CHE 317- Computer Packages for Chemical Engineers (prepared by OSUNKOYA O.A) Lecture 1 7
Introduction to CHE 317
During the last two decades computer performance
has steeply increased, while their prices have steeply
gone down. Very powerful personal computers have
emerged at very low prices.
Very powerful general purpose software have evolved
for various applications, such as
MathCAD, MATLAB, SPSS, Femlab, Polymath,
HYSYS , PRO II
database, word processor, worksheets
incredible number of many other powerful software
tools.

CHE 317- Computer Packages for Chemical Engineers (prepared by OSUNKOYA O.A) Lecture 1 8
Introduction (Contd)
In the chemical engineering area, several high quality
specialized software have evolved such as the HYSYS
process flow sheeting program and the Control
Station.
The available computing tools have led to large
changes in the industrial world. In contrast, the
typical engineering educator has been slow to
incorporate computer-based concepts in the
curriculum and training methods

CHE 317- Computer Packages for Chemical Engineers (prepared by OSUNKOYA O.A) Lecture 1 9
Quizzes and Examinations
Unannounced short quizzes will be given (generally
once each week) to reinforce important principles
and to encourage preparation for class.
Quizzes will not be able to be made up without an
official university/medical excuse.
Quizzes will generally be given at the beginning of the
class hour. If you arrive late, do not expect to receive
additional time.

CHE 317- Computer Packages for Chemical Engineers (prepared by OSUNKOYA O.A) Lecture 1 10
Method of Grading
The final course grade will be weighted according to
the following scheme:
Assignments 7.5%
Quizzes 7.5%
Mid Semester 15%
Semester Exam 70%
