Welcome and Orientation Events for New Master Students at ETH Zurich
Workshop: Understanding the Swiss Going Beyond Stereotypes
Date: Saturday, 16.9.2017
Time: 9:00 12:00
Location: MM C 78.1 Alumni Pavillon
Target group: Students interested in Swiss culture, culture shock, intercultural communication, etc.
Content: Workshop about stereotypes, culture shock, typical Swiss values and patterns of
communication. Participants reflect on their own communication patterns and the differences
in values and communication styles between different cultures. The workshop is highly
recommended to students with different cultural backgrounds.

Welcome and Introduction Day (Part 1)

Date: Monday, 18.9.2017
Time: 9:15 11:00 (please be punctual!)
Location: HCI G7 Campus Hnggerberg
You will see a video transmission of the event in the main building.
Target group: All new Master students starting their studies (Swiss and international)
Content: Official welcome by the Rector, important information about your stay at ETH Zurich such as
course registration, exams at ETH Zurich as well as further relevant guidance; safety
instructions. At 11:00 the students will be split up into groups according to departmental
affiliation for the follow-up programme in the Departments (see below). There are no courses
held on the first day of the semester, so participating will not interfere with your courses.

Welcome and Introduction Day (Part 2)

Time: 11:00 individual (depending on Department)
Location: Individual locations (you will automatically be taken to the right place by your student
organisation which you will meet at 11:00)
Target group: All new Master students starting their studies (Swiss and international)
Content: Individual programmes of the Departments and Departmental Student Organisations. You
might receive a separate invitation with more details directly from your Department.

Welcome Wurst by VSETH

Target group: All new international students starting their studies
Content: Welcome event with BBQ from the VSETH (student organisation) for all new international
students, in cooperation with the International Student Associations.

Health insurance in Switzerland: All you need to know
Date: Thursday, 21.9.2017
Time: 18:15 19:15
Location: HG E7 ETH main building
Target group: For students from outside of Europe (who do not have the European Health Insurance Card)
and therefore need to obtain Swiss insurance.
Content: Presentation and Q&A session about Swiss health insurance for all non-EU students who
need to obtain health insurance. You will learn what to do in case of illness and how to get
an affordable insurance.

Content: Informal get-together over coffee and chocolates with representatives from the Student
Exchange Office and the International Student Support to answer any kinds of questions or
just for you to share your experiences with us and other students.

Tips and tricks for your studies

Date: Thursday, 5.10.2017
Time: 18:15 19:45
Location: HG E 7 ETH main building
Target group: All new Master students doing coursework at ETH Zurich
Content: Presentations by coaches from the Student Advisory Service unit on semester organisation,
learning methods, academic culture at ETH, tips and tricks for studying, how to prepare for
exams (especially oral exams); panel discussion with students.

Workshop: Oral Exams

Location: HG E 41 ETH main building
Target group: All new Master students with doubts regarding oral exams
Content: Hands-on workshop: put yourself into an oral exam situation, find your strengths and start to
improve your confidence.
