Technology

INTRODUCTION: What This Core Competency Is and Why It Is Important

Every day in society people are making improvements. Today we are using cutting edge
technology to improve every aspect of our daily lives and in business professions. For
instance in today's society the fields of Communication are constantly advancing and
more and more new ways to communicate are being invented.

Technology has helped increase the speed of communication and decrease its cost. However,
at the same time it has caused people to become more impersonal with each other. In earlier
times the major form of communication was for people to visit each other and go to public
meeting places. One of the next major advances was the telephone. Due to the telephone
people no longer went to the public meeting places as often as they used to. As time goes on,
new advances still allow people to contact and communicate with each other more easily.

These advances such as faxes, beepers, and email, although seemingly making life easier,
each help todecrease the earlier forms of communication.

In some businesses email is the main way of communication because its quick, they have
record of the conversation, andcan almost access it anywhere.

People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that
technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend
the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could
have been several hundred years ago. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an
extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is
good or bad, but rather how we as humans use it.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IS A TOOL, NOT AN END UNTO ITSELF. IT IS BOTH

DIFFICULT TO IMPLEMENT AND TO MANAGE. WITH ITS USE CAN COME CONFLICTS
ABOUT BUDGETS, ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONS, ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY,
PROCESSES, AND PROCEDURES, AND EVEN THE BEST WAY TO PROCESS CASES.
DESPITE THESE POTENTIAL CONFLICTS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CLEARLY CAN
IMPROVE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND COURT PERFORMANCE THROUGH INSTANT,
INTEGRATED, AND LINKED INFORMATION.

Correct judicial decisions require timely, complete, and accurate information. When
Information Technology delivers on its promise, the right people are more likely than not
able to get the information they need, at the right time, and in the right format. Because of
its potential both to improve and to entangle the judiciary, court leaders must take
responsibility for the use of technology in their courts. Direction, policy decisions, and
management oversight of Information Technology cannot be left solely to technical staff.
Court leaders must ensure that technology serves the courts purposes and that it is managed
effectively.

Much is at stake. With a click of their mouse, users can move with ease through data and
information that formerly was dispersed in fragmented and often poorly designed electronic
systems, libraries, and paper records. This improves justice, increases efficiency, and
empowers end users and increases their morale.
But new technology alone will not improve inefficient work processes. The new electronic
system must be well designed. The information delivered to end users must be accurate.
The end users must know both what they are trying to do and how to do it. When
Information Technology is applied skilfully, communication and decisions, both judicial and
managerial, can be improved.

Through technology, judges can bring together relevant case histories and documents,
communicate with attorneys and social service...

Currently we are faced with a period of time that heavily revolves around technology. Now
we live in a society that is very over dependent and relies heavily on technology to complete
its tasks. Since technology has come into our lives we feel that now we could never live
without it. This shows the high degree of expectations and faith in technology that is apparent
everywhere around us. Technology was once considered a luxury, now it is a necessity. There
are two methods of coping with technological change: accept it and implement it or oppose it
and try to stop its progress.
There are many positive reasons why our society should accept and implement technology.
Technology has advanced our societies health care with the discovery of new treatments to
certain diseases (Daniels 2002). This improvements seen in Chemotherapy which acts as
treatment for cancer. Not only is the medical world improving through technology the
communication systems world wide are upgrading. Important information can be sent around
the world by a press of a button. The Internet has totally revolutionized the modern world.
With the invention of the Internet we are internationally connected to people all over the
world.
More importantly we should take into consideration the negative effects that technology can
have. These negatives give us reasons why we should oppose this abundance of technological
change. It introduces a change that temporarily disables a society. Technological determinism
is a theory that suggests that change is not necessarily initiated by the individual, but by
technology (Bain 2002, 122). Technology has greatly effected and altered our society.
There are many negative aspects of technology such as over dependence, discrimination
towards older generations and the exploitation of privacy.

Over dependence on technology is detrimental to society and contributes to the negative

aspect of technology. Furthermore we are doomed to be dependent on technology as long...

Technology has helped us enhanced our lives in many different ways. Many different
products have been invented to help us establish simpler ways to solve different problems.
We have seen different technology products developed over time and one that I know that has
had a large impact on this country are computers. This technology has increased as the years
have past.
Computers were created in the mid 20th century and were the size of a large room. As time
passed on they grew smaller and smaller. Today we have computers in our homes and
businesses that we you use for many different reasons. They have increased our knowledge
and communication skills. They have also given us a chance to be world-wide using the
internet. Going world-wide was a big invention, because we can know see what goes on
around the world with a click of a button.
This technology has given children in school a chance to enhance their levels of knowledge.
They are now able to research subjects and get the answers without using the encyclopedia.
Computers have also given kids the benefit of using different software to help with different
learning skills from language to mathematical skills. This is a technology invention that has
improved education tremendously.
As adults we also use computers to go to school, but also to enhance our knowledge about
different things. A place were most adults can vouch for where computers are used greatly is
in the workplace. Computers in the workplace have been put into place to cut down on paper
work. For example, we use computers to clock in and out of work. A lot of businesses find it
easier to keep track of things on the computer than having a large amount of paperwork.
Computers have enhanced our lives tremendously from going to school to being at work.
They have cut down the production of paper being made, but they are worth it. No matter
how much they cost, people still have one. The best advice I can give is to get one and you
will see how it will...

Technology Changes

Provide two examples of how technology is changing your life daily. How might these
changes reflect the trends discussed in the readings and the text? Do you think these trends
are permanent, and, if so, what steps will you need to make to better prepare yourself for the
future?

Information technology continues to play a vital role in the manner in which we communicate
in the 21st century, especially with people living in other parts of the world. Foe example,
prior to the discovery of the internet (email), it took weeks, and sometimes a month before I
would receive traditional mail from my relatives living in Liberia. However, with the
internet I can now hear from my relatives every week and sometimes several times in one
day.

In addition to the internet, video teleconferencing is another advantage of how technology is

making a positive impact in my life. For example, with video teleconferencing I can now
have live communication and interaction with several people at different locations at the
same time. As a trainer, this form of technology makes my life easier as it reduces my travel
time to these locations, and saves my organization thousands of training dollars.

These changes are unique in the way businesses are being conducted today, and are expected
to continue as technology continues to improve. In order to prepare myself to meet the
future technological advances, I my must learn how to use technology, as well as keep up
with its trends and changes.
Technology - Good Or Bad?

People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that
technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend
the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could
have been several hundred years ago. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an
extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is
good or bad, but rather how we as humans use it.For decades now, television has been
accused of contributing to the dissolution of the American family and the destruction of the
minds of those who watch it. However, although the TV has been involved in this, the
problem roots not with technology but rather the people who choose to let it run their lives. I
believe this because it is parents, not TV sets, who choose to let their children sit in front of
the television for hours upon hours, and it is the parents who do not intervene and replace TV
time with quality family time. Technology has also been blamed for destroying the minds of
adults who spend too much time watching it, but in fact, the blame should lie on what
programs a person watches or the person who chooses to watch it continuously. Hence, the
television is only a contributing factor in family problems and mind destruction. It is the bad
judgment of the people who watch television or let their children watch it who should be
blamed for these harms, not technology.Another topic that comes to mind when technology is
discussed is the household appliances that have evolved in the last century. Refrigerators, gas
and electric ovens, microwaves, vacuums, dishwashers....the list goes on and on. All these
things have made housework tremendously easier than it would have been about 100 years
ago. This results with both positive and negative effects. It has given us easier ways to get
jobs done, leaving more time for other things, but the bad part of this is what...

Effects Of Technology

Technology has a large effect on our lives. It surrounds todays modern society and is
available nearly everywhere. It influences minds in good and bad, affecting our young
children and adolescents. This may be potentially harmful. Technology is used as another
form of communication and exchange of information which was not available to man years
before. Its impacted us by change in how safe, healthy and happy people feel. Technology
has changed our everyday lives with business, education and leisure time activities and no
computers are becoming a part of everyday life.

Computers are used for various reasons in the working force and even at home. They may
cause issues in the workplace such as mechanical errors or loss and may give some the ability
to hack into important private information. Not knowing who might have access to it and
what is it being used for is a common issue with in the workplace. Identity theft can ruin
someones credit and it can be unnerving knowing that you and your familys personal
information is out there in someone elses hands.

Children are becoming more and more influenced by outside information as technology
progresses. What used to be the main concern, with the availability of information through
technology, Pornography is no longer in the spotlight. More explicit information and/or
graphics are out there today. A young teen dealing with mental and emotional issues might
find how to build a bomb out of household materials through research on the internet. Not to
mention anyone else like an ex-boyfriend, mentally unstable person or a fellow co-worker.
Contrary to everything that I have just mentioned, not all advances in technology are harmful.
It Changed Our Lives?

The premise is that information technology has arguably been the

most significant driver of change in our lives and will continue to be so for at least
the next several decades.
That statement is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth as I see it!!!
Technology has transformed every aspect of my life from a social standpoint, a career
standpoint and most importantly a communication standpoint, It has me excited and
scared at the same time for our future and where we are heading.
From a social standpoint, I remember as a child I played with Barbie dolls and we
went outside to play with friends (as a group). It was what solidified our friendships and
made us feel like we were part of our community. Now I see my 14 year old on gaming
systems alone. Once in awhile with 1 friend to compete against but mostly alone. My
teenager doing his homework, texting and IMing, all simultaneously. And if I dare say,
its a beautiful day, why dont you go out and play? I get a puzzled look and the,
theres nothing to do out there statement. Nothing to do? There were things to do before
video games and computers and honestly I think it was a lot better for them socially.
They dont see a need any more for human interaction and that worries me. Not to mention
the need to keep up with the Joness. If every kid in school has a cell phone at age
12 and your child doesnt, he feels like hes poor or his parents are just mean. Kids want
to be connected 24/7 now and its obvious that the consumer economy is helping push
this epidemic by making everything smaller, more efficient and even faster for kids (and
adults) to want them more. Just look at any Wal-Mart store the day after Thanksgiving
and see what customers are literally fighting for.
From a career standpoint, it was a positive influence because when I was in high
school (in 1990), we barely saw or used a computer and we still learned to type on a
typewriter. I had no intentions on going to...

Technology And Happiness

Technology has changed our lives but, has it made our lives any better? Some believe
technology makes people happier because, people always want to upgrade their electronics to
new, more efficient pieces of equipment. People have been progressing for thousands of
years, and we still are. Researchers are always looking to improve current technology and
come up with modern, efficient devices to improve our lives. If society were to stop
emerging with new inventions, I feel we would be very unhappy. I believe that the leading
edge of technology is what makes us happy.
The microwave is a prime example of technology making us happy. If we were to get rid
of the microwave, many people would be angry because it is a very helpful and time saving
device. If there was no microwave people would not be able to defrost the ground meat they
forgot to leave out, nor would they be able to cook a hot pocket for lunch when they were
short on time. Some people believe that items that are efficient make society happy.
Technology is, in some forms, directly related to happiness. Simple devices have been
developed to make almost every aspect of life easier. Remote controls, laptop computers,
palm pilots, and cellular phones are just a few examples of how technology is able to make
life easier. People who own a new high grade computers are glad to have them because
computers make simple task in life easier, as a result taking away stress. A lot of modern
technology is taken for granted, but without theses devices, people would surely feel the loss
since their lives would be more stressful, so today's technological devices truly do make up
happier, or keep us happy.
There are hundreds of hobbies and jobs that exist because of modern technology. There are
hobbies and jobs for all ages and taste that would not exist if it were not for the help of
modern technology. If it were not for modern technology people could not play video games
or listen to music. Imagine if we...

How Technology Affect Our Normal Lives

Throughout time mankind has strived to make his life easier. Whether it be through
technology, science, or theories of social interaction every generation has made one
contribution. From the idea of crop rotation to the cellular telephone mankind has advanced.
It can be argued however, that not all of these advancements were beneficial. Many times
people are accused of taking the easy way out, something that is looked down upon in
todays society.
Consider, if you will, ancient Greecian Society. With hardly any of the technological or
scientific advancements we have today, they were able to produce some of the greatest
thinkers of all time. Socrates and Plato still influence modern philosophical thought. In
addition, these men were well versed in all disciplines. They were thinkers, mathamaticians,
writers, scientists, artists and much more. Examine some other great men in history.
Leonardo Davinci was one of the greatest scientists and also one of the greatest artists of all
time, he even invented and drew up early plans for the helicopter. These ancient men, without
the technology and ease of life we have today, were able to produce some of the most prolific
additions to human knowledge ever.
Now let us examine some men from our time. Bill Gates, while adding immensely to the
pleasures and ease of mans life, did so only by forcefully destroying many fledgling
companies and completely undermining our capitalistic market place. Very very few men in
our time are leaders in more than one discipline. There are no scientists/artists or
writer/mathamaticians. Men, while being able to more deeply delve into a discipline, are now
restricted to it. I attribute this to technology. We now have a life outside of our work. A life
with computers, cars, movies, and dinner with the family from across the country. Mankind
can no longer devote himself to his work. He has his work life, and his home life. While a
cell phone allows me to talk to anyone from anywhere, it prevents...
