Biology Units and Learning Targets

Semester 1 - Biology A

Unit 1 - The Science of Biology - Scientific Inquiry and Data Interpretation

Learning Target

1. I can construct an investigation utilizing the scientific method and good


experimental design (problem, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis and
conclusions, communication, independent and dependent variables, constants,
controls.)
2. I can apply the International System of Units to take measurements and convert
measurements.
3. I can apply the characteristics of life in order to determine whether an
organism/object is living.

Unit 2 - Biochemistry

Learning Target

1. I can identify properties of matter and justify their importance to life.


2. I can explain how the structure of water contributes to its properties (properties of
water, water is a solvent, pH scale and buffers.)
3. I can compare and contrast the four groups of macromolecules.
4. I can explain and analyze energy changes in chemical reactions and the role of
enzymes in living things.

Unit 3 - Cell Structure and Function

Learning Target

1. I can defend how technology has affected the timeline of the cell theory.
2. I can compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
3. I can create a model that shows understanding of basic cell structure.
4. I can classify forms of transport within a cell and defend the importance and
basis of diffusion and osmosis.

Unit 4 - Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, and Fermentation

Learning Target
1. I can develop and use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light
energy into stored chemical energy.
2. I can develop and use a model to illustrate how cellular respiration is used
resulting in a net transfer of energy.
3. I can demonstrate understanding of the cyclical nature of photosynthesis and
cellular respiration.
4. I can explain fermentation (alcohol and lactic acid) and justify the role of each in
the metabolism of different organisms.

Unit 5 - Cell Growth and Division

Learning Target
1. I can model mitosis and discuss its importance in cell growth and development.
2. I can compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.
3. I can differentiate between possible benefits and issues associated with stem cell
research.
