CHAPTER 3

LIGHTING

INTRODUCTION
Lighting is used to illuminate the cockpit area, all flight instruments, the entrance, the
cabin are a, the nose compartment, and the baggage areas. The majority of the instru-
ments are internally lighted. The overhead switch panel and circuit-breaker panels are
electroluminescent. For general illumination, floodlights are used. The standard warn-
ing signs are provided for the cabin area. Exterior lighting consists of navigation, strobe,
rotating beacon, wing ice inspection, landing, taxi, logo, and recognition lights.

Instrument panellighting is controlled with a
switch on the overhead panel labeled DIM,
OFF, BRT, and a group of rheostats located
near the switch (Figure 3-1). Exact position-
ing and rheostat configuration varies with the
airplane year group; however, operation is es-
sentiaIly the same for aIl airplanes.

When the DIM-OFF-BRT switch is in BRT,
aIl panellights illuminate at fuIl intensity. In
DIM, the rheostats control the intensity for as-
sociated panellights. In OFF, aIl panellights
are extinguished.

A single dome light is located in the overhead

between the two pilots' seats. The push-button
switch is located just forward of the light as-
sembly (Figure 3-2). This light is operational
with the BATTERY MASTER switch turned
off.

Map reading lights are instaIled on the lower

surface ofthe overhead switch paneljust above
each pilot's seat. A collocated toggle switch
controls map light operations (Figure 3-3). Figure 3-3. Map Light Controls

The nose compartment is equipped with a

courtesy light for night loading. Since this
light illuminates automatically when the bag-
gage compartment door is opened regardless
of the position of the BATTERY MASTER
switch, it is recommended that the door not be
left open for extended periods as this may
