2017 Trigonometry Course Overview

Instructor: Brendan Whalen

Text Book: Trigonometry: by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider

Objectives:
This is a one semester course in the study of circular and trigonometric functions.
This course includes trigonometric applications to the real world. The course is designed to give the
student a thorough preparation in the trigonometry needed for further studies in mathematics.

Topic to be Covered:
Some of the topics to be studied this year are outlined below:
- The trigonometric functions - Acute angles and right triangles - Radian measure
- Angular and linear velocity - Trigonometric identities - Vectors
- Law of sines & Law of cosines - Graphs of trigonometric functions

Homework:
Homework will be assigned every day (with a few exceptions) and is due the following day. Students are
also expected to complete any reading assigned from the text.

Homework will be checked and will be graded as follows

2=all problems completed and all work shown
1=incomplete or missing work. (assignments may be brought in 1 day late for 1/2 credit, 1 point)
0=less than half done or no homework.

At times students may be assigned GRADED ASSIGNMENTS. The point values on these
assignments will vary depending upon the level of difficulty.

Grading:
Students quarter grades will be calculated using the following criterion:
-Homework: Each homework will be worth 2 points.
-Points for graded assignments will vary
-Quizzes: Each quiz is worth approximately 50 points.
-Tests: Each test is worth approximately 100 points.
-Your semester grade will be calculated as follows: Quarter 1 42%
Quarter 2 42%
Final Exam 16%

Test Retake Policy:

Retakes are available on unit tests that have a score of 70% or less. The retake grade will be averaged
with the original grade. If you are unsatisfied with your test grade, you must fill out a test retake form.
You may only retake a given unit test once. Retakes must be completed 2 days prior to the next unit test.

Make-up when absent:

You must make up all tests and quizzes within 5 days or your return to school from an absence due to
sickness. If a student is absent for an extended period of time, special arrangements can be made with
the teacher.

Field Trips and College Visits

As the field trip permission form states, you must make arrangement in advance with their teachers
regarding assignments and tests/quizzes. In addition they need to make sure that they have a good
source for lesson notes and homework explanations that they will be missing.
Extra Help
I am available for extra help during the following times:
-before school starting at 7:45 each morning.
-during A and D periods
-during office hours built into the schedule. (Th/F block weeks, W/F non-block weeks)
-Math Lab is also available for drop in tutoring.
It is strongly recommended that students seek extra help whenever they have questions or if they start to
fall behind.
