Mrs. Melville & Mr.

Peterson--5th Grade
Disclosure Statement
Welcome to 5th grade! We are very excited to get to know you and your child this
school year! Below is some information about our classroom procedures and policies.
If you have any questions feel free to contact us at lmelville@hawthornacademy.org and
rpeterson@hawthornacademy.org.
Classroom Procedures:
Homework:
Students will keep track of their homework in their agendas/planners each week.
Planners are not required to be signed by parents each week, but parents are strongly
encouraged to look them over and be aware of their students assignments. However,
we expect students to take responsibility for their work themselves. Typical homework
will consist of:
Reading: 20 minutes of reading daily. Students or parents will log minutes on
the Road to Success website.
Math: Math homework will be a weekly spiral review worksheet. There are four
problems to be completed each day Monday-Thursday (16 problems total).
These will be due Friday. Because it is intended to review all of the 5 th grade
math concepts throughout the year, there will sometimes be problems on these
homework sheets that involve concepts that have not yet been taught in class.
We will go over these problems before the homework sheet is sent home on
Monday. Each Friday, students will take a math quiz covering the same
concepts that were on the homework sheet for the week, so it is important that
students are completing their homework on time and are prepared for the quiz
each week.
Spelling: Students will have a spelling list of 30 words each week. Mr. Peterson
will email the spelling list each week. Spelling tests will be given every Friday.
Google Classroom: Mrs. Melville will be using Google Classroom for some
science and writing assignments throughout the year. About once a week or so,
there may be a quick assignment or quiz assigned as homework on Google
Classroom. I will also often post test review assignments and study guides on
the Google Classroom website. Please check this website often. I will send out
reminder emails when there is a new assignment posted.
Utah Compose: We will also be using the Utah Compose website for several
writing assignments this year. Most of this work will be completed in class,
however, your student may sometimes need to finish or revise an essay at home
if it was not completed during class time. Students can access this website from
home easily. Instructions are posted on Mrs. Melvilles class website under the
resources tab. (mrsmelville5thgrade.weebly.com)
Social Studies: There will be occasional projects and assignments that will need
to be completed at home, but most of the social studies assignments will be
completed in class.
Grading:
Grades will be entered into Aspire each week on Monday afternoons. Students
will receive grades in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. We use a
standard grading scale based on percentages. Assignments will be accepted for full
credit on the day it is due. Late work will be accepted for up to two weeks, but students
will lose 10% for each week it is late. Late work will not be accepted after two weeks.
The grading scale is as follows:
94-100% A 77-79% C+
90-93% A- 74-76% C
87-89% B+ 70-73% C-
84-86% B 60-69% D
80-83% B- Below 60% F
Absences:
Missed work will be sent home with your student after an absence. Please
contact the office if your child is going to be absent. If your child will be gone for an
extended period of time, please let me know a week in advance so we can prepare
work for them. Work will need to be completed within one week after they return to
class.
Birthdays:
As part of our schools wellness policy, no treats may be distributed for student
birthdays. Our class will recognize and celebrate your students special day. If you
would like to still contribute something, a donation to our class library or game collection
would be welcomed.
Parent volunteers:
There will be many opportunities to volunteer in our classroom, including field
trips, STAR tutoring, class parties, and Junior Achievement. If you are interested in
volunteering in any capacity, please let us know!
Classroom Management:
During the first week of school, the class will work together to create Essential
Agreements that incorporate the IB Learner Profiles. In addition to those agreements,
students will be expected to follow school and class rules, all of which coincide with and
build upon our Essential Agreements. Our class rules consist of the following:
1. Listen when someone is talking.
2. Follow directions the first time they are given.
3. Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
4. Take care of our school and classroom.
5. Work and play safely and quietly.
6. Its okay to make mistakes.
We also use a clip chart to monitor individual behavior. Students can clip up as
they are following rules and expectations, but will clip down if they need to be reminded
of rules and agreements. Students who clip up consistently will earn tickets that can be
redeemed for small rewards or saved for class auctions. We will also work toward
earning class points. When enough points are earned, the class will get a surprise
reward.
Contact Information:
The best way to contact us will be through e-mail at lmelville@hawthornacademy.org
and rpeterson@hawthornacademy.org. You can also contact us using the school
phone number, 801-260-3040. We will not be available to talk on the phone during
school hours, but you can call before or after school to speak with one of us. We will do
our best to respond to e-mails and phone calls within 24 hours. Please feel free to
contact us with any questions or concerns you may have at any time.
We are looking forward to a great year with your students!
