Palaeolithic finds in Megalopoli - When lignite mining brings archaeological treasures to light
Panagiotis Vergoulis
Mining and metallurgical engineer, MSc Environment and development, National Technical University of
Athens (bergmet@yahoo.com)

During the Pleistocene geological epoch Megalopoli basin was largely covered by marshlands and a large
shallow lake, on the banks of which rich flora and fauna have developed. But when the waters found a
way out to the sea through the straits of Karytaina, the lush vegetation and, naturally, the animals
disappeared. Over the centuries, surface waters and rain have eroded the ground and transported soil
and sand from the surrounding mountains, which resulted in covering the once rich flora and fauna.
Remnants of the pleistocene fauna of the area have been found since ancient times, as Pausanias,
passing from Megalopoli basin in the 2nd century AD, wrote: there are bones that exceed in size the
human ones. There is even lore about them being the bones of giants, brought by Opladamus as allies of
Rea. (Pausanias, Arcadia, VIII 32.5).
-NEWS ON MINERALS -5- Vol 32 - 190 - 2017
In 1902, centuries later, the gigantic bones described by Pausanias were accidentally rediscovered when
a peasant from the village of Isioma Karyon saw them emerging on the bank of a stream. A research was
made by Skoufos, Professor of the University of Athens, that showed that the climate in southern Greece
changed many times during the Pleistocene period, as on the lake shores of the basin lived, without
coexisting at the same time, two completely different categories of mammals (categories based on the
climatic conditions in which they lived): mammals of warm climate and rich vegetation (elephants, deer,
rhinoceroses, hippopotami, horses) and mammals of cold climates and perhaps frozen land with steppe
and tundra vegetation (mammoths, bison, and hairy rhinos). It is noteworthy that this area is the
southernmost part of the planet where a hairy rhinoceros skeleton has been found, as, until today, such
mammals have been found except for Megalopoli only in Siberia and Poland.
The research went on at the beginning of the 1960s led by professor Ioannis Melentis and after 2000 by
professor Theodorou with no notable results.
In 2013 at the PPC lignite mine in Marathousa, about 2 kilometers west of Megalopolis, in Arcadia
(Marathousa 1 site), significant findings dating back to the Lower Paleolithic Period were traced. Stone
artifacts (paleolithic tools) were found there, next to bones of an elephant (of the species Elephas
antiquus) and other mammals, dating from 300 to 600 thousand years ago. It is worth noting that the
skeleton of the elephant, the excavation of which was completed in August 2015, was almost whole, and
there were rich traces of fauna (rodents, birds, amphibians and reptiles) and flora (pieces of wood, fruit,
etc.) of the Lower Paleolithic Period. The archaeological remains were kept in excellent condition due to
their rapid coverage by lake sediments.
In conclusion, the human presence in the area is verified even from the Paleolithic Age, although up to
now no human skeleton of that period has been found. According to the first archaeological evidence,
the people of the Paleolithic period used to construct stone artefacts in situ, suitable for skinning and
slicing the elephant. Traces of cuts by stone tools were found on several of the bones of the elephant,
suggesting that Marathousa 1 is a butchering site. It actually is the only outdoor elephant butchering
site known until today in the Balkans, and one of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece. It is
therefore extremely important for understanding Europe's pre-historic past.

Occurrence : In a 1 X 2 X 2 m pocket in marble.Associated minerals are : limonite,smithsonite and gypsum
General appearance : Heavily etched and rounded subhedral crystals (up to 10 X 8 X 6 mm)
Abstract Mereiterite is a new mineral from the Hilarion adit, Lavrion Mining District, Greece. It occurs as subhedral
crystals, included in gypsum, and is further associated with limonite and smithsonite, found in one large pocket in marble.
The transparent, non-fluorescent, pale yellow crystals show vitreous lustre and are very brittle without observed cleavage.
It is isotypic to that of leonite, K2Mg[SO4]24H2O. The new mineral is named for Dr. Kurt Mereiter of the Technical
University of Vienna.
What is important in Lavrion is when a mineral is identified try to locate some related minerals such as :
