Marjorie Thompson and Joe Hoff have a lot in com-

mon: both are 84 years old; both operated dairy farms
in their younger days; both lost their spouses recently
Joe lost his wife Norma seven years ago, and Marj lost
her husband Duane six years ago; both are very active
members of the Ashby Senior Citizens Club, and spend
hours making loom rugs for sale to help finance the senior
center; and both were named Outstanding Senior Citizens
from Grant County and will represent Grant County at
the upcoming State Fair.
Joe has been in the military, a dairy farmer, field
man for the NFO, and a milk inspector. After moving
to Ashby following retirement, he became active in the
Senior Citizens and the town itself. Seeing its Memorial
Park going to waste, Joe spearheaded a drive to raise
money and fix it up. He built and installed a horseshoe
court in the park, and is active with a group of pitchers
every Monday evening.
Joe is also the official weaver for the rugs the center
sells at local summer festivals and craft fairs. This past
winter he built up an inventory of 100 rugs and has been
selling them all summer.
It helps to keep the lights and heat on in the senior
center during the winter, he said. He enjoys playing Marjorie Thompson and Joe Hoff with rugs for sale at the Ashby Senior Center.
