Dans Chucho Valds il y a des connotations plus curieuses. Limportance
des ponts et/ou lintroduction comme ide contrastante devient
vidente lorsquon frle le monde classico-contemporain (en termes
de forme), cest le cas des churs nus sans harmonie initiale qui
prennent corps progressivement. Lorsquil accompagne la contrebasse,
il ne fait pas que rappeler lharmonie mais se fond dans sa sonorit.
Respect et brio, cest ce qui vient en tte lorsquon coute Chucho
jouer avec ses musiciens quils soient jeunes ou consacrs. Un exemple
dans Pilar: Gastn Joya est un prodigieux contrebassiste de 25 ans.
Cest encore une vertu qui fait de notre Chucho Valds un frre de
Miles Davis ou de John McLaughlin : il joue avec les meilleurs musiciens,
des vieux de la vieille comme Marsalis et des jeunes comme Gastn.
Jai battu avec cet album une sorte de record familial. Aprs une
premire coute, mon esprit critique et le plaisir se sont affronts
dans un bras de fer sans vainqueurs ni vaincus, mais ce nest quau
bout de la troisime coute le mme jour que jai t pntr par
la sagesse et lart de Chucho.

In Chucho Valds work, there are more peculiar connotations still.
The importance of bridges and/or introductions as way of providing
contrast becomes obvious when the style comes close to that of
the contemporary classical scene (in terms of form). This is the case
with the unadorned backing vocals which are initially left with no
supporting harmony and which then take shape little by little. When
Chucho accompanies the double bass, he does not only provide a
reminder of the harmony but also melts into its sound. The two words
which come to mind when you listen to him play with his musicians, be
they newcomers or old hands, are respect and brio. One example on
Pilar is Gastn Joya, a wonderful 25 year old double bass player (this
is another virtue which puts Chucho Valds on an even standing with
Miles Davis and John McLaughlin: he plays with the best musicians,
both old pros like Marsalis and youngsters like Gastn).
With this album, I broke a sort of family record. When I first listened
to it, my critical mind and my enjoyment battled things out with no
clear victor, but it was only after I listened for the third time the
same day that Chuchos acumen and skill truly struck me.
