OBJECTIVE: By the end of this group, participants will increase their awareness of the causes and effects of violence and learn that violence is preventable. HRS: 1 Hour MATERIALS: Cards, activity sheets, pens and pencils.
Students will increase their awareness of
the causes and effects of violence and of their own risk of becoming victims of INTRODUCTION homicide. Students will also learn that 5 MINS anger is a normal emotion and it can be expressed in constructive ways. Also discuss the concept of the No-Snitching street code. Wink Murder Ask the group to sit in a circle. Choose a number of playing cards to match the number of students in the ICEBREAKER group. Be certain your selection of cards 15 MINS contains an ace. Each person draws a card. They must not comment or show it to anyone else. The player who chooses the ace is the murderer and he/she kills his victims by winking at them. The object is to identify the murderer while trying not to be killed in the process. An incorrect guess results in instant death. Wakeup Call Youth will read a section from the Making It Book about violence and ways to prevent it. ACTIVITY Putting Aside Beef Youth will fill out an 35 MINS activity sheet about positively solving personal differences. Codes of the Streets In a discussion format, the group will answer questions about their knowledge of street codes and how they affect people. Facilitator will recap important or the most talked about topics with the group before dismissal. RECAP 5 MINS
