Founded in 1958, Teat(r)o Oficina Uzyna Uzona Company pours into the mix of its
theatrical rituals music, visual arts, video, film, architecture, urban planning, and dance;
a process of co-creation between artists. The anvil where iron and body are forged,
where life is transformed and performed has been the Companys logo since its
foundation. The architect Lina Bo Bardi placed an iron anvil in front of the building.
Since 1967 and the staging of Oswald de Andrade's O Rei da Vela, the company's
aesthetic line has been anthropophagy, incorporated until this day into the creation of
its performances, rituals and films. Teat(r)o Oficina, in its many decades of existence,
has established itself as a creator of art and knowledge.
The company's headquarters, designed by Lina Bo Bardi and Edson Elito, is a work of
art awarded at the Prague quadrennial and listed in the three national patrimonial
instances. It was elected by Rowan Moore, architectural critic of the prestigious The
Observer/The Guardian (UK), as the best theater in the world, not only for its
architecture, but also for the intensity of its carnival-opera performances. This turns the
building and the Company into an important center of cultural tourism in So Paulo.
Bacchae, Bakxai, playing until April 2nd, is the last tragedy written by Euripides the
third greatest Greek playwright in his exile in Macedonia. There, in a house located
next to a land occupied by old Bacchae, he heard celebrations of rituals that dated from
the origins of theater and were preserved by them. Euripides documents and
reconstructs these rituals, far more ancient than him, in 25 chants and five episodes.
The ritual relives the arrival of Dionysius (Marcelo Drummond), the son of Zeus
(Roderick Himeros) and the mortal, Semelle (Camila Mota), in his hometown,
ThebeSP, which does not recognize him as God. The battle is set between the mortal
Pentheus (Fred Steffen), son of Agave (Joana Medeiros), who, via a coup d'etat,
overthrows his grandfather, Governor Kadmos (Ricardo Bittencourt), and tries to stop
the Theater of Bacchic Rites, officiated by Dionysius and the Choir of Bacchae and
Satyrs, from happening on the hills of the city.
The show has been part of the company's repertoire since the 1990's. With songs
composed by Z Celso, incorporating Revues, Bacchae is an electro-candombl
opera with music performed live by the choirs and a band, a team of over 70 artists.
