Community tops the list

Bacchus Marsh Lions Len Murfitt and Russell Hendry
have been bestowed the highest award given by Lions
Club International.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship award recognises
outstanding members of Lions or members of the
general public.
Len and Russell were presented the prestigious award
by First Vice District Governor, Malcolm Qualtrough at
The Plough in Myrniong on Monday August 21.
The two charter members are among just one other
member of the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club to have been
awarded the honour in the clubs 45-year history.
The fellowship, as presented, comprises a special label
badge and wall display plaque.
Bacchus Marsh Lions Secretary, Ralph Fletcher said
Len and Russell were involved in 99.9 per cent of
projects conducted throughout the clubs 45-years.
It is not about individual awards for them, it is about
doing something enjoyable and worthwhile for the
community.
Len said the members were what made Bacchus Marsh
Lions Club what it is.
He said memorable projects included the establishment
of 28 beds at Providence Village in Bacchus Marsh and
a rodeo held at Maddingley Park.
Recipients of the Melvin Jones Fellowship are
honoured for their exemplary service to their club and
the community which it serves.
Russell said he was a reluctant recipient of the award.
It is a club award, he said.
We chartered with 27 members and have never gone
under that. It is a privilege to be a Lion.

season has officially commenced.

on public land during designated times of the year, and from

Its not every day you see live gar-
den gnomes running around the
schoolyard.
Preps at Bacchus Marsh Primary
School recently dressed up as the lawn
ornament figurines as part of National
Science Week.
They were joined by Gardening Aus-
tralia host Costa Georgiadis on Tues-
day (August 22).
Bacchus Marsh Primary School sci-
ence specialist, Jane McWhiney said
the popular TV personality helped
students enjoy a number of rotating
activities.
This years theme is all about future
earth and sustainability, so the preps
dressed up as garden gnomes and fol-
lowing a morning parade, they planted
vegetable seeds, made a bouquet garni
of herbs and learnt about worm farms
and composting, she said.
Science week is across the whole of
Australia and this is just one of many
activities that will be held at the school.
Yesterday we held a science fair, where
students showed off their experiments.
Mr Georgiadis said it was great to
be part of any school that celebrates
science.
This time Ive come all the way from
Hobart to visit all the little gnomes here
in Bacchus Marsh, he said.

allowed amount.
Under the Forest Act 1958, people who collect firewood
outside designated firewood collection areas and seasons
can face fines of $634, or a maximum penalty of one-year
imprisonment.

Any information the community may have about the illegal
removal of firewood for sale are encouraged to report to

Riely reigns

Moorabools Riely Ranieri is the
joint winner of the Ballarat Foot-
ball Netball Leagues Under-16.5
senior Robert Allan Medal.
The Ballan resident claimed the
prestigious award at the leagues
junior presentation night on Mon-
day (August 28).
Riely, who plays for North Bal-
larat, polled 14 points alongside
East Points Nick Stevens.
The Robert Allan Medal was in-
troduced in 2004 and sees coaches
vote on their top three players
from the opposing side. Players are
also awarded votes for inter-league
and state and Australian selection.
The 16-year-old midfielder said he
was shocked to have taken out the
top award.
I didnt expect it, but I was pretty
honored to win such an important
medal from the league, he said.
Rielys 2017 season saw his selec-
tion in interleague, the Greater
Western Victoria TAC Cup and
AFL Goldfields.

for us boys, he said.
The highlight of this season
would probably have to be finish-
ing first on the ladder though, as it
meant a lot to us boys.
Last year, we were knocked out
in the final so it was really good
to finish on top this time around.
Hopefully we can carry it all the
way through.

this week play Ballarat in the
semifinal.
I am feeling confident. We lost
by a goal last week but it was first
versus second team clash so we get
another chance. I think as a team
we are pretty confident too, but we
cant take that too lightly.
Riely said he hopes to carry on
with his football and later make it
to a higher level.
I will hopefully play in more
squads which will help me poten-
tially get picked and drafted.
Im a Geelong supporter so if

Opening soon promise

Its been embarrassing for council, but the section of the
Hallets Way extension that remains closed is set to open in
the coming weeks.
The section of OLeary Way, south of Werribee Vale Rd, has
remained closed even though the road itself had its official
opening weeks ago.
A delay with the transfer of land from developer to Council
prevented the road being opened at the same time the rest of
Halletts Way was opened.
Its very embarrassing - but out of our control, Mayor Dave
Edwards told the Moorabool News.
A statement released by council last week advised that it
should be open to traffic in the coming weeks.
Unfortunately, we couldnt open the southern section as
Council was waiting for transfer of titles caught up in a sale
of the property that is stuck at the State Revenue Office,
Infrastructure General Manager Phil Jeffrey said.
The delay in this process was out of our control and
unfortunately, this section couldnt be opened without the
titles being transferred.
As soon as we are in receipt of the title, all documents will
be lodged with Land Victoria to finalise the issue and the
road will be open to the public, which is expected in the
coming weeks.
In the meantime, theres a safety warning for drivers The
Moorabool News understands that the TAC would not cover
any accidents that occur on the unopened road.
We ask the community to obey the closure in place and
not drive on this section of road until this has occurred. We
apologise to the community for any inconvenience this has

converted into a multi-track

recording studio - but only
for a limited time.
Montville Lane Sessions is a
pop up studio coming to Bal-
lan on September 16 and 17.
The recording studio will
provide musicians with a
professional engineer, 24
track pro tools and drum kit,
amps and piano backline.
Project coordinator, David
Blake said the project was
a collaboration with Bal-
lans four-piece band, Little
Wigtown.
I did a bit of production
for the band during Ballans
Black Nite Black Lite festi-
val and we had such good
reception from that, we
thought why not do a pop-
up and see who comes out of
the woodwork.
Ballan has such a vibrant
music community and we
see this initiative as a way
local musicians can get
experience recording and
have tracks to use in promo
packages or released as fully
fledged singles and albums.
Recording sessions will be
available both day and night
and will be free of charge.
Ballan band Little Wigtown will be one musical contingent recording some of their tunes.

master their finished tracks
will be charged $250 per
band, but only if they are
happy with the recording.
If musicians are not happy

said.
All backline is being pro-
vided along with a 24-track
digital fully equipped mo-
bile recording studio. All the
musician does is bring their

There is movement in the shire, for the word is getting
around, that an economic development taskforce is soon to
be crowned.
Councils economic development team is meeting with
businesses throughout Moorabool and reviewing examples
of economic development taskforces regionally and
internationally to determine what best practice models look
like.
We look forward to working with business owners,
investors and stakeholders and producing great outcomes
for business in Moorabool, Mayor David Edwards told the
Moorabool News.
The taskforce members will also be ideally placed to
advocate for Moorabool projects through the networks and
contacts available to them.
Council has already put out for Expressions of Interest from
businesses across the shire, and while meetings have been
held the taskforce is still very much in its infancy.
Its about understanding Moorabool and ways that we,
council, can reduce red tape for businesses and improve our
governance processes.
The aim of the taskforce would be to drive businesses in,
and into, Moorabool.
We want to know how Moorabool can improve, and what
we can do that might promote businesses moving into
Moorabool and creating more jobs locally.
The outcome that we want to achieve is driving more
businesses into Moorabool, Cr Edwards said.

Its that time of year

With spring comes sunshine, an abundance of flowers, hay
fever and swooping magpies.
And it isnt the AFL football team that is annoying people.
The black and white magpie birds have started targeting
cyclists and pedestrians as part of their normal breeding
behaviour.
Suriya Vij, the Senior Wildlife Officer for the Department
of Environment Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), said it
was important for people to be aware.
The first incidents of Australian Magpies swooping at loca-
tions across Victoria have been reported over the past few
weeks, she said.
Being swooped by a territorial bird is no fun, but this is just
normal bird behaviour and, if possible, the best response is to
keep away from the area.
Known swooping spots identified in Moorabool by Google
Maps include Bacchus Marsh-Balliang Road, Rowsley; the
corner of Taverner Street and Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh;
Parwan-Exford Road, Parwan; and the Grey Street rounda-
bout, Darley.
If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird,
try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through
the area, Ms Vij said.
Some of the places where people are most likely to be
swooped are public spaces such as parks, particularly where
there are tall eucalypts.
Ms Vij said it is important for people to remember not to
harm native birds as they are protected under the Wildlife
Act 1975.
Residents are encouraged to notify others in their local area

Roads dont rate

There is not enough money for local councils to maintain
regional roads.
Shadow Minister for Regional Development Peter Walsh
said that a Parliamentary Inquiry into the Sustainability
and Operational Challenges of Victorias Rural and Regional
Councils, heard that country councils are struggling to meet
the high costs of maintaining their roads network.
The inquiry was told rural and regional councils managed
an average of 2200km of roads more than four times that of
city-based councils, Mr Walsh said.
Our rural road networks are crumbling and urgently need
an immediate funding injection to improve safety.
Moorabool Shire Council maintains a road network of more
than 1,440km of sealed and unsealed roads, with Moorabools
road assets (including roads and paths), having collectively a
current replacement value of more than $321M.
The Parliamentary Inquirys report is due by the end of
September.
BULLAROOK RECREATION RESERVE PUBLIC MEETING

Maiden winner
Tamara Henry had never played football
when she took to the field at the start of the
2017 season.
The 12-year-old was introduced to the sport
through Little Athletics and has topped off
a stellar season with the AFL Goldfields
Riddell Junior Girls under-13 best and fairest.
Tamara said she was very excited.
I wasnt expecting it because there are some
really good girls who play in my league.
Bacchus Marsh Under-13 girls football
coach, Brett Faulkhead said it was no
surprise Tamara took out the award.
Tamara came to us as a runner and a Inline
hockey player. Slowly as the year has gone
on, her skills have developed and she has
worked hard alongside the other 23 players,
he said.
Tamara has an outstanding running
ability, she is quick to cover space and very
sharing of the ball. For her to develop from
an athlete into a footballer and win the
leagues best and fairest is outstanding. It is
a great achievement, especially considering
she was up against girls who had played
football before.
The 2017 season saw the Bacchus Marsh
Cobras field the under-13 girls side for the
first time. They will compete in the league
grand final on September 10.
Mr Faulkhead said Tamara had been
appointed the captaincy role and would lead
the team into the final.
I rotated captaincy throughout the year
so everyone had the opportunity to lead the
team. At the end of the season, we finished
top of the ladder and a vice captain and
captain were appointed.
Tamara is a quiet girl but she fits the role
of captain well. She leads by example on the
field and isnt a selfish player. She brings her
teammates into the game and looks for any
opportunity to ensure she can pass the ball
to someone.
Mother, Jodie referred to Tamara as a
humble sportsman.
She has been doing Little Athletics with
Bacchus Marsh for the past six years and she
takes out her age group championship every
year.
In the first week of school holidays, she
will be representing the Tasmanian under-13
girls hockey squad in Moe, which is a week-
long nationals title, where she could be
selected in a state squad.
Tamara also plays on a hockey team where
everyone is well and truly in their 20s or 30s,
they dont adjust her game at all.
Tamara said she looked forward to the
upcoming grand final and acknowledged her
coach Brett and how well he has coached all
the girls.
Mr Faulkhead said for the first year of
under-13 football, Tamara and the whole
team had done very well.
To see a team progress into a grand final is
amazing, I am very proud as a coach and am
proud of every girl in the team in terms of

ment, backed by the Aus-
tralian Minerals Council,

ing environmental groups.
The proposed attacks on all
environmentalists include
mandating all environmen-
tal charities to spend 25-50%
of their funds on direct en-
vironmental remediation,
such as tree planting and
weed control. IE the mining
industry dirties the planet
then the money raised by the
environment groups, though
donations, will be legislated
to be spent on cleaning this
mining mess up.
The Government trying to
direct environmental groups
spending is the antithesis
of democracy and funda-
mentally compromises the
capacity of environmental
organisations to hold the
Government to account. If
this reform goes through,
many environmental groups
work doing research, com-
municating to the public
and holding politicians from
all sides to account for mis-

half.
While all environmental
groups consider on the
ground environmental re-
mediation to be incredibly
important, action on climate
change underpins all of
this work. Environmental
groups need to continue to
be able to act on climate to
protect the Great Barrier

ernment is attempting these
changes to the law around
charities it has also just re-
leased draft plans to reduce
our national network of ma-
rine sanctuaries - blatantly
ignoring their own scien-
tists. Devastating cutbacks
are proposed in our oceans
around Australia, paving
the way for destructive com-
mercial fishing and oil and
gas giants. In the last year
our oceans have been devas-
tated by coral bleaching, un-
precedented mangrove die-
back and disappearing kelp
forests. Our ocean ecosys-
tems and vulnerable marine
animals are under enormous
stress - they need marine
sanctuaries now more than
ever. If these plans go ahead,
we will be the first country
in the world to go back-
wards on marine sanctuar-
ies. These plans will carve
up sanctuary protection for
some of our most vulnerable
marine ecosystems at Lord
Howe, Geographe Bay, Perth
Canyon, the Great Austral-
ian Bight, the Gulf of Car-
pentaria, the Kimberley, and
our Coral Sea the cradle to
the Great Barrier Reef.
Meanwhile at the Com-
monwealth Bank, two coura-
geous people are currently
taking said bank to court.
This year the Australian
financial regulator warned
that climate change poses
a risk to the entire financial
system. Kim and Guy Abra-
hams shareholders of the
Commonwealth Bank for
over 20 years are taking
legal action over the banks
failure to disclose how cli-
mate change could impact its
investments. This is a world-
first: never before have
shareholders taken a bank to
court for not addressing the
threat of climate change. But
it makes so much sense: if
you are investing your mon-
ey in something, you de-
serve to know all of the risks
involved. This case will send
a ripple around the world
to all businesses investing
in fossil fuels and put them
on notice: unless they re-
duce their exposure to fossil
fuels, they are exposing not
just beautiful places like the
Great Barrier Reef, but also
their shareholders to signifi-
cant risk.
And on another positive
note the Darebin City Coun-
cil (northern suburbs of Mel-
bourne) has unanimously
declared that we are in a
state of climate emergency
and committed to take
strong action to address this.

It was also good news for
investors of similar sized
homes in Myrtleford (7.5 per
cent yield), Stawell (6.7 per
cent), Newborough (6.4 per
cent), Colac (6.1 per cent) and
Horsham (6.1 per cent).
Given that changes in prop-
erty prices and median rents
impact on returns, a high
yield is no guarantee a prop-
erty in that area will con-
tinue to do well. However,

Reserves played an elimination final against Lake Wendouree and though
the Lakers held a single goal lead at time, it was our boys that took
control after the first break to dominate the game, not only running out
victors by 34 points but also keeping Lakers goalless for the rest of the

U18s had a tougher game where we played Lake Wendouree in an
