Foreword
This document gives the overview of the IMS domain which
is defined in Release 5 according to the 3GPP standard.
Moreover, there will be a basic presentation regarding the
IMS network architecture and layering, services, charging
processes , as well as the IMS solution developed by
HUAWEI.

Carriers required the new generation of telecommunications core network.

OTT: over the top. OTT services run on top of the Internet and can compete with the
telecommunications services of carriers. Google and Skype are companies that provide
OTT services.

Problems and Challenges Encountered
by Carriers (Cont.)

How to compete with OTT?

What kind of services can be provided over national broadband and Metro optical

networks? How to prevent the telecommunications carriers to act as only

telecommunications channel providers?

How to allow a subscriber to make calls, chat with other subscribers, share data

with other subscribers, and make video communications with other subscribers

using a computer or a soft terminal? How to bind MSs to fixed phones and soft

terminals of PCs?

The IMS, as a new-generation core network, provides

carriers with service capabilities to compete with the OTT.

What is IMS?
IMS is IP Multimedia Subsystem
Based on IP bear network
Uses SIP protocol as core session control protocol
Supports access-independent and thus provide more competitive service packages

History of the IMS
The architecture and functions of the IMS have been optimized
from 3GPP release 5 to 3GPP release 9.

The IMS was introduced and the initial IMS architecture was
developed in release 5.
3GPP release 6 and release 7 added interworking with other
networks, namely, conferences, instant messaging, presence, PoC,
and added support for fixed bandwidth and WiFi.
3GPP release 8 and release 9 provided service continuity and
consistency, and added support for LTE (IMS-based VoLTE) and
SR-VCC.

TISPAN, ITU-T, and 3GPP2 also work out IMS standards. To

ensure the consistency between these IMS standards, these
standard organizations develop a common IMS standard system.

Conclusion on the IMS History
It has been recognized by main standard organizations that the
IMS will converge mobile and fixed networks in the future.

IMS standards are already stable and mature. Future

standardization of the IMS will concentrate on how to optimize and
enhance a few functions.
All mainstream vendors can provide IMS products that comply
with 3GPP and can provide end-to-end product integration
capabilities.

Reconstruction
Currently, network carriers face the
following problems: decrease in the
number of fixed-line subscribers; the high
OPEX of new and old switches; the full
service strategy transformation in the
telecommunications industry. Huawei
PSTN network reconstruction solution can
solve the preceding problems.

The solution supports the following

access modes:
AGCF access for POTS and V5

MGCF access for PBX subscribers

SBC access for IMS broadband

Why the IMS Network Was Developed
The 3GPP and TISPAN aim to converge the current telecommunication
network and the Internet and hopes to achieve the following purposes:

Solve the following operation problems encountered by the

telecommunication services in the IP network:

Slow growth of telecommunication users and decrease of revenues

Slow service update and difficulty in deploying new services

QoS, security, charging, and network interworking

Achieve FMC

With the trend of network bandwidth and IP-based network, IMS can better support convergent
application. The rich IMS multimedia application has been an important edge for carriers to
compete for the market, for example, multimedia telephone, RCS, and Centrex services.
