ART LESSON PLAN

Lesson Title: Metamorphosis Drawing: A Combination of Two Objects


Art Class: Drawing/Painting 1
Grade Level: high school
Suggested Time: 8 class periods

Description of Lesson: This lesson develops the concept that a form can be altered when two objects are
combined therefore giving a narrative quality to an art piece. Given a set of drawing skills and knowledge of
composition as well as the elements and principles of design, each student is challenged to create a drawing of
two objects that have been morphed together. An extensive workshop will lead this lesson in order to ensure
that students have the skills and knowledge they need in order to create a successful work of art.

Objectives:
1. While observing examples of metamorphosis, the student will demonstrate interpretation and
inquiry through discussing how each can tell a story through its alteration of form.

2. Given requirements and grading criteria, the student will demonstrate imagination through
sketching 15 thumbnail drawings in their sketchbook.

3. Given a review of drawing skills and composition the student will demonstrate media and form
through creating a metamorphosis drawing.

4. Given a writing prompt and rubric, the student will demonstrate stance and mediation through
completion of an artist statement that explains the artworks concept and use of formal qualities.

5. After a review on critique and etiquette the student will demonstrate reflective practice and
critique through critiquing their own and others work.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Participation in class discussion
2. Successful completion of 15 sketches that produce idea for summative project
3. Successful completion of metamorphosis drawing
4. Completion of artist statement
5. Participation in both in-progress and final critique

Semester starts with workshop of drawing media


Assign sketchbook assignment draw 5 sets of objects from observation, draw a
third for each that combines the two objects (total of 15 thumbnail sketches)
Introduce project using pinterest board and student examples

Demonstrate graphite transfer
Hold individual conferences to look over sketches and approve and/or provide

Review criteria by looking at both professional and student examples
Students revisit workshop work to push skills in chosen media
Students finish outline on illustration board
Day 3.
Give more demos to review if needed
Students begin to render their image
