GRADUATE ACCOMODATION INTERNET SERVICE

SETUP GUIDE

Internet access is via a network router that connects to a data socket in your flat. This requires your IT
Services Remote Access username and password. All network traffic will be logged against your username
for audit purposes.
By connecting to the service you agree to abide by all relevant law, rules and regulations, further

Before you begin


You will need
1. An Eduroam WiFi/VPN account (also known as a Remote Access account) see
https://register.it.ox.ac.uk/self/remote_access. This uses the same username as your Oxford
SSO account. For security, use a different password to your Oxford SSO account.
2. A cable router.
3. A mains power adapter.
4. 1 or more network cable(s).

Connecting your router


Step 1: Turning your router on - Plug the mains adapter into the wall and connect the power cable to the
back of the router. (At this step DO NOT connect a network cable to the wall socket)
Step 2: Remove the white sticker. If there is a white sticker on the underside of the router with
GRADUATE ACCOMMODATION, peel it off and dispose of it.
Step 3: Router Reset Your router should be reset. This can be done by pressing the reset button at the
back of the router for 10 seconds. You will need to use a paperclip or similar to press the button. All of the
lights on the router should come on.
Step 4: Connect to the router After router reset you need to connect to it and configure it. There are 2
ways to connect: wired or wireless
WIRED: Connect a network cable between your PC and the router port marked LAN1 and make sure your
PC is set to receive an IP address by DHCP
WIRELESS: Connect to the wireless network TP-LINK_wxyx where wxyx are the last four characters of the
MAC Address on the back of the router.

The default Wireless password / PIN to connect to your router is detailed on the bottom of your router.

Step 5: Connect to the management interface. When connected open a web browser and type in the
following address http://192.168.1.1. You will be prompted to enter a username and password.
They are:
Username: admin
Password: admin
You should have a page that looks similar to below:

Step 6: Select Quick setup from the menu on the left. Select NEXT.
Select Ethernet WAN and click NEXT. You will now be on the WAN Configurations page:

In WAN link type the PPPoE(PPP over Ethernet) option should be selected
In PPP Username enter your Remote Access username (this is the same as your SSO username (e.g.
abcd1234)
In PPP password, enter your Remote Access password. This is the same password you use for Eduroam
and the IT Services VPN service.
Select NEXT
You should now be on the Quick Setup Wireless Configurations page:

Click NEXT and you will see a summary page. Then click CONFIRM
You should now have a Device Info Screen:

Step 7: Connecting to the service. Now plug a network cable between port LAN4/WAN (highlighted blue)
and your live wall socket.

After a few minutes your router will be authenticated and connected to the Internet Service when the
3rd LED from the left on your router is lit a steady green.

Step 8: Wireless changes: On the menu on the left now select Wireless and the sub section below it Basic.
Change the Country to UNITED KINGDOM (it is between GABON and GRENADA) and click SAVE / APPLY
On the menu on the left now select Management and the sub section below it Access Control. Change
the admin password for the router from the existing of admin to something that only you know and select
SAVE / APPLY. This will enhance the security of your router.
Step 9: Logout: On the left menu select Logout.
The router will now be connected and the front LEDS for Power, Internet, Wireless Lan and LAN4/WAN
should be lit green.

Note: If you had problems configuring your router you should reset it and start the setup again. Before
doing a reset disconnect the network cable from your routers LAN4/WAN port. Now press and hold the
reset button at the back of the router for at least 10 seconds. You will need to use a paperclip or similar
to press it in whilst the router is powered on. All of the lights on the router should come on and then off.
FAQ:
I cannot connect to the internet yet my device is connected to the router? Check the routers internet
LED is lit green which is the 3rd LED from the left. If it is not lit then this indicates a likely error in your
Remote Access username or password so check Step 6 in these instructions.

How do I report a problem with my internet? Please call 01865 280923 or email

What can I use the service for? The network is intended primarily for academic purposes but the
reasonable and limited use for social and recreational purposes is acceptable for tenants. All use must be
legal and meet the University regulations and policies applying to all University ICT facilities.

Who can use the connection in my flat? The only people permitted to using the connection in the flat are
those living in it. Ultimate responsibility for the service and all activity on the connection lies with the
individual whose remote access account is being used.

I dont want to use wireless, can I turn it off? Yes, if you do not wish to use the wireless service, simply
hold down the Wi-Fi button on the rear of the router until the Wi-Fi light goes out.

Can I turn it off overnight or whilst I am out? Yes. It is fine to turn the router off if you dont want to use
it for a period of time. Simply press the ON/OFF button.

What if I have more than one wired device? The router has a built in switch with 3 yellow ports capable
of connecting 3 wired devices. If you need to connect more devices you are advised to purchase a 100Mbit
switch.

Where can I get more network cables from? Network cables (sometimes labelled as UTP, cat 5 or cat5e)
are available from IT Services on Banbury road or local retailers.

Can I change my Wireless Wi Fi logon password? Yes. Go to Step 5 and login to your router. On the Left
Menu select Wireless option and then select the Security option. Your screen will now display a Manual
Setup AP option. Click in the Wireless Network Key box and delete the existing key and type a new
password between 8 and 63 characters long and note it down so you can connect other Wi Fi devices later
on. Click the Save/Apply button. You will be logged off from the router and you will now have to reconnect
to the routers Wi Fi with your new password.

I am due to leave my accommodation, what should I do? When leaving your accommodation, simply
reset the router by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds with a paper clip until all of the lights come
on. This will wipe your logon credentials from the device.
