TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The readings today are a little tricky! I could say a lot about
the last sentence in the Gospel: For where two or three meet
in my name, I shall be there with them. These are very
encouraging words from Jesus. To know that when we gather
in his name, he is here with us, what a magnificent truth.

But to be true to Jesus words, we need to reflect on what he is saying about healing
divisions in our relationships, whether its family or parish community.

There are times when we need to confront someone who is doing wrong. Jesus sets out a
formula and gives clear directives not easy, but necessary for reconciliation. Jesus says
that the offended parts, not the offending one, should first seek reconciliation. This means
honest confrontation. It is not to humiliate he person, but to be reconciled with him or her.
In fact we have a duty to do so. Failure to do so shows a lack of love for the person. In the
process we should examine our own conscience to see if maybe we are not partly to blame.
Confrontation takes courage and involves risks. But sometimes a little honest talking may
clear the air.

If this approach fails, Jesus tells us take one or two others along with you, the evidence of
two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. If you fail in this, then we are in
trouble and into the public arena. As you can see, this is a very touchy topic, but yet so
necessary. The same formula should be worked on national and international arenas.
Peaceful negotiations are better than making war or making and selling weapons of war as
have been happening at the ExCel building this week. Will we ever learn?

REPLACEMENT? A number of people have been asking if there is a replacement for Fr.
Damian. No, there isnt. So we are back to where we were this time last year. We appreciate
all that Fr. Damian brought to us during the last twelve months. I must confess I am a little
concerned about the future. I am not getting any younger. In any other job, I would be
retired by now. We can put whatever religious spin on it, but the sad thing is, my work
load now is greater than when I was in my 20s and 30s. There is something not exactly
right there! I am not looking for sympathy its the last thing I want. But I am looking for
patience, understanding and the continual help that so many are giving. Thank you for your
patience and the good Lord will take care of all of us!
