Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
There are many different types of freedom: physical freedom, financial freedom, creative
freedom, mental freedom. All of these freedoms are unique and distinct, except for one thing.
You do.
What a minute! You say. Thats not true! What about someone whos imprisoned? How
can you say they have freedom?
Im stuck in a dead end job in this miserable economy; a family to feed, a mortgage and car
payment to make. I dont have any options I have responsibilities! Im not free! Im just
surviving.
Hold on a minute. Im not asking you to take my hand and go skipping gleefully through a field
of daisies with blinders on.
Hear me out.
Nelson Mandela. Victor Frankl. Immaculee Ilibagiza. Darryl Hunt. Some of these names may
be familiar and some not.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for speaking out against apartheid. Yet, when he
was released, he went on to lead the very country that had once imprisoned him .

Victor Frankl lived through the Nazi concentration camps, facing despicable horrorsall the
while maintaining and fueling his sense of kindness, gratitude and abundance.
Immaculee Ilibagiza survived the Rwanda genocide, hiding out in a cramped bathroom with 7
others for 91 days, yes, 91 days. It would have been so easy for her to be consumed by hatred,
bitterness and resentment. Instead, she actively sought out her familys killers and forgave
them.
Darryl Hunt, wrongfully imprisoned for a 1984 murder, spent nearly 19 years in prison.
Recently, he spoke to the graduating class of Duke Law and said this, Every person should have
some conviction to stand on. The only thing I had was my innocence. In regard to his attitude
upon being released, he said, I wanted to live. Bitterness and hatred can eat you up on the
inside. I was at peace in my heart.
I wanted to live.
And then theres the story of the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting back in 2006. A man killed ten
schoolgirls and then committed suicide, leaving a wake of unspeakable grief and horror.
Amazingly, the Amish community quickly responded, not with anger, but with unconditional
forgiveness to the murderer reaching out to his family with baskets of food and warm
welcomes to their homes.
These are powerful stories of individuals, and entire communities, choosing to respond
authentically in a way that is right for them having the strength and courage to choose a
response that most of us wouldnt choose, or wouldnt have the guts to choose.
While many, if not most, would take the easy road of anger and revenge, these people
demonstrate the power of being grounded in authenticity and living a full out expression of
who you are, especially when its painful, scary, uncertain, and challenging.

They didnt let the conditioning of the world they were living in keep them from choosing who
they are.
You can be that kind of person, too. The world is waiting to be a better place because of you.
The Final Freedom the one freedom that no can give you OR take away is this:
We are addicted. Americans are flat out, completely, unequivocally jonesing. Im not talking
about alcohol or crack or ecstasy. Im talking about our addiction to self-help.
Everywhere you turn, youre on the consumerism treadmill. Too fat? Try this pill. Got
cellulite? Buy this dimple cream. Too much junk? Rent a storage unit. Need to feel better
about yourself? Watch these losers on reality TV.
Self help is an $11 billion a year industry perpetuated by the belief that you and I are not
enough. Inherently, we are flawed, broken, compromised. This broken view of ourselves keeps
us in a constant state of victimhood, failure, mediocrity, and yes, consumerism.
Hey, if youre broken, you need to be fixed, right? So what happens when you live your life
from this perspective always looking for the solution outside of yourself? Its a recipe for
disempowerment, disappointment and struggle.
Freedom outside of yourself is an illusion. Freedom is not given or taken away. Ultimately, we
all have the power of choice. Even in the most challenging of circumstances and environments.

How do we know this is possible? We look to people who have made the choice, and continue
to choose.
I see you over there. I see you rolling your eyes. Nice theory, Kim, but Im not buying it.
Maybe that worked for them, but Im not them.
Well, guess what? Last time I checked, you were human, right?
You can choose anything if you want it bad enough. Remember, the person who really wants to
do something finds a way, the other finds an excuse.
Self help doesnt work because its inherent proposition is flawed. As long as you see yourself as
not enough, you will search endlessly for that person or thing or situation that will fix you. You
will read endless books, go to countless seminars, and on and on. But nothing ever changes
because the focus is misguided.
3. Someday I might reach my potential. (If Im somehow good enough at some point in
time, I might finally be able to get what I want.)
Self help keeps us in our not enough so that we stay on the endless hamster wheel of
consumerism, doubt, and judgment.
George Carlin, the famous comic, observed that there is "no such thing" as self-help: anyone
looking for help from someone else doesn't technically get "self" help; and one who
accomplishes something without help, didn't need help to begin with!
Its time to detox. Its time to wean ourselves off the self help money train.

revolutionary it will alter forever how you see yourself and the world. All this and you dont
have to change who you are! You just have to change who you think you are.

We are entering a critical point in our history. There is no greater time than now to be who you
are! Each day that goes by without you loving and living your authentic self not only keeps you
from evolving; it keeps the world from evolving.
A shift is happening. Were moving from the Information Age to the Age of Authenticity. In the
present day, information is king. Whatever we want to know, whatever we need to know, is
right at our fingertips. It seems like nothing is outside our grasp.
Weve got millions of ways to communicate -- everybodys talking and texting and tweeting. So
much to say, but whats really being said?
There is a crisis of connection. Most of our conversations are like a drive-by shooting -- fast,
furious and ugly. OMG, TTFN, BFF, LOL. The English language is being perverted and so is our
sense of connection.
We have a better relationship with our gadgets than we do each other. We cant walk our
dogs, go grocery shopping or drive our cars without talking to or texting someone. (My smart
phone is my life. Mess with my Crackberry and you die!)
Always connected . . . at least thats what we think. Were suffering from an Illusion of
Transparency. Just because were talking all the time, accessible 24/7, sharing our pictures of
last nights party, alerting the world when we are at Starbucks for our second latte of the day, it
doesnt mean thats all there is to life. Our communication has turned into focusing on what
we do. We allow people to see us, but only what we want them to see. Weve lost who we are.
We are a collection of sound bites.
The Illusion of Transparency is a smoke and mirrors game. On the surface, it appears we know
more about each other than ever before. But what do we really know?

I think not.
There is a shift going on. Most people cant sense or see it. Most people cant feel it.
Information is not your truth. You get to decide what is true for you. But only if you are awake.
Most of us are asleep, living in a satin lined coffin . . . the walking dead. George Romeros
zombies have nothing on us!
Information is really just a tool. You get to decide how you choose to use it. Does it work for
you or against you? Information does not have meaning until we give it some value, some
sticking point.
In this Age of Authenticity, the people that will thrive in the years to come possess the ability to
create meaning, to make things real and to make their experiences and other peoples
experiences real by living who they are.
These agents of change are called Abundant Evolutionaries. As catalysts, they understand you
cannot live your entire life in a vacuum. A life without depth, self-reflection, and self-
awareness is a crisis of connection. At some point, we all yearn for something more. We crave
a deeper meaning to life. Who am I? Why am I here? What is my contribution?
Abundant Evolutionaries are catalysts for greater meaning. They embody the principle:
You CAN influence your own evolution. You dont have to wait for someone else or something
else to fix who you are. Youre not stuck. Youre more than enough.
To do this, lets first break down each of the self help myths to reveal their inaccuracies.

When you see yourself as broken, you are harboring a belief that you are flawed, that you need
to be fixed. This is closely linked to the #1 type of scarcity thinking the Illusion of Not Enough.
The Illusion of Not Enough is when you cant trust who you are, resulting in feelings of being
incomplete not good enough, smart enough, thin enough and the list goes on and on.
It is a perception of lack.
When we see ourselves as broken and not enough, we are saying we dont have what it takes
to get what we want.. This is ultimately disempowering. It makes us feel stuck. Even worse,
for many of us, it gives us a pass on responsibility.
Its not my fault. I had a bad childhood. My parents didnt give me what I need. How
can I take responsibility if I dont have what it takes to get the job done in the first place?
This first myth is an excuse to stay in our satin-lined coffin. Its an excuse to remain where its
comfortable and familiar where we dont have to stretch ourselves.
In other words, its a death sentence. The problem is, for many of us it is a slow agonizingly
painful experience. It takes years and years for many to die, all because they are chasing
something outside of themselves. Which brings me to myth #2.
Being trapped in the Illusion of Not Enough is like living in quicksand. We struggle and struggle,
fighting mightily and with good intention. But what are we fighting?
When we believe that we are not enough, there is only one alternative to getting what we
want. We cant get it inside ourselves, so we have to look outside of ourselves. We look to
other people and things to fix us. We wait for the knight in the shining armor to come galloping
in on the white steed and save the day.

We expect to be rescued. And when we arent rescued, we become disappointed, angry, sad,
lonely, bitter, and resentful. For many, when nobody comes to rescue us, we shut down. We
stop trying at all. We give up.
Expectations and assumptions are a form of control. Anytime we try to control something or
someone outside of ourselves, we are ultimately disillusioned. Why?
Because it is an illusion to believe that we can truly control anything outside of our direct
influence.
Myth #2 perpetuates the story that we are helpless. It makes us victims and martyrs.
And the last time I checked, victims and martyrs werent cruising towards the finish line of the
happy race.
Potential is another myth perpetuated by the Self help industry. Were in love with the idea of
our potential. Its a full blown, knock-your-socks off, love affair. Heck, theres even a segment
of the Self help industry called the human potential movement.
Caveat here: Im not saying these people are bad or wrong for focusing on potential. They are
well intentioned. And, at the same time, the Age of Authenticity is going to require a new
paradigm.
Heres why I dont believe in potential. Potential is future based. When we talk about
somebodys potential, there is an underlying belief that they dont already have what it takes.
They are somehow deficient (i.e. not enough see Myth #1.)

Its a negative reinforcing cycle. If I see myself as needing to be fixed and I need someone else
to fix me, where is the potential? The potential is dependent on something outside of me that I
have no control over! The potential is a groundless wish that I will be rescued because I dont
have what it takes today. The only reality here is a recipe for disappointment, struggle and
unhappiness.
Potential is a hollow hope grounded in nothing but fantasy. Why fantasy? Because every time
we get caught up in the past with regret or shame, or caught up in the future with anxiety,
passive wishing or longing, we hold the present hostage.
That my friends, is the Illusion of Time. (Another popular form of scarcity mentality.)
Abundance Intelligence is the system for personal evolution. There a three cornerstones of
this system.
Is it hard to believe?

Im not surprised if youre struggling a bit with this one. Why is it so easy to come up with
arguments about why were not great?
Let me back up a bit. In the world of Abundance Intelligence, we define abundance like this:
In our conditioned society, we equate abundance with prosperity, wealth, material possessions.
Abundance is what we can see. Abundance is what we can possess.
But in my world, abundance is much more than what you have. Its the ability to be who you
are and do what you can do.
Again, Im not being nave here. Wealth and material things have the potential (wink wink) to
make your life easier and more comfortable. (We also know of all the stories from lottery
winners who end up miserable and penniless after winning the big jackpot.)
But true happiness, personal satisfaction and fulfillment only come from living who you are and
doing what you can do being boldly, vibrantly alive.
How can we be boldly, vibrantly alive when we are not enough, addicted to fixing and looking
to get rescued? Hmm. Chew on that one for a moment.
When you were born, you were born great. You were born with everything you need, want and
choose to be who you are.
Wait a minute! you say. Im not great! I dont have that promotion I want, I havent written
that book yet, I havent met the love of my life yet! Im struggling to pay my bills! And on and
on and on.

Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
When people argue against their greatness, its always the same theme.
Remember, true abundance is exercising the freedom to be who you are. Greatness is not
contingent upon things being achieved, earned, or given to you. The only thing greatness is
dependent on is you. As long as you see yourself as not enough, you will never live into the
greatness that is already there, waiting for you.
People who are positive thinkers see the cup as half full.
People who are scarcity thinkers see the cup as half empty.
People who are abundant thinkers see the cup as overflowing.
But people who are living into their greatness ARE THE CUP.
Society (which is conditioning) focuses on whats in the cup. Greatness focuses on being the
cup.
Authenticity is perfection.
Its time to let go of becoming. When we try to become who we think we should be, we are
basing all our decisions on conditioning.
Conditioning is all the thinking, beliefs and behaviors handed down from society and people in
the world, including our parents, friends, teachers and peers. And they got their beliefs and
behaviors from the conditioning they inherited! Pretty scary when you think about it, huh?
Conditioning is insidious because we get so used to it that we think its really who we are!
Pretty soon, our thoughts are really somebody elses!
The problem with living our Conditioned Truth (who we think we are) is that we dont live
13

Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
Abundance Intelligence is the system for discovering and living your Authentic Truth (i.e.
personal evolution). It unravels your conditioning so you can choose your greatness over your
fear.
In other words, when you are living your Authentic Truth, you are actualizing your abundance.
More about this later.
To evolve abundantly, we must stop shoulding on ourselves. Every time we try to become
like someone else, we are resisting what is.
The seven illusions (which you will discover in Section 3) are the most common ways people
resist being who they are.
To think and act like we can be anyone other than who we are is conditioning. This thinking
keeps us frustrated, stuck and miserable. And most importantly, it deprives the world of our
greatness.
Authenticity is perfection.
You were meant to live your Authentic Truth. It is who you truly are, stripped of all your
conditioning. And who you are is perfect. Its up to you to have the courage to see it.
Realization #2: You already have everything you need, want and choose to be who you are.
As I said earlier, you were born great. Potential, on the other hand, holds that someday, if you
work hard enough and are just lucky enough, you might be great.

You may say its just semantics, just words. But heres the kicker: we attach meaning to words.
Feelings and emotion are attached to words. Its what gives them their stick-ability.
Abundance Intelligence is all about focusing on the here and now because the here and now is
the only thing you can control.
Your greatness capacity is the knowing that you already have everything you need, want and
choose to be who you are. Thats what I mean when I say you were born great.
Your greatness capacity is like the capacity of your brain. Youve probably heard that, at best,
the average person uses about 10 percent of their brains capacity.
Does that mean the other 90% doesnt exist? Of course not!
Its the same with your greatness capacity. The concept is just hard for people to accept
because its an intangible. Im asking you to believe in something you cant see. But your not
enough is an intangible too. Why is it so easy to focus on what we dont want and what we
dont have?
Thats because the minds job is to find evidence to validate our beliefs. If your underlying
belief is that you are not enough, your mind will faithfully go on looking for reasons why that is
true. This goes on and on, until you examine your belief.
By examining, I mean consciously focusing your awareness on the belief. Then you get to
decide if that is really your Authentic Truth. Thats the practice of Abundance Intelligence and
Ill have more on that later when we get into the four steps.
Its all about energy management. When you put all your energy into finding evidence of why
youre not enough, fixing yourself, and getting caught up in things that you have no control
over, that leaves precious little energy to do what you can do.
When you orient your life around your capacity, the following shifts are possible:
15

kim@coachingintogreatness.com
Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
I said earlier that feeling and emotion are what give words their stick-ability. Lets look at this
a little more closely:
Thats how thoughts become things, my friends. Your thoughts drive your beliefs which drive
your behavior. If your thoughts and beliefs are largely unexamined, you are living in the
conditioned world. Why? Because you are on auto pilot.
Have you ever pulled into your driveway and suddenly realized that you dont remember
driving the last 3 miles to your house?
Abundant Evolution is not possible when conditioning is king. Why? Because you can only
evolve abundantly when you are aware of who you are, and who you are not. Remember, your
Conditioned Truth is who you think you are and your Authentic Truth is who you really are.

Unless you are aware of your conditioned patterns (thoughts become things), you will never
have the awareness to then choose the truth of who you are.
I was recently working with a new client who was struggling in her current teaching position.
The school suffered from a lack of systems and poor communication, resulting in the consistent
turnover of teacher dissatisfaction and attrition. The teachers that were left had to deal with
uncertainty, last minute upheavals and disrespect.
My client was all caught up in what the school didnt have, what they werent doing, what
wasnt working. She talked fervently about how she hated the uncontrollable situation she was
in, and then in the next breath spoke of wanting to write a proposal to the school on how she
could help them improve their teacher recruitment and retention. But the school had no
money or mindset to look for solutions.
She was quiet for a moment. Then she replied, What do you mean, what do I want?
What will bring you happiness? Getting caught up in the schools problems, or rebuilding your
own business?
And then the light bulb went off and she thanked me.
She had been so caught up in fixing things and focusing on things she couldnt control, that she
had lost sight of herself and what she really wanted. She had been living her Conditioned Truth.
When I asked her what she wanted, she suddenly remembered she had the power of choice.

She could choose to let go of the fixing. She could choose to ask herself what she really
wanted. She could choose to put herself first.
Heres why I love this realization so much: NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR POWER OF CHOICE.
The earlier examples demonstrate this. Even if you are imprisoned, wrongfully accused,
misunderstood, criticized or ostracized . . . no one can take away your ability to choose who you
are in the moment.
It is the last great choice we have and the final freedom. It is the essence of a life well lived.

So now youve got the principles behind Abundance Intelligence. Lets look at the proven
system that moves people from scarcity to abundance--the beginning of what it means to

See It see what you want, see your greatness, see whats
holding you back
The guiding principle of the See It phase in Abundance Intelligence is to practice being the
Observer.
Being the Observer means paying attention to our thinking, beliefs and behaviors. We observe
what is going on and then we get to decide if that thought, belief or behavior
is true for us:
Does thinking, believing, or behaving this way keep me from being who I am or doing
what I can do?
Once you see what you want, you own it by discerning what is true for you. Discernment is
very different from judgment. As the Observer, we let go of judging and focus on
authenticating what is true for us.
We let go of looking outside ourselves for the answer. Thats because a big part of Owning It is
understanding that You Are The Answer.

Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
When you begin to see yourself as THE CUP, you are ready to Live It!
Living it is where the rubber meets the road. Its where the successful people separate
themselves from the wishful people.
Peter Drucker once said, The best way to predict the future is to create it. Living it is about
taking that consistent action to do what you can do.
Finally, the Evolve It phase is all about the culmination of steps 1 3. When you are seeing
what you want, owning it and doing what you can do, you are living who you are with greater
and greater frequency. This is where everything comes together.
The Evolve It phase is your launching pad. It is the phase where you have generated enough
awareness to be able to choose authentically in a consistent fashion. You are ready to focus on
evolving into your freedom, versus discovering (or remembering) who you are. You can now
act from who you are.
The impact of this realization is to fully bring your unique gifts and strengths into the world.
This cant be understated.
Most people think when they play small and arent living into their greatness that they are only
hurting themselves. How easy is it to let things slide when we think we are the only ones to be
affected?
This couldnt be farther than the truth. The truth of living your conditioning is that you not only
deprive yourself of a more authentic life, you deprive the world and everyone in it of a more
authentic life.
Only you can give what you have to give that unique elixir of gifts and perspective and talent
and love. When you live into your greatness, you are completing your contract with the world.
You are creating a ripple effect, and you never know the exact impact your greatness will have,
person by person, moment by moment.
So when you play small, when you feed your scarcity, you are halting that ripple effect. You are
robbing the world from the exact reason you are here to begin with!

The next section will give you an overview of the Abundance Intelligence system found in my
book, Coaching Into Greatness: 4 Steps to Business and Life. Well start with an overview of the
7 Illusions and Aptitudes, and their corresponding patterns.
The Illusions are the most common sources of scarcity mentality. They are the most frequent
ways people resist being who they are.
Each Illusion has three corresponding Conditioned Patterns. The Conditioned Patterns are the
actual evidence we can look for in a persons thinking, beliefs, and behaviors. Each of the
statements in the Inventory reflects an aspect of the Conditioned Patterns.
Illusion of Not Enough: when an individual believes that they cant trust who they are,
resulting in feelings of being incomplete
More: the belief that something or someone outside of ourselves will complete us
Scriptwriting: projecting an image of ourselves that is not real
Contingency: the need for a condition outside of ourselves to happen for us to do or be
something
Illusion of Comparison: the habit of consistently comparing ourselves to people and things in
the external world to validate our belief of who we are
External Drivers: the interpretation that who you are is dependent on sources outside of
yourself people, circumstances or events
Personalization: consistently taking on the opinions and beliefs of others as the ultimate
truth, even when those beliefs feel contradictory to our inner knowing
Busyness: behavior driven by the belief that our worth is tied to how much we accomplish that
can be seen by others
22

kim@coachingintogreatness.com
Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
Illusion of Struggle: the cycle of resisting, striving and complexity that keeps people from
doing what they can do
Resisting: the pattern of rejecting people, events or things for being anything other than what
we expect them to be
Complexity: when we make things more difficult than they have to be to avoid doing what we
can do
Overachieving: being driven to meet unrealistic expectations that reinforce a false identity
Illusion of Control: when a persons happiness depends on rearranging the world to fit their
idea of how things should be
Caretaking: deriving your identity from transforming others to fit your view of yourself
Role-Playing: the persistent obligation to be who you think the world should see but often
may not be who you are at all
Self-Defense: the need to protect oneself from perceived fearful situations and individuals and
is inherently tied to the belief that good things do not come your way
Illusion of Time: focusing on what you think you dont have instead of on what you do have
Rushing: belief that there is a scarcity of time and opportunity, causing people to focus on
what the think they should do, instead of what they can do
Attachment: needing something or someone to the extent that it limits our Capacity to be
who we are and do what we can do
Distractibility: allowing people, events, emotions and fears to conveniently keep us from
doing what we can do
Illusion of Hope: waiting for other people or events to solve our uneasiness about who we
are
Expectation: the belief that life is supposed to go according to our version of happiness
Powerlessness: feeling trapped, victimized or out of choices in the face of external forces
Assumption: the habit of taking for granted that our view of the world is everyone elses view

kim@coachingintogreatness.com
Doing What You Can Do Action Guide
Illusion of Certainty: the need to know an outcome keeps you from acting, making authentic
decisions and doing what you can do
Complacency: desiring the status quo more than improvement
Tactical Thinking: plotting out straight-line courses through life often using tactics weve
learned from others. This frequently results in excluding other possibilities and options.
Perfectionism: an inability to reach completion due to an endless search for external approval
of ones actions
Just as there are seven Illusions, there are seven Abundance Aptitudes that represent the
abundance mentality side. You could say that the Abundance Aptitudes are the characteristics
of people with high Abundance Intelligence.
For each Abundance Aptitude, there are three corresponding Conscious Patterns. We call these
Conscious Patterns because we consciously choose to practice them based on our skills of
awareness, observation, and choice.
Self-Worth: the belief that you are complete, that you are more than enough exactly as you
are
Capacity: the belief that you already have within you all that you want, need and choose
Greatfulness: a combination of gratitude, appreciation and Capacity that brings the internal
knowing that you are the Cup

What follows is a cheat sheet, if you will. It shows you exactly how the illusions and
conditioned patterns match up with the statements in the Inventory.
This information is extremely helpful as you move into analyzing your results.
The higher the score for a group of statements, the greater the evidence of that Conditioned
Pattern being present in your life. The Inventory measures the frequency of scarcity mentality
in your thinking and behaviors at this moment.
Go back and review your scores. Circle the three highest scoring Illusions. Then circle
your highest scoring Conditioned Patterns. Use the guide below as a reference.

The Abundance Intelligence Inventory measures the frequency of scarcity mentality in your
thinking, beliefs, and behaviors.
The next step in your analysis is to determine the impact of your Illusions and Conditioned
Patterns on your life. In other words, pinpointing the impact on your ability to live
authentically.
The Personal Tipping Point (PTP) is the point where thinking, believing, or behaving a certain
way keeps you from being who you are and doing what you can do.
Just because you scored high on a particular statement in the Inventory doesnt necessarily
mean it is a source of scarcity for you.
For example:
A score of 3 on this statement indicates never getting enough of a good thing occurs frequently
for you. The next step is to determine whether this thought is a source of scarcity (in other
words, when does it keep you from being who you are or doing what you can do).
If you can never get enough of learning, that may not be a source of scarcity. However, if you
just keep taking class after class, getting degree after degree to try to fill your Illusion of Not
Enough or because you are comparing yourself to others, this sounds like a source of scarcity.
It is keeping you from going out and doing what you can do. This Conditioned Pattern of More
is allowing you to hide and play small, rather than going out into the world with your gifts.
This is where the PTP comes in. Listening to the PTP laser call audios will help cement this
concept for you.

Inventory results, you are ready to create your Declaration.
What is an Abundant Declaration? It is a public promise of who you are being in the world and
the larger contribution you are making.
