COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy
skills that students need for success in secondary school and daily life. Students will study and create a
variety of informational, literary, and graphic texts. An important focus will be on the consolidation of
strategies and processes that help students interpret texts and communicate clearly and effectively. This
course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 11 college or workplace preparation
course.
Prerequisite: Grade 9 English, Academic or Applied (ENG1D or ENG1P)

EVALUATION
The final mark for the course is comprised of 70% term work and 30% summative mark. The
summative mark will come from a summative oral/media task, and a final exam.

ASSESSMENT METHODS
A variety of assessment tools will be used to help students learn, evaluate their learning and demonstrate their learning.
These tools may include quizzes, response journals, reading comprehension activities and questions, discussions, group
work, and short writing pieces. Daily homework will include reading, finishing daily work and/or continuing work on
larger assignments.

EVALUATION METHODS
Major evaluations will include (but are not limited to): Formal tests and quizzes, formal writing assignments, creative
writing assignments, oral presentations, and media analysis and creation. There will also be minor evaluations in addition
to the major evaluations which will also be used to help determine students abilities to achieve the course expectations.

COMMUNICATION
We encourage frequent communication between parents/guardian and the teacher. The teacher will contact parents as
needed to improve the educational opportunities of the student. Parents or students may contact the teacher at (613) 733-
