Objective(s): To identify various automotive systems & subsystems
To explain working & construction of various automotive systems
& subsystems.
To introduce students to engine auxiliary systems like heating, ventilation and
air-conditioning.

1. Introduction - Introduction of automobile, classification of automobile, parts of an [4]


automobile, performance of automobile, tractive efforts.
Chassis - Introduction, classification of chassis, frame types & nomenclature of car body.
2. Fuel Supply, Lubrication and Cooling System - Fuel feed system in spark ignition engine, [10]
types, gravity & pump feed system, layout of spark ignition engine fuel pump system, function
of each component.
Fuel supply system in compression ignition engine, layout, components, function, types,
working & line diagram of common rail, individual pump system, fuel injectors, single orifice,
multiple orifices.
Engine friction, lubrication system, areas of heat flow in engines, temperature distribution and
temperature profiles, cooling air and water requirements, cooling systems.
