Structured Questions (Solution)

Solution (Q#01)
(a) Micrometer screw gauge
(b) 1. Check the micrometer for zero error.
2. Stack all ten pieces of the plastic sheet one on the top of another, and measure their combined thickness
with the micrometer.
3. If the micrometer has zero error, apply zero-error correction to the measured reading of combined
thickness taken in step 2 and calculate the corrected reading of the combined thickness of ten pieces.
4. Divide the corrected reading of combined thickness calculated in step 3 by ten, and thus find the thick-
ness of the thin plastic sheet.

Solution (Q#02)
(a) Micrometer screw gauge
(b) (2.5 mm + 0.23 mm =) 2.73 mm
(c) 1. Take a micrometer screw gauge and check it for zero error.
2. Measure the combined thickness of all pages in the magazine with the micrometer.
3. If the micrometer has zero error, apply zero-error correction to the measured reading of combined
thickness taken in step 2 and calculate the corrected reading of combined thickness of all pages.
4. Divide the corrected reading of combined thickness of all pages calculated in step 3 by the number of
pages, and thus find the thickness of the thin paper sheet.

Solution (Q#03)
(a) (i)

(ii) 1. Set up the apparatus as shown in the labelled diagram in (a)(i); the metre rule should be pivoted at
its centre of gravity.
2. Adjust the positions of the 100 g mass and the piece of rock on the metre rule such that the metre
rule is balanced.

3. Measure the distances from the pivot, PX and PY , of the 100 g mass and the piece of rock respectively.
4. Find the unknown mass m, in grams, of the piece of rock using the following formula:
100 (PX) = m (PY)
(b) 1. Take some water in the measuring cylinder and determine its volume V1.
2. Submerge the piece of rock into the water and determine the total volume V2 of the water and the piece
of rock.
3. Calculate the volume V of the piece of rock using the following formula: V = V2 V 1
(c) mass 88 g
density = = = 3.7 g/cm3
volume 24
cm3

Topic 01 Measurements Structured Questions (Solution)

Solution (Q#04)
(a)

(b) Determine the weight W of the rock with the spring balance, and then calculate its mass m using the formula:
W (where g is the acceleration due to gravity)
m=
g
(c) Readings to be taken:
1. volume V1 of the water alone
2. total volume V2 of the water and the piece of rock
(d) volume of the rock = V2 V1

(e) mass
density =
volum
e

Solution (Q#05)
(a) (i) First take some water in the measuring cylinder and determine its volume V1, then submerge the stone
into the water and determine the total volume V2 of the water and the stone.

(ii) Hang the stone from the hook of the spring balance and determine its weight W.

(iii) (W /
density of the stone =
g) V2
(iv)
- V1
A cork does not sink in the water; so the student should use a long thin stiff object (e.g. a long needle)
to submerge the cork into the water.

Solution (Q#06)
(a) 1. Take some water in the measuring cylinder and determine its volume V1.
2. Submerge the statue into the water and determine the total volume V2 of the water and the statue.
3. Calculate the volume V of the statue using the following formula: V = V2 V 1
(b) density of the material of statue = m = 600 g = 9.2g/cm3
V 65cm3
Which is less than 19g/cm3, so the statue is not made of gold.

Solution (Q#07)
(a) 1.81 sec (by taking mean or average value i-e)
1.8 s + 1.9 s + 1.7 s + 1.9 s + 1.8 s + 1.8 s + 1.9 s + 1.7 s + 1.8 s + 1.8 s
mean = = 1.81s
10
(b) By repeating the experiment several times with more than 10 oacillations and find mean.
