Abstract
The Romanian Orthodox Church commemorates this year 60 years since the
th
patriarch Nicodim Munteanu passed away to the kingdom of heaven, on the 27 of
February 1948. He was the patriarch who had to face the profound political, social and
economic changes that Romania crossed in that period, changes which were reflected
th
also in the ecclesiastical and spiritual life of our people. The patriarch was born in the 6
of December 1864, in a mountain village from Moldavia, in a region deeply rooted in the
orthodox faith and his entire life was a proof of orthodoxy and verticality. Perhaps his
main concern was the mission he had, as a shepherd of an entire nation, to keep the faith
alive and to give hope to those who started to loose it. For this mission he prepared
himself a whole life, starting with his studies at the Theological Seminary Veniamin
Costachi from Iassy and The Spiritual Academy from Kiev, continuing with his activity
as a bishop in Iassy, Husi, Chisinau and Hotin. In 1924 he chose to retire at the Neamt
Monastery as its abbot and here he started an enormous scholarly work: many
translations, writings and printings. In 1935 we was elected as a mitropolit of Moldavia
and just two months before the second world war had started, in 1939, The Holy Synod
of The Romanian Orthodox Church called him to be its patriarch. The period of his
patriarchate represented only the beginning of the sufferings and martyrdom our people
had to live during the communist period, but he was permanently fighting with the new
political system, chosing always to defend the dignity of the Church and of the
Romanian People. He will remain in the history of the Romanian Orthodox Church as a
person with a remarkable integrality and a true missionary vocation.
