Introduction

10mins. 1.Givethestudentsaquickoverviewofwhathasbeencoveredin
previousclasses.

2.Explainwhatthislessonwillconsistof,lettingthemknowthat
therewillbeamultipletesttowardstheendofthelesson,makingit
knownthatthetestisjustpartoftheassessmentforthewholeterm,
anddoesnotdecideonthetotalmarkthestudentgets(toalleviate
pressure).
3.Brainstormwhatthemainideasareinthepreviouslessonsandput
theseideasontheboard.

40mins. 4.Writethesemainideasonthebutcherspaper,makingsuretowrite
oneideaoneachpieceofpaper,andinthecentreofthepage.

5.Usingsignaltobegin,tellthestudentswhatyouwantthemtodo
andgivethemabout10minutestocompletethetask.Walkaround
theclassroom,encouragingstudentsasyougo,especiallywhenyou
canseeastudentputtingdownagoodpoint.Assistthosethatmaybe

7.Handoutthemultiplechoicetestsandgivestudents15minutesto
completethem.Letthestudentsknowthatiftheyfinishthetestearly
toturnoverthetestanddosomesilentreading.

8.Whenthe15minutesisup,getthestudentstoswapwiththe
personnexttothemandmarkthetests.

9.Oncetestsaremarked,getstudentstogivethetestsbacktoeach
other.

Introduction

10mins. 1.Introducethetopictothestudents,byprovidingthestudentswith
thehandouts,andtalkingaboutwhatqualitiescanmakeapersona
significantfigureinhistory(i.e.theiractionsandtheoutcomes,
personalityetc)

2.Explainwhatthislessonwillconsistofandwhywewillbedoingthe
activities.Alsosplitthestudentsintotheirgroupsandexplainthatthe
groupstheyareinwillbetheregroupsfortherestoftheproject.
NominateasignificanthistoricalAustraliantoeachgroup.

40mins. 3.Handoutthebutcherspaperandinstructthestudentsonhowto
drawuptheplacemat,ensuretheynominateonepersonfromtheir
grouptodoit.

4.Givethestudentstime(about5minutes)toreadthehandoutabout
theirAustralianfigure.Allowtimeforthosethatmaybeabitslowerat
reading.

5.Presenteachstudentwiththeirextendedwrittenresponse
question,makingsuretheyknowthattheyarenottowriteonthis
pageuntillater,butthatthequestionissothattheyknowwhat
informationthattheyneedtowriteontheirplacemat.

6.Givethestudentstime(about10minutes)tomakenotesonthe
placematabouttheirsignificantAustralianfigure,makingsurethey
areawarethattheyneedtomakenotesthatrelatetotheirspecific
question.Walkaroundtoensureallstudentsareparticipating,
encouragingstudentswhereneeded,assistingthosewhomaybe
strugglingtofindthingstoputdown.

7.Afterallowingtimefortheplacemat,spend5minutesreiterating
thestructureofanextendedwrittenresponse(andkeepingthis
structureontheboard,visibletoallstudents)andthenallowabout25
minutesforthestudentstocompletetheirextendedwritten
responses.
