Position Summary
The role of the Teacher Resident is to prepare recent college graduates and career changers for a classroom
teaching career within the Making Waves Academy (MWA) community, eventually becoming fully certificated
teachers. During the residency year, Teacher Residents will commit to a rigorous and supportive program that
develops highly-effective teachers. The year-long teacher residency is designed to help residents step into the
classroom as certificated teachers ready to make an impact on student achievement. Key areas of focus for
residents will be standards-aligned instructional planning, best-practice instructional teaching strategies, classroom
management strategies, student engagement strategies, and strategies to build relationships and rapport with
students and parents. Teacher Residents will also learn MWAs broader foundational elements for effectively
supporting our students cultural competency, social-emotional learning, and growth mindset. Teacher Residents
will not be assigned full-time teaching duties but instead be assigned to and supported by a Mentor Teacher who
they will observe, perform limited lessons in their classrooms, perform and receive coaching feedback from.
Teacher residents will also perform some limited supervision duties as well as have some release time to complete
assignments from their teacher credentialing program., . . The Teacher Resident position is a Full-Time position.
No previous teaching experience is needed. MWA will launch its inaugural cohort of the Teacher Residency
Program in Summer 2017.
Residency Components
During the Residency Year
Obtain practical classroom experience with structured, results-driven coaching from a mentor teacher
Challenge your students while challenging yourself as an educator
Learn and work with other residents in a cohort, creating a built-in support system
Earn a Master's Degree from Alliant University to advance your skills and knowledge; tuition rates are
subsidized and financial aid is available
Receive a $30,000 residency stipend (paid according to MWA payroll schedule)
Become eligible for an CA State Credential from the CTC
Primary Responsibilities
Assessment Design
Develop and practice developing effective, standards & skills-aligned formative and summative
assessments
Practice using various technology tools such as Mimio to help generate useful formative assessments in
the classroom in real-time
Foundational Learning
Learn key elements of MWAs social-emotional development framework to support effective and
productive engagement with students and families
Learn cultural competency skills through training and the use of cultural competency assessment tools
Learn key elements of efficacy and growth mindset approaches to learning to align with MWAs approach
to learning
If teaching math and English, learn key elements of SpringBoard curriculum
Duties
Successfully complete teacher credential coursework through Alliant University and remain in good
standing
Take direction from the Director of Teacher Residency; assist with some campus supervision duties as
assigned
Communicate proactively and professionally with the Director of Teacher Residency, cohort members,
MWA faculty and staff, students, and MWA stakeholders
Qualifications
Required Skills
Communicate with, teach and build relationships with students and their families in the culturally and
linguistically diverse MWA community
Collaborate and be a positive team player with colleagues, parents and community members to affect
the best outcomes for students
Commitment to learn and maintain fidelity to MWA instructional practices, norms, and protocols
Commitment to become an active participant in the school community attending school performances,
school assemblies, extracurricular activities, field trips and conduct home visits
Education
Bachelors Degree by June 2017 required
