.

Loshni: What are your hopes for the club and where do you see us 10 years from
now?

Lion : I hope the club will be brought to a higher standard though it will take a small
increment. I will serve the club as long as I can as I like to help people to develop.

Loshni: Thank You.

Lion : 
Jaishree Nagarajan
As the President of 09/10, I had to work very closely with my Lion Advisor, Lion Ivan
Ho. I would like to thank Lion Ivan Ho, who has literally been here since the formation
of the club and before most of us were born, for his undying support and dedication
towards our activities and the club as a whole. He has always encouraged, motivated
and helped us in any means possible for the betterment of our club. Personally
working with him was a great pleasure. I will keep those lessons that I have learnt and
cherish all the memories that I’ve had with you. Lion Ivan, I speak for everyone when
I say this, YOU ARE THE Number 1 Lion Father to all of us! Thank you very much,
Lion! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsoring Lions Club, the
Lions Club of Petaling Jaya for supporting us throughout the fiscal year.

Besides that, I would like to take this golden opportunity to thank my hardworking
board of directors for all their effort throughout the fiscal year. I hope my tenure will
be remembered not overly painful or stressing to my fellow board of directors. With
that, I certainly can’t forget the utmost dedicated members of 09/10 who made every
single project a success! WE make a great team! Thank you members of 09/10!

Not only that, good luck to all the 25 incoming leo’s! You are our clubs hope for the
future! Serve well, learn well and always have fun doing it! Gain all the experience and
leadership skills through various opportunities in LEO! Remember these opportunities
only knock once! So don’t miss it!

Lastly, good luck to the incoming board of directors of the fiscal year 10/11! May you
all have a joyous year ahead. Enjoy every single moment of this experience. Live as
you were to die tomorrow and learn as you were to live forever!

With that, I would like to raise a challenge to all the members of the year 10/11!
Perform to the fullest and to the best to your capabilities and bring home the TOP
CLUB AWARD during the next fiscal year and repeat history like the year 2007/2008!

To begin with, as my youth exchange buddy from Finland would say, “Päivää!” 

Being a Leo has been so rewarding, that this space just doesn’t seem to be enough to express exactly how much.
Since this will be my last note for the Leo Club of Assunta, let me reflect & share with you, how my journey in Leo
started. When I first stepped into Form 3, I had absolutely no intentions of joining the Leo Club, and if it wasn’t for
one of my good friend, I probably would have never been lucky enough to be a part of the Leo family. Until today,
I thank that good friend of mine for bugging the hell out of me to join the Leo Club. “Kamini, you did me a great
favor”

It has undoubtedly been a great pleasure to serve under the name of Leo. Leo has taught me, that failure is the
first step towards success and no matter how many times you fail, “where there is a will, there is always a way” .
If it was not for the Leo Club, I probably would have never stepped into an orphanage or an old folks home, let
alone a spastic or down syndrome home.

My dear Leos,

Never in a million years would I have thought that I would end up becoming the Vice President of our prestigious
Leo Club. I have to admit, that Leo made me a leader. Not any leader, but one who serves sincerely and leads
dynamically. The Leo Club also provided me with many opportunities, from opportunities to organize major
projects when I was only in Form 3, opportunity to host our IU Day & the Musical Charity Concert, to hosting the
great Leo Forum itself. To those of you who are reading this, let me tell you, that these opportunities that I had,
would have been of waste, if I had not grabbed and developed them. So my dear Leos , be pro-active and grab
every opportunity that the Leo Club has to offer, for “Opportunity only knocks once”

Now that I’m no longer a member of the Leo Assunta family, I wish and long to be able to extend my membership
and serve a little longer. That being impossible, I know that I’ll always be a part of this family at heart, as I walk
away with millions of priceless memories. Yes! Things that were once hard to bear, are now sweet to remember.

With that, I would like to extend my best wishes to Grace and her electrifying force. Give it your best shot!

Signing off for real,

Shereen Raj Boniface

ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!!
Karen Kaur
Dearest all,

As all of you are aware, our club’s installation marked the end of the duties for the
Board of Directors 2009/2010. I, Leo Karen Kaur Manocha served as the secretary for
the fiscal year of 2009/2010 and as of now I have completed my tenure. The fiscal
year 2009/2010 had passed so quickly that I felt it was too soon to be over. At a blink
of an eye, I am now resigning.

As the secretary of the club, I hold one of the most crucial jobs in managing the club’s
image and prestige amongst the Leos’ and Lions. It was not an easy task having to
meet deadlines at the last minute and having to stay up all night finishing a proposal.
My task would not have been fulfilled without the help of our dear past President Leo
Jaishree Nagarajan and my buddy, past Vice-President Leo Shereen Raj. Both of them
stood by me through thick and thin and never abandoned me to meet deadlines.

Being a member in the Leo club has certainly opened my mind to so many things that I
was never exposed to as a child; such as the deprived orphans and old folks. Being in
Leo is not just being glamorous by wearing that blue uniform that everyone envies, in
fact, it means much more than that. It carries with it a big responsibility that is to say,
“I am serving the community”.

Although I have now resigned as the secretary of the Leo Club of Assunta Secondary
School, I am still a true Leo at heart. I have faith that my successors will take over my
post with much responsibility and dignity, having to keep the name of our club just
soaring higher and higher. And now for the last time, I am signing of with. . . LEO
ASSUNTA! ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!

God bless and a blessed fiscal year 2010/2011.

Yours in Heartiest Lionism,

Karen Kaur Manocha

Ecclesiastes 3:1; To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (KJV).

Leo has been an exhilarating roller-coaster of ups and downs, literally. Hardly any of us
enjoy the feeling of not having the term Leo in front of our names any more. But as this
verse says, there is a time for everything, and I suppose that time in Leo is over and its time
for us to focus on something different, like SPM. Good things come to an end whether we
want it to or not. Okay I should not spoil the mood and rain down on your parade, especially
since you all have just started your own adventure here! :D To the new BOD’s,
congratulations and good luck as you perform your new responsibilities. I cannot guarantee
that it will be smooth sailing, but nevertheless, its one worth taking because of all the
experiences that will come your way.

I still remember my first ever trip in Leo. Till today, after all the activities I’ve gone for
(excluding camps, that trip was the most memorable one to date). We went to Pure Life
Society and I met a girl. I went there expecting nothing much, in fact I was afraid. I did not
know what to expect, whether I would do something wrong. And I was right; I was a nervous
wreck that day. I’m choosing this above all my experiences in Leo not just because it’s
something that I’ve never shared to anyone, but because I think this would relate to many of
you who are shy. As hard as it is for you to believe, I am shy too :D I can be very noisy, but
extremely quiet. Not a very good combination but hey, Leo has helped me improve in so
many ways. For one thing, I loathed, not loved, speaking in public. I am happy to say that I
don’t get as tongue twisted as I did before :) (My skills are far from Jaishree’s or Shereen’s
but it’s getting there :D). So to you Leos who do have anxieties and worries about things like
these, I’m telling you now that it’s okay! It is very normal and natural to be scared. I get
scared too still from time to time. But if you want to make a change, the only way for Leo to
help is if YOU yourself take that step to make a difference.

My last words are well... Quoted from Lilo and Stitch, “Ohana means family, family
means nobody gets left behind”. Treat each other like family, and always stay close. To all
those that I may have offended, I am truly sorry. People make mistakes, and I do too.
Sometimes when we get too excited, we say things that we don’t mean. Anyway, I am
making a nuisance of myself with this message. All the best to you guys from here on! We
old folks will still be lurking around school if you wish to contact us :)

Hello Leos.

Have you been enjoying yourself in this club so far? If you're a shy person, it's the
right time to get out of your shell now! Don't limit yourself to all the possibilities
because you're shy to make new friends. Think of all the fun you'll miss!
Remember; never hesitate to grab any opportunities to develop yourself.
Yes, I'm repeating this again: approach your B.O.D and start organizing projects!
Participating in projects and organizing it yourself is a different story.
There's nothing to fear, the opportunity is right there waiting;
waiting for you to learn and experience things that you've never done before. The
club can't possibly achieve anything without the members' support,
so do take part in the activities and always ask if you could be any help in any way.

Yes, just take part in as many activities as you can. Support your Organizing
Chairperson, support your committee and support your club! Remember, when you're
leaving this club later, leave with lots of memories, don't leave with any regrets
because you haven't been active enough to take part in anything in the club.

P/S I'm installed as a PJI member recently. Say hi if you see me around ok? =D

Heya Leos,

Wow, It’s amazing how time flies…This has been a great year!! Thanks to those
who have helped me. Thank you so much!

Leo has contributed much more than fun to my life. I’m definitely going to miss all
those crazy moments I had in Leo. If I have done anything wrong, I sent out my
deepest apologies to all.

Finally, thanks to Danielle, Jaishree and Li Lian for being so patient with me and
keeping up with all my last minutes and to Shereen for being my ride home after
every Leo project!

And to all the other BOD members of 09/10, had a great time working with all of
you! Have fun being a LEO and keep the LEO spirit soaring high up!

Hey fellow Leos,

It’s time for me to say goodbye *sobbing*. I’m really glad to join Leo throughout
my high school life. I did not regret joining the Leo Club at all. I am very happy
and proud to be a Leo member. I gained a lot of experiences and opportunities
throughout the whole fiscal year. The best experience I had is the Youth Exchange
Programme. I was lucky and fortunate to have the opportunity to go to Japan. It
was a great experience. I got to learn more about the Japanese culture and their
lifestyles.

Besides that, I made many friends than I expected since I became a Leo member.
We often shared our tears and joys together. Besides the YE Programme, I also
got the opportunity to take part in the Leo Leadership Camp. It was really fun
being at the camp. I went there twice *laughing*. Before I end, I would like to
have this opportunity to thank the teacher advisors, Lion Ivan and my fellow Board
Of Directors 09/10. Thanks for all your guidance and advice. I has been a
meaningful journey for me.

To the incoming/future Leos & the BOD of 10/11:

All the best in your fiscal year. I hope all of you will gain more experiences. Do not
ever miss your opportunity or else you will REGRET IT! Being a Leo member is
super fun and awesome.

ONCE A LEO,FOREVER A LEO !! ROAR ROAR ROAR.

Jeyanthi Kulasegaran

Yo Leos,

Hey, thanks a lot for letting me pen a few words. Firstly, I am not much of a
writer. Therefore, I am just going to keep it short and hopefully sweet.

My years in Leo have changed me for the better. I see things differently now.
Before joining the Leo Club, I DIDN’T like visiting homes or even being around
children. However, I wouldn’t mind it now as it was kind of fun. The outings that
we had in my opinion, is actually to promote communication and fellowship among
the members. But the most important thing is to help the community while we
organize such projects.

All I want to say now is just have fun. The Leo Club is a fun club and at the same
time we serve the community.

Oh and Leos, DON’T JUST KEEP ON ROARING; DO ROCK ON AS WELL ;)

Roars Away;

Jeyanthi

L.E.O. – Leadership, experience, opportunity says it all.

Without a doubt, being a Leo has definitely sharpened my leadership skills. I was
assigned to organize two of the most important events in our club, our installation
and international understanding day.

Leading the team through successful events like that was one of the finest
experiences anyone could have. Being a Leo has indeed provided me with
experiences I’ve never gained. Besides that, Leo has provided me with the
opportunity to know great friends.

I’ll definitely miss attending Leo events with other members. It feels weird not
having the title “Leo” in front of my name anymore but I shall remain a true Leo
deep down in my heart.

However, all of these would never happen if you are not active in the club. So I
urge all the incoming Leo members to be active and participate in all the Leo
activities. Then, you’ll be able to feel what it is like to be a true Leo.

With this, I wish the club success in all its future undertakings.

Roar roar roar!!!

I hope Leo of Assunta Secondary School will live on with its legacy to
provide aid to anyone who needs it.

I may not be a Leo member anymore, but I will sure have the Leo spirit in
me. I give my best wishes to the new and future Leos of Assunta Secondary
School.

I have gain many gifts from Leo. The gift of caring and loving; leadership,
experience and not forgetting, opportunity. I hope that the Leo Club will
have a green lifestyle to improve our future.

I know with great will that Leo is capable to accomplish anything.

Hey guys!

Let me begin by saying congratulations to Leo Bue Lim for getting this
post. If anyone deserved this position, Leo Bue did. In fact, throughout
the whole fiscal year of 2009/2010 it was Bue that helped me with a lot of
blogging stuff. So, thank you Bue and all the best next year!

Now, I would like to share with you a bit about being the IT Director of
the club. Well, it is a lot of work. However, by being in the board of
directors, it has exposed me to endless new experiences. It has thought
me how important each individual is in a group and the true value of
being part of a team.

As the saying goes, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and the
same theory applies to our club. I also gained a lot of
knowledge...especially about computers.

Thus, I hope Bue will keep up the good work and be as creative as
possible with the newsletters and blog and board. As for me, I will try to
do my best as the next treasurer of the club! Good Luck once again!

Roaring out,
Leo Loshni
Grace Keow
Hey Leos!!!

Here’s Leo Grace... your one and only extremely tall president for the fiscal
year 2010/2011.

past month. It has been great getting to know everyone. Hidden talents are
also being discovered amongst us Leos.

definitely gain many unforgettable and memorable experiences along the way.
Do come for projects organized and organize projects too. It will definitely be
fun, Fun, FUN!!!

Hey all you Leo’s out there!!

Well here is the Vice President’s note. I can’t believe I am writing this. I still
remember my first day in the interview room when I was accepted as a Leo in
year 2009. Then, I got nominated for a post but I failed to get it. But that never
make me give up and look at me now a year later, VICE PRESIDENT! I am so glad
becoming the Vice President of the Leo Club of Assunta. I would like to thank
everyone who voted for me.

Also, a big THANK YOU to the outgoing Leo’s for your support. A special thank to
Shereen Raj as she has guided me to serve in the right direction and being there
when I need it. And congratulations to everyone who made it as a Leo and also all
board members! And to Grace Keow, I can’t wait to work with you!

I hope this fiscal year 10/11 will be an exciting and most wonderful one of all for
all of us. Let’s work together in bringing up our club’s reputation. Without team
work, we cannot achieve this very important mission of ours. I hope each and
every one of you will give your biggest support and helping hand towards this
club.

Let’s keep the Leo spirit high!

Aloha Leos!

Firstly, welcome to the fiscal year of 10/11 of the Leo Club of Assunta
Secondary School! It’s going to be a really great year ahead for all of us.

To the seniors, thank you for bringing this club to where it is right now.
You have definitely made an impact on us and shape us to the Leos we
are today. I would also like to give a huge thank you to Leo Loshni for
guiding me throughout the whole time ever since I got nominated for
this post. Without her, this newsletter wouldn’t be completed.

To the new board of directors, it will to be FUN working with you guys! I
really cannot wait to find out what the future holds for us.

I’d also like to wish all the best to Leo Grace and Leo Saliza to bring this
club to greater heights! And to you; fellow Leos who make the club what
it is today, let’s give all our best and play our parts as a Leo Club
member! ROAR!

37th Multiple District 308 Leo Forum 2010
On the 11th to 13th of June 2010, some students from the Leo Club of Assunta
Secondary School attended the 37th Multiple District 308 Leo Forum. The Leo Forum was
held in Tower Regency Hotel, Ipoh. The theme for the Leo Forum 2010 was Zealous Energy
Augments Leadership (Z.E.A.L). Many Leo clubs from all around Malaysia attended this Leo
Forum as it is only held once a year every year. Leo clubs from Singapore and Brunei had
also attended this Leo Forum. This year’s Leo Forum was organized by Leo Michelle Wu
from Leo Club of Subang Utama. Eighteen Leo’s from Assunta had attended this joyful
event.

On the 11th of June 2010 which fell on a Friday, the Leo’s from all around Malaysia,
Brunei and Singapore arrived in Tower Regency Hotel, Ipoh at around 10.00 am. There
were also some clubs arrived earlier than expected, which was around 8am as they came
from a state further away. At 11.00 am registration and the fiesta booths were opened.
Many schools had their own booth, publicising their club. The booths sold many items,
such as badges, t-shirts, environmentally friendly bottles, accessories and many more.
After lunch, at 1.00 pm, the presentation of Merit Awards for both district 308B2 and
district 308B1 were presented by Lion Alan, the Chief Advisor of this year’s forum.

After the fiesta and the presentation of awards, everyone headed back to their rooms
to prepare themselves for the fellowship night later on. The fellowship night started at
8.30 pm. The theme for that night was Poertez Un Chapeau and everyone had to have a
hat as a dress code for that night. During the fellowship night, the Leo Idol grand finals
were performed by the finalist. There were three finalists and all from different regions.
The emcee’s that night were hilarious as they know how to seriously crack a joke! The
fellowship night ended at 11.30pm. Everyone had tons of fun that night.

On the second day of forum, breakfast was served at 7.30 am. After breakfast,
everyone headed to the Grand Ballroom for the Opening Ceremony. During the opening
ceremony, every club cheered their own club’s roll calls. There was also a performance by
Leo’s from three different schools. One from our very own Assunta Secondary School, SMK
Sultan Abdul Samad and also SMK Seafield. The opening ceremony and also the closing
ceremony, which was held the next day, were organized by Leo Jaishree from Assunta
too!!The emcees for the Opening and Closing Ceremony were Leo Shereen Raj and Leo
Vincent Teoh. The Opening Ceremony ended at 10.30 am. Immediately after that, there
was a forum theme talk.
After lunch, there was the outstanding awards presentation. For District 308B1, the
presentation was held in the Grand Ballroom whereas for 308B2 was held in a conference
room in Level 6 of the hotel. We were so happy that our club from Assunta managed to get
many outstanding awards. Our very own President, Leo Jaishree received an Outstanding
Award. After that, everyone were dismissed back to their room. At 7.30 pm, there was a bus
that took all Leo’s to a restaurant called “D’Florex”. The banquet night was held there and the
theme was “Oscar’s Night”. During this banquet night, the top awards were presented.
Unfortunately, Assunta did not manage to receive any top awards that night. But we still had
tons of fun, meeting new Leo’s from around Malaysia. There were many different
performances which amazed all of us that night. The banquet night ended at 11.30 pm and
we were all exhausted.

The last day of forum started off with a meeting chaired by Lion Alan for the incoming key
officers of all clubs. In this meeting, he mentioned that it is very important to help those who
are in need and not to always go to the orphanage or old folk’s home which are already fully
equipped. Instead, help those who really need it. He also mentioned to think out of the box
and come out with interesting and more creative projects that will attract attention and
probably help us win an award the following year. The meeting ended at 10.00 am and
immediately after that the closing ceremony was held in the Grand Ballroom. The
performance during the closing ceremony was an indeed touching performance as it
reminded the Leo’s that were having fun these pass three days to think about those who are
suffering in other countries with poverty and many other issues. Everyone loved the
performance. After the ceremony, everyone checked out from their room’s and started
saying farewell to all the new friends found within those three days.

The Leo Forum was indeed a blast. Everyone had fun and would definitely want to come
next year. Although we did not win any top awards, we sure did win many outstanding and
also merit awards. We left the hotel with an amount of 20 awards. We would definitely not
give up and try harder to win much more than that and definitely try to get the Top Club
award next year. We hope that next year’s forum would be as fun as this year’s. Thank you.

Cupcake Time
On the 6th of July 2010, in conjunction with the Open Day of SMK Assunta, the Leo Club
of Assunta Secondary School organized a fundraising project, ‘Cupcake Time!’. Our target
was to raise a total of RM350 and we managed to achieve our goal. The objective of this
project is to raise funds for our school service projects.

We set up the stall by the hall at approximately 9.15am. We sold varieties of cupcakes
and muffins. Our Leo members were ever willing to lend a hand and we baked all the items
we sold. It was definitely 100% homemade. The Leos who were involved took 1 hour shifts.
At about 9.30am, parents started to come and there were some parents who bought the
cupcakes and muffins without hesitating because they knew it is for a good cause. There
were also many students who bought the cupcakes.

At around 10.30am, we sold at least half of our items. More parents came and they were
very interested in the creativity of students and what we would do for our school. There
were also parents who bought a minimum of 15 packets of muffins and cupcakes.

By 11.15 am, we sold all the cupcakes and muffins. We worked together to clean up the
area and to pack everything up. We managed to raise RM 400 and we were very glad that all
our hard work had paid off.

This project was definitely a success and we are looking forward for more opportunities
to help our school in anything we can. It was a job well done and we went home with a smile
on our face.

A friendly meet
On the 14th of July 2010, a group of us from the Leo Club of SMK (P) Assunta attended a
“Friendly Meeting” held by the Leo Club of SMK (P) Taman Petaling at their school. We
were honored to accept their invitation to us, giving us a chance to interact with our Sister
Club.

We reached SMK (P) Taman Petaling around 2.p.m and were greeted at the gate by a
welcoming team. They escorted us to a class room where the meeting was designated.
While waiting for the rest to arrive, we had a time of casual conversation with them. At
2.15 p.m, we stared the meeting with a short speech from the in-coming President and
Vice President of the Leo Club of SMK (P) Taman Petaling, thanking us for our presence.
Then there were the roll calls from both Leo Club of SMK (P) Assunta and SMK (P) Taman
Petaling. After the pledge, we introduced ourselves before starting the games as a warm
up session.

We had a time of fun together with some games. The choices of games that were played,
allowed us to get to know the names of our new friends. Prizes were also given away to the
winning groups. We were then led to the canteen where refreshments were provided for
us. We had jellies, sausages, sandwiches and carbonated drinks. Before the meeting
dismiss a group photo taken.

Lastly, we had a great time of interaction with our Sister Club and had the chance to get
to know them more. We finally arrived back at our school around 4.p.m.

Leos and Lions Olympic Day
On the 18th of July, members of The Leo Club of Assunta attended The Leo and Lions
Olympic Day. This event was held at the 3K Stadium in Subang Jaya and it was organized by
the Leo Club of US J8, Leo club of La Salle PJ, Leo Club of Assunta and Leo Club of Subang
Utama. Leos of Assunta came in green T-shirts while the others were wearing their
respective club t-shirts. Everyone was geared up and wearing their sports attire, ready for
the events to begin.

The event started at 8.30am with the opening ceremony. The ceremony started with the
roll call of the clubs, Leo Pledge, speech by the organizing chairperson, Leo Chin Kar Yern
and the officiation by the Lion representatives.

After that, the first event to start off the day was the 100m sprint, boys and girls. Then, it
was the 4x100 boys and girls. At 9.15am, the 3 legged race event starting. Everyone was
cheering for their respective teams as it was definitely not an easy race.

Next, the Frisbee tournament was held. Six clubs participated in this event. All the
participants were having a lot of fun and the lunch break started at 11.30 am. At 12.00pm,
the futsal matches began. Half way through the event, it started to rain heavily.
Unfortunately, we had to wait quite some time for the rain to stop before proceeding with
all the matches.

To make up for lost time, the tug-o-war competition was carried out while the futsal
matches were also going on. Every team used all the energy they had to pull the ropes.
Good team efforts were portrayed through this event.

All the events ended at about 2.45pm, and Lion Nicholas Seow presented the medals and
trophies to the winning participants and teams. Our club managed to come home with a
medal for the 3 legged race. We were all exhausted after spending a day in the hot sun.
However, we did enjoy ourselves very much and we got to know many new people.
