HS GIRLS BASKETBALL
Diamond Bragg, Sheridan Reid
lead Lions to Bermudian title
Camp Hill produced a decisive championship vic-
tory at the Bermudian Springs Holiday Tournament,
blasting Greenwood 65-19 Wednesday night. MVP
Diamond Bragg scored 21 points and added seven re-
bounds, eight steals and seven assists, and Sheridan Reid
celebrated her 16th birthday in style by also making the
all-tourney team for the Lions.
Boiling Springs beat host Bermudian 40-25 in the
consolation of that tourney, with Lizzy Tilton scored
12 of her game-high 16 points in the first half for the
Bubblers. Julia Fulton and Melanie Barber added nine
points each to the cause.
Trinity won a pair of games at the one-day Kutz-
town varsity holiday event, beating Daniel Boone 49-42
and Kutztown 54-33. Ashley Dean (18 points) and Becca
Mott (10 points, 11 rebounds) led the way against the
Blazers, with Dean again scoring 18 and Mott tallying
14 against the hosts.
Red Land earned a split in the same Kutztown event,
beating Brandywine Heights 43-37 and losing to Daniel
Boone 49-44. In the victory over the Bullets, Lindsay
Cramer scored 12 points, earning 16 trips to the free-
throw line, and Katie Kosovac tallied 10 for the Patriots.
Cramer also led with 10 points against the Blazers.
Mechanicsburg spread it around in a 48-34 victory
over host Reading in the consolation of the Red Knights
holiday tourney. Rylee Everett led with 19 points, though
10 different Wildcats scored at least one field. Maya Gel-
nett scored five of her seven in the first quarter to help
Mechanicsburg get started.
HS BOYS BASKETBALL
Mitch Henry knocked down three more 3-pointers
en route to 15 points, but East Pennsboro couldnt keep
up with Northeastern in a 62-43 championship game
loss in the East Pennsboro Holiday Tournament. The
Bobcats got 17 points from Fred Mulbah and 16 from
Nate Wilson (including four treys) while jumping out
to a 36-21 halftime lead.
Ryan McGill and Northern seized control en route to
a 67-52 victory over Susquehannock in the consolation of
the Middletown tournament. McGill scored 12 of his game-
high 19 points in the first half, while Scott Leitholf added 14
for the Polar Bears. Dominik Topper scored all nine of his
points after halftime to keep Northern in control.
Grey Hess and Matt Sunderland scored 15 points
each, but Cumberland Valley dropped its second straight
game in the Peter Sauer Memorial Tournament at Shady
Side Academy. The Eagles wrap up against Seneca Valley
on Thursday afternoon.
HS SWIMMING
Cedar Cliff and Red Land struggled as Dallastowns
boys and girls teams rolled to wins in the Dallastown In-
vitational on Wednesday afternoon. Neither local team
picked up a win in any event, but the Colts girls got third-
place finishes from Ava Arnold in the 200 IM (2:23.54) and
Lily Markley in the 100 back (1:06.15). The Patriots picked
up a third in the boys 200 free relay (1:38.12).
LOCAL COLLEGE
Shippensburg mens basketball is up to No. 18 in the
National Association of Basketball Coaches Poll thanks
to the Raiders school-record 9-0 start. This ties the
highest national ranking in school history. Ship was No.
18 for two consecutive weeks in 2006. The Raiders will
put that perfect record on the line against No. 13 Kutz-
town in a road game Friday.

52.26 shattering the pre-
vious record of 53.35 set by
Dovers Eric Naylor in 2007.
It felt really smooth,
Chenot said. The McDe-
vitt kid (Jonathan Mata)
was right beside me and he
had a good swim. It was a
good race.
And thats not all. Che-
not claimed third in the
200 free with a time of
1:48.91, second in the 200
free relay and first with his
team in the 400 free relay
to end the day.
I think we did all-
around pretty well, Che-
not said. I think we swam
pretty well. The guys were
definitely coming along
pretty well.
Isaiah Bell claimed first
in the 50 free with a time
of 22.72 and second in the
100 free, while also claim-
ing second with his team in
the 200 free relay.
Big Spring
overcomes illness
To say the Bulldogs were
not at full strength would
be an understatement.
Big Spring entered its
annual home invitational
battling an illness that
swept through the roster.
But it wasnt a complete
disaster.
A third-place finish
awaited the boys at the
end of the day with a to-
M tal of 165.5, while the girls
1 finished eighth with 75,

was positive about the out-
come.
We have seven or eight
swimmers, like everybody
else, battling the bug thats
going around, Stover said.
We made some adjust-
ments to our relays, but Im
pleased with the individual
performances for some of
our kids and those kids that
are just coming back from
being sick, just that fact
that they were here and put
in the time and the effort,
kudos to them.
So, successful venture?
Yes, I think so.
Jarod Anderson once
again put up strong times
with a first-place finish
in the 200 breaststroke
(1:00.95) and third in the
100 fly (55.11).
As for the event itself,
which is always one of the
biggest for Big Spring of
any sport, Stover believes
that was a success, as well.
It was great compe-
tition this time of year
for the teams coming in,
Stover said. We typically
draw about 400 swim-
mers to this meet and we
were about right on that
this year. Minus those who
were out sick and battling
sickness, of course.

place tie with Carlisles Ca-
leb Padgett (1:57.42) in the
200 free. Quinton Egger

NHL quickly

Zach Werenski and Ivan Pro-
vorov are the latest to put cracks
in the time-tested theory that
defensemen need a long time
to develop.
The 19-year-old rookies
quickly followed the lead of
Seth Jones and 2015 Calder
Trophy winner Aaron Ekblad
in adapting more quickly to the
NHL than elite defensemen of
previous generations. Werenski
plays on the Columbus Blue
Jackets top pairing alongside
Jones and Provorov is already a
No. 1 defenseman after making
the Philadelphia Flyers out of
training camp.
In that position of defense,
its the toughest to play and a lot
is expected of them to step right
into the top level of their game in
their sport, Blue Jackets coach
John Tortorella said. Werenski
has a mental aptitude about
him that he can handle a lot of
things not only physically but
more importantly mentally. Its
really impressive to see such a
young man be able to do that.
Werenski and Provorov are in
the Calder race for the top NHL
rookie with forwards Auston
Matthews and Patrik Laine, while
Jakob Chychrun of the Arizona
Coyotes is handling the NHL
well at 18. Twenty-somethings
like Rasmus Ristolainen of the
Buffalo Sabres, Colton Parayko of
the St. Louis Blues, John Kling-
berg of the Dallas Stars, Morgan
Rielly of the Toronto Maple Leafs
and Provorov teammate Shayne
Gostisbehere also didnt need
much time to adjust to the North
American pro game.
Youre seeing a lot more
young defensemen put in big-
ger roles, Jones said. Teams
and organizations are going to
be putting them (in) earlier so
that they can see for themselves
what it feels like at a young age
so that when they do kind of
develop, itll go a little quicker.
Some of it is the necessity of
the salary cap and the trend to-
ward teams leaning on younger,
cheaper players. But the best of
the best defensemen are now
much more like the prodigious
Drew Doughty, who was a major
contributor for the Los Angeles
Kings as a rookie, than Victor
Hedman, who needed a few
years to develop into the star he
is today.
I think its opportunity more
than anything, said Ryan Ellis
of the Nashville Predators, who
played with Jones for his first
two-plus seasons. When youre
given the opportunity, youre
going to make mistakes, youre
going to turn over the puck or do
this, do that. Its the opportu-
nity, and if you keep getting that
opportunity eventually youre
going to be more experienced
and have more confidence.
The Flyers gave Gostisbehere
an opportunity last season af-
ter a long-term injury to vet-
eran Mark Streit, and Provorov
earned it this fall with his play.
While a lot of young defensemen
are further ahead offensively
than defensively, Provorov has
earned matchups against Con-
nor McDavid, Tyler Seguin and
other top scorers and lived up to
those lofty expectations.
His consistency has prob-
ably been one element thats
taken a nice step forward,
coach Dave Hakstol said. The
bulk of (the credit) goes to Ivan
and his mental readiness and
physical readiness maybe being
able to play regardless of what
the era is.

Steve Smith likely to retire

Smith sounds like a man whos
ready to close the door on an NFL
career that has spanned 16 seasons
and taken him well beyond his 37th
birthday.
Whether you want to or not,
youve got to move on, Smith said
Wednesday. Its part of life. The
world still turns.
The five-time Pro Bowl receiver
will play in his 230th NFL game
Sunday when the Baltimore Ra-
vens finish the season against the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Standing in front of the media
wearing a Darth Vader costume,
Smith said hes about 89 percent
sure it will mark the end of his
stellar career.
He used that number because he
wears No. 89.
Though Smith spoke with deep
emotion during his 10-minute ses-
sion, he did not formally announce
his retirement. He already did that
once before, prior to the 2015 sea-
son, but ended up changing his
mind after tearing his Achilles ten-
don in Week 7.
This time, when asked about his
future beyond Sunday, Smith said,
Football has given me more than I
probably can give football back. For
2016-17 and beyond, its probably
my last game.
Probably? Pressed for something
more definitive, Smith said, Just
let it be, bro.
A minute later, Smith told of
a symbolic message he received
during practice.
Today was pretty emotional
out on the field, he said. It was a
windy, and parts of the field were
frozen. The sun was shining. It was
confirmation today. God winked at
me.
Smith broke into the league in
2001 with Carolina and played with
the Panthers for 13 seasons before
coming to Baltimore in 2014.
A feisty, fierce competitor with
a drive to win unmatched by few
in the league, Smith has a knack
for drawing praise from his team-
mates and ire from those who go up
against him.
Carolina quarterback Cam New-
ton said Wednesday: Theres not a

season. He was on the practice
squad before being promoted on
Dec. 13.

great sort of a first, jump-cut
type move that is very elusive,
and you see it in practice when

Marshall was recruited out
of high school by former Eagles
coach Chip Kelly, who was 46-7
at Oregon from 2009-12. He
played two seasons as a running
back, including his freshman
year under Kelly. Then Oregon
coach Mark Helfrich turned the
5-foot-10 inch Marshall into a
receiver his junior year.
I had to learn how to play it
or dont play, Marshall said. I there and getting a win.

but it was a blessing in disguise,

Marshall became the first
player in Pac-12 history to ac-
cumulate 1,000 yards rushing
and receiving in his career.

Kelly developed a reputation
in Philadelphia for not being a
player-friendly coach and man-
agement criticized his commu-
nication skills.
Chip is from New Hamp-
shire. He acts like hes from New
Hampshire. Hes cut from the guy, or be a $2 or $3 million a year

and you either love it or hate it
and hes OK with that, Marshall
said.
Hes not too much of a peo-
ple person and if he likes you, he
really likes you and if he doesnt,
I dont think he shows that he
hates you. Its business and

Kelly is 2-12 in his first season
with San Francisco and theres
speculation he might get fired
or choose to return to college
after two consecutive losing
seasons in the NFL.
Chip is as much a competi-
tor as anybody and Im sure he
wants to make it work and win,
Marshall said. I wish the best
for him.

done once in four years, and even

He started at Heinz Field against
the Browns in November 2015, only
to leave in the first quarter with an
ankle injury. Roethlisberger, held
out with a sprained foot, came on
in relief and threw for 379 yards in
a 30-9 win .
There wont be a safety net this
time around with Roethlisberger
inactive. Only the shot to prove
what Jones can do. And Jones isnt
the only one that knows it.
Landry has the opportunity to
go out and the way backup quar-
terbacks are being paid, hes a free
agent next year, theres no telling
whether hes a $4 or $5 million a year
backup, guard Ramon Foster said.
Theres a lot for him on the line.
Jones played solidly if not spec-
tacularly in his one start this sea-
son, completing 29 of 47 passes for
281 yards with a touchdown and an
interception in a 27-16 loss to New
England on Oct. 23 while Roeth-
lisberger recovered from left knee
surgery. The Steelers rallied from
an early 14-0 deficit to pull within
a point in the third quarter before
fading.
Of course, Jones had LeVeon Bell
and Antonio Brown at his disposal
then. Like Roethlisberger, coach
Mike Tomlin plans not to use those
two against the Browns. Maybe its
fitting. Jones has spent the majority
of his time with the Steelers working
with the second string or the scout
team, which made him plenty fa-
miliar with role players such as wide
Ayers. Both made significant con-
tributions late in last weeks divi-
sion-clinching victory over Balti-

if nothing develops.
I dont want to see him stroking
the ball, Foster said with a laugh.
Jones doesnt want to get too
wrapped up in his future prospects,
though Bell believes Jones could
potentially be in the mix to start
somewhere else down the road.
Given Pittsburghs investment
in his development, the Steelers
could also offer Jones a chance to
stick around and continue to be a
competent backup behind Roeth-
lisberger.
The former Oklahoma star who
became a father for the first time
last spring hasnt gotten that far
down the road. Better to just focus
on Sunday and save whats next for
later.
We have a great opportunity in
this business to make a good living
for our family, he said. You get
those type of opportunities, you
want to capitalize on it.
