2.6

43
Tips:
When telling tourists the year, use A.D. (Year of Christ or Western Year) instead of
B.E. (Buddhist Era). Subtract 543 years from B.E. to get A.D., e.g. B.E. 2549 =
2549 543 = A.D. 2006.
At present, C.E. (Common Era) can replace A.D. which refers to only one religion.
C.E. is considered less interculturally sensitive.

Tips:
The British write date/month/year (30/11/2005)
The Americans write month/date/year (11/30/2005)

Warning: ALWAYS write the month as a word since numbers can create confusion.
For example 5/1/06 could mean the fifth of January OR May the first.

C. . Role-play

In pairs, take turns with one person acting as a tour guide, and
the other as the tourist. Ask questions and give answers about
dates:

For example:

When is the Kings Birthday in Thailand?

What year was the Millenium year?

What month is festival?

E. Read the following information about Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. Then take
notes under the headings given.

Sukhothai

Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand, which was founded in 1238 by
two Thai chieftains.
The name Sukhothai means Dawn of Happiness, as the era was referred to
as Thailands golden age, lasting 200 years.
During the reign of King Ramkamhaeng, Sukhothai prospered in terms of
military skills, arts, culture, literature and religion. The evidences are the
invention of the Thai alphabet, and the announcement of Buddhism as the
national religion.
However, the kingdoms gentle rule and religious focus led to its gradual
decline and it became a part of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in the 15th
century.

72
Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya was Thailands capital for 417 years, having 34 kings from 1350 to
1767 AD.

Ayutthayas kings were considered Gods, or Avatars of Vishnu, leading to the

creation of a hierarchical social system of ranks and titles.

King Narai encouraged relations with Western superpowers such as Holland

and France. Ayutthaya was the greatest era of international trade in early
Thai history.

Ayutthaya fell under Burmese rule twice, in 1569 and 1767. King Naresuan
gained back the independence of Ayutthaya in 1584. Unfortunately, the
kingdom had been completely robbed and the damage was beyond restoration.
King Taksin, therefore, had to move the capital to Thonburi after he had won
the city back from the second occupation of the Burmese.

Bangkok used to be called, the Venice of the East because there were a lot
of canals, or klongs, as the main means of transportation. However, due to
the growth of the population and the extensive modernization in the second
half of the 19th century, most canals were replaced by roads.

Old row houses made way for high-rise condominiums and office buildings.
Rapid development has brought about numerous problems such as pollution
and traffic jams.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

We are now approaching Chiang Mai, one of the most important cities in the
North of Thailand.

Let me begin by telling you briefly about its history.

Many years ago, three northern kings decided to choose a fertile plain between
Doi Suthep and the Ping River, as the site for a new city.

As a result, in 1296, the city of Chiang Mai was founded.

The city was surrounded by a moat and walls.

King Mengrai, the first king of Chiang Mai was a civilized patron of arts and
religion who built a lot of wats and monuments.

Chiang Mai became its most prosperous during the 45-year reign of King
Tilokaraja.

However, as a result of a continuous war, in 1558, Chiang Mai was occupied by

the Burmese which lasted for over 200 years, and was reclaimed by King Taksin
of Thonburi in 1774.

Thonburi, and later Bangkok, appointed many princes to rule over Chiang Mai.
The last ruler was Chao Kaewnavarat.

In 1939, Bangkok appointed the first Governor for Chiang Mai.

Lesson 4: Visiting the Temple of the Emerald Buddha

A. Read the following passages and take notes in the space provided. Then
use the notes to prepare a talk about:
1. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and 2. The Emerald Buddha.

1. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha was constructed in the eastern

section of the Grand Palace to install the Emerald Buddha. The
construction was done in 1784 in the reign of King Rama I. Unlike other
temples, there are no resident monks. The central building of the temple
is the Royal Chapel which houses the Emerald Buddha.

The grounds of the temple are surrounded by a covered gallery. Inside is

one of the worlds longest mural paintings telling the story of Rama, the
Indian god-king, in the Ramayana. Within the temple grounds, there are
several other buildings of royal and religious significance, such as small
chapels housing the statues of the past kings of the Chakri Dynasty, and
another one housing their ashes.

In the narrow passages between the buildings, there are statues of

mythical characters from the great stories of ancient Thai culture such
as giants, garudas, nagas and kinnaris.

2. The Emerald Buddha is, in fact, not made of emerald, but carved out of a
big piece of green jade. It was first found in 1434 when lightning struck
a chedi in Chiang Rai. At that time, the city of Chiang Rai
was ruled by the King of Chiang Mai, but when the Emerald
Buddha was being brought to Chiang Mai, the elephant
turned towards Lampang three times, so the King allowed
the Emerald Buddha to remain in Lampang for 32 years.

In 1468, the powerful King Tilokaraja had the Emerald Buddha

brought back to Chiang Mai. In 1551, King Chaichettha of
Laos, who was the grandson of King Tiloka, took the Emerald Buddha to
Laos and it remained there for 224 years.

King Rama I, still a General, captured Vientiane and brought the Emerald
Buddha back to Thailand in 1778 and the image was placed in the Royal
Chapel of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on 22 March, 1784.

There are three seasonal costumes made for the Emerald Buddha; one for
the summer, another for the rainy season, and the last for winter. There
is a special ceremony where the King himself changes the costumes of the
Emerald Buddha statue, as well as spraying lustral water over the
members of the Royal Family, officials and people outside the Ordination
Hall.

The Emerald Buddha is 66 cm tall (including the base) and 48.3 cm wide.
The image is in a seated position, with the right leg resting on the left
one, posed in an attitude or posture of meditation. It is believed that it
belongs to the late Chiang Saen or Chiang Mai school of Thai art.

1. The most interesting part of this temple is a huge that or Lao-style

chedi. It is a symbol of Isaan and is highly revered by Buddhists all
over Thailand. The exact date of the founding of the temple is under
dispute, but some archaeologists put it at about 1,500 years old. The
chedi is 52 metres high and each of its rectangular bases measures 12.33
metres. The top is decorated with 110 kilograms of gold.

2. It is located 8 kilometres from Phuket city. The temple houses bronze

images of two highly-revered monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho
Chuang. Luang Pho Chaem is famed for his role in quelling a rebellion by
Chinese mine workers who tried to occupy Phuket during the reign of King
Rama V.

3. It was constructed in 1357 by King Lithai of Sukhothai. The temple is

next to the bridge over the Nan River in Phitsanulok. The main hall
contains the famous Phra Buddha Chinnarat Image, which is second in
importance only to the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

4. This temple is on Suthep Road in Chiang Mai city. It was built by King
Kue Na. The chapel, in the north of the temple, houses a most beautiful
Chiang Saen style bronze Buddha Image called Phra Chao Kao Tue. This
image was originally destined for a more important temple, but it was so
heavy that it couldnt be moved, so instead a temple was built around it.
The remains of Chiang Mais royal family are in a group of small stupas in
the temple compound.

87
5. This temple is the most sacred temple in Chiang Mai, which houses the
relics of the Lord Buddha. It is located on top of Suthep mountain
about 15 kilometres west of the city, and at an altitude of 1,080 metres
above sea level. Inside the chapel there are some mural paintings
depicting the life of the Lord Buddha. Before reaching the temple,
there are mythical nagas leading up 307 steps to the temple entrance,
where the graceful northern-style golden stupa is situated. The temple
was built by King Kue Na of the Lanna Kingdom in 1385.

6. It is to the south of Bang Pa-In Palace, twenty kilometres from

Ayutthaya. It was built by King Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty. This
temple is unique in that it looks much more like a Gothic Christian Church.
You can get to the temple by crossing the river in a small trolley-like
cable car.

the viharn (or sermon hall) which holds the Principal Buddha Image
and several other Buddha images.

Tourist 1: What about that smaller building on the left at the back of the
viharn?

Guide: Oh, that is the Bot or ordination hall. New monks take their vows
there and it can be identified by six boundary stones. Women are
not allowed to enter the Bot.

Tourist 2: Is that a chedi right behind the viharn?

Guide: Yes, thats a chedi. It normally contains either sacred relics of

the Buddha or of a revered or venerated monk.

Tourist 1: Thats interesting. And I think I see the belfry next to it. Is that
right?

Guide: Yes, youre correct.

Tourist 2: I noticed a group of small houses on the left of the Bot.

What are they for?

Guide: Oh, theyre what we call kuti or monks cells.

Now, lets take a look to your right. That big pavilion is
especially for the Buddhists who come to perform religious
ceremonies such as to make merit for the dead.

And at the far back of the pavilion is the crematorium. As you

may know, when the Buddhists die, they are cremated rather than
buried.

MODULE 4
Learning about Thai Festivals

Lesson 1: Describing Joyous Festivals

A. Read the following information about a national festival in Thailand and

complete the notes.

Songkran Festival is the traditional Thai New Year which starts on April 13 of
every year and lasts for three days. Its a joyous festival. The Thais make
merit by giving alms early in the morning or going to the temple to give food
and offerings to the monks. After that, they may set free birds, fish and
turtles as a way to release their sins.

People usually wash themselves and clean their houses during this festival.
This symbolizes the cleansing of the soul. There is also a custom of bringing
sand into the temple compounds and building small sand castles. The
Buddhists believe that taking things from the temple is sinful and might cause
misfortune. Therefore, bringing sand back to the temple is a way to return
the sand which they have unintentionally carried away on their feet from the
temple in the past.

In the afternoon, people gather at the temple to sprinkle scented water on

the sacred (or highly respected) Buddha images and statues. They also visit
the elderly to ask for a blessing. The most enjoyable part of this festival is
taking part in an exciting water-throwing activity in which people splash or
pour scented water on the passers-by to freshen them up and also beat the
heat of the summertime.

At the beginning of the rice planting season around May, the Royal
Ploughing Ceremony is held at Sanam Luang Grounds in Bangkok to give an
auspicious beginning to the new planting season and to provide moral support
to the Thai farmers.

During the ceremony, over which the King presides, he gives the
awards to the most outstanding farmers and appoints Lord of the Festival
or Phraya Raek-Naa. Phraya Raek-Naa chooses panung or long cloth worn
about the hips as a prediction of the amount of rain in the approaching
planting season.

The actual ploughing starts with the sacred bulls drawing a red and
gold plough turning a few furrows. The Lord of the Festival then scatters
rice seeds over the newly-turned earth. After that, the sacred bulls choose
seven different foods and drinks rice, beans, maize, hay, sesame, water,
and liquor. Whichever the bulls choose is a prediction of the abundance of
agricultural products and trade for the coming year. At the end of the
ceremony, people gather the precious rice seeds to ensure a good crop in the
next year.

Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to our eco-tour.

I would just like to give you a brief outline of our itinerary for the next
three days.

Today, we will drive north of Chiang Mai, which will take approximately 2
hours and have lunch at a local restaurant, visiting a traditional Thai market
on the way. Then we will carry on to see the hot springs. In the afternoon
we will walk for about 1 hours to a Karen village, where we will spend the
night.

On our second day, we will walk for approximately 2 hours to the elephant
camp. We will stop for lunch at this camp and then ride the elephants for
about 1 hour to a Lahu and Akha village where we will stay overnight.

The village where we spend the night is located next to the river, so the
following morning we will board bamboo rafts, then slowly raft down the
river for approximately 2 hours.

The raft trip will end at a Shan village where we will stop for lunch. The
driver will meet us here and will drive us back to Chiang Mai.

Listen to the conversation, and write the advice (Dos and Donts)
5.3 the tour guide has given to the tourists.

Tourist 1: Its great weather for trekking.

Tourist 2: Personally, I think its a bit too warm.
Tourist 1: Yes, but thats why I brought light clothes and shorts.
Tour Guide: Thats a good idea, but I hope the shorts are not too
short, and your light clothes are not revealing.
Tourist 1: Oh, they are like the ones Im wearing now. Are they OK?
Tour Guide: They are fine. By the way, lets review what you should
and shouldnt do while trekking.
Tourist 2: Good idea.
Tour Guide: Please dont pick up or touch plants since some of them are
endangered species and some might be poisonous. Also,
dont step off the track.
Tourist 1: I agree. We might accidentally step on a rare species.
Tour Guide: And one more thing, you should be careful not to leave
litter either along the trails or in the villages.

126
  10/08/2007
Tourist 2: Sure. Talking about the villages, is there anything we need to
know before visiting the hilltribe villages.
Tour Guide: Well, dont kiss and cuddle. Showing affection in public is
not a part of hilltribe culture. And before taking someones
photo, please ask for permission. Also, do not touch any
household items as they might be of cultural or religious
significance.
Tourist 1: Oh, Im afraid I might do something offensive without even
realizing it.
Tour Guide: Dont worry. If you are in doubt about anything at all, just
ask me.

Listen to reasons for bringing certain items when joining a trekking tour.

Enjoy a one night, two days, half-board, home stay package in Plai Phongpang,
Samut Songkhram., for only Bt 3,000.

Located near the Chao Phraya delta on the Gulf of Thailand, the province was
formerly called Mae Klong, named after the river running through the town.

Samut Songkhram is divided into three districts: Amphoe Mueang, Amphoe

Amphawa, and Amphoe Bang Khonthi. An extensive network of natural and
man-made canals connects all three areas.

The people of Mae Klong live a very simple lifestyle and are known for their
generosity and strong faith in Buddhism.

The half-board programme includes spending one night in a Thai style house,
experiencing the Thai way of life, and watching the fireflies in the evening,
then offering food to monks next morning, and taking a side trip along the
Mae Klong river. You may also visit the Tha Ka Floating Market, and the Thai
Cat Preservation House.

The afternoon river ride starts from the Bang Kung Camp, a military camp of
King Taksin the Great, passing through a beautiful Thai garden as well as
visiting the museum that honours King Rama II.

Listen to the conversation between a tour guide and the tourists.

Tour Guide: Be careful! We are now crossing the water on this plank
to get to the house.

Tourist1: But it is covered in water!.

Tour Guide: Im very sorry. This is not quite the right time to arrive.
It is high tide. The water will go down soon. Please walk
carefully and hold the rail tight.

Tourist 1: OK. Lucky for me that Im wearing rubber flip-flops.

Tour Guide: Here we are. Welcome to a traditional Thai style house.

Tourist 2: This is gorgeous. I think its well worth walking through the
water for.

Tourist 1: I agree.

Tour Guide: This is a typical Thai house of the Central part of

Thailand. It is well suited to the way of life and the
climate. You can see the many large, high windows which
help the house keep cool. And the trees surrounding the
house bring a light refreshing breeze. Sadly, this kind
of house has now been replaced by Western-style air-
conditioned houses.

Tourist 1: Oh, what a shame!

Tour Guide: This is your bedroom. The bathroom is at the end of the
corridor.

Tourist 2: Oh, the bathroom isnt inside the bedroom?

Tour Guide: No. Local people usually take a bath in the open air, or
even in the river. The bathroom here is for your
convenience.

Tourist 2: I see. I notice they dont have fly screens on the windows.
But there are a lot of mosquitos and other insects at night,
arent there?

Tour Guide: Thai-style houses dont usually have window screens.

People sleep inside a mosquito net. The net can keep
away both the mosquitoes and the other insects, and it
isnt hot in the net.

roasted coconut, very hot chillies, and some chaphu leaves
which can be replaced with lettuce.

seasoning sauce which is a mixture of tamarind juice, vinegar,
palm sugar, fish sauce and powdered chilli. But you dont have
to worry about making this sauce; its now available in bottles.

Keep stirring over a high heat, and then add chicken stock or

down and add the seasoning sauce and chopped, unsalted turnip
pieces, and stir well. Then you can add eggs, peanuts,
chives and bean sprouts. Quickly stir them together and serve
piping hot with fresh vegetables.
