Course Description
The English Conversation II (Level 3) course is based on Units 1-6 of the Oxford University
Press book Smart Choice 2. This course will focus on four key language skills: speaking,
listening, reading, and writing, with a special emphasis on conversation. In addition to
textbook work, the instructor will use language games, role-playing, and other activities to
improve students familiarity with English and build confidence in speaking the language.
Course Requirements
Attendance: Students must attend all classes and arrive on time. Roll will be taken at
the start of every class. Attendance is a part of the students overall grade.
Being late 3x = 1 absences
7 absences = failing the class
Work: Assignments must be complete, neat, and on time. Late work is not accepted,
unless discussed with the instructor. Any late work allowed may receive a 10%
deduction for every week it is late. Assignments will be posted on the instructors
website.
Participation: Participation is a part of the students overall grade. Because the
course has a special focus on speaking, students are expected to go beyond simply
paying attention and taking notes. Students should make an effort to speak in English
at minimum one or two times every class. Mistakes are okay; we learn by making
mistakes. Attempts to engage with the instructor outside of class will also be noted.
Technology Use: Except when marking their attendance and when asked by the
instructor, students should not use smartphones, notebook computers, or other
electronic devices during class time.
Respect: Students should respect their classmates, the instructor, and the classroom
environment at all times. Any issues of disrespect will be immediately referred to the
Academic Deans office.
