Subject 1. Read the article about clothing and for questions 1 5, choose the answer (a, b, c or d)
which you think fits best according to the text. (5x2p=10points)
THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU WEAR
When getting dressed in the morning, most people think about how warm or companies such as Earth Wear
cool the weather is going to be that day and what colours they feel likeand Patagonia have been
wearing. However, there is a growing number of people who are starting to selling 100 percent organic
really think about what clothing they actually buy. For example, they want to cotton clothing. The cotton
know what its made of, who made it, and how its manufacture affects the used to make these items is
environment. Recent studies have shown that most cotton growers use grown and manufactured
chemicals that are dangerous to human health because they can find their waywithout the use of dangerous
into our water supply and into our food. For the past ten years, green chemicals.
But its not just clothing that people are starting to think about. Theyre also worrying about what they put on
their feet every day. Polyvinylchloride, or PVC, is used in the manufacture of many types of shoes. Research
has shown that this chemical threatens workers health although wearing shoes made with PVC is not
dangerous. One manufacturer, Nike, is eliminating the use of PVCs and is trying to reduce the amount of
dangerous gases it produces in its factories and in delivering its products to stores. It has also started a
programme called Reuse- A-Shoe that converts old trainers into football fields and basketball courts.
Nike, along with other footwear manufacturers, is also thinking about how workers are treated. Since 2001, it
has allowed inspectors to visit its factories to check on working conditions. The visits are arranged by the
nonprofit Fair Labour Association (FLA), which is an organisation that tries to provide safe and comfortable
working conditions for workers. Since these checks began, Nike has also begun discussions with Mexican
workers who want to organise an independent union. In addition, a group which represented the workers was
introduced in a Reebok factory in China. These footwear manufacturers are working toward meeting the FLA
requirements for a humane workplace. These requirements include clear safety rules and a guarantee that
workers have some control over workplace conditions.
Besides taking into consideration what a piece of clothing is made of and in what working conditions it is made
in, people should make intelligent decisions about the amount of clothing they actually buy and how much
money they spend. For instance, when youre thinking about buying a piece of clothing, ask yourself, Do I
really need this? Another option is to buy mostly secondhand clothing. Finally, when you decide to buy
something new, look for a Fair Trade label. Fair Trade items are made under a system that guarantees fair
wages and healthy working conditions in factories around the world. By making thoughtful choices about the
clothing you wear, youll enjoy it all the more.
