What is IMS?
IMS is IP Multimedia Subsystem
Based on IP bear network
Uses SIP protocol as core session control protocol
Supports access-independent and thus provide more competitive service packages

History of the IMS
The architecture and functions of the IMS have been optimized
from 3GPP release 5 to 3GPP release 9.
The IMS was introduced and the initial IMS architecture was
developed in release 5.
3GPP release 6 and release 7 added interworking with other
networks, namely, conferences, instant messaging, presence, PoC,
and added support for fixed bandwidth and WiFi.
3GPP release 8 and release 9 provided service continuity and
consistency, and added support for LTE (IMS-based VoLTE) and
SR-VCC.

Overview of the IMS Access Solution
The IMS network does not rely on the access network of a
specific type.
Fixed and mobile terminals can share the IMS network and
service experiences provided by ASs. The IMS network enables
fixed-mobile convergence (FMC).

Reconstruction
Currently, network carriers face the
following problems: decrease in the
number of fixed-line subscribers; the high
OPEX of new and old switches; the full
service strategy transformation in the
telecommunications industry. Huawei
PSTN network reconstruction solution can
solve the preceding problems.

Why the IMS Network Was Developed
The 3GPP and TISPAN aim to converge the current telecommunication
network and the Internet and hopes to achieve the following purposes:
Achieve FMC
With the trend of network bandwidth and IP-based network, IMS can better support convergent
application. The rich IMS multimedia application has been an important edge for carriers to
compete for the market, for example, multimedia telephone, RCS, and Centrex services.
