FREEMASONS "OUTED" BY MPS' REPORT

AreportbytheHouseofCommonsHomeAffairsSelectCommittee,
publishedon25May,entitledFreemasonryinPublicLife,has
concludedthatmembersoftheFreemasonBrotherhoodwithin
policeforcesinEnglandandWalesmayhaveplayeda
significantroleintheStalkeraffairinthemid1980sanda
seriesofmiscarriagesofjusticeinvolvingWestMidlands
SeriousCrimeSquad(WMSCS),whichwasdisbandedamid
allegationsofcorruptionin1989.

Thereportistheresultofatwoyearinvestigation,chairedbyChris
Mullin,MP,andrecommendsthatHomeSecretary,JackStraw,establish
Masonicmembershipregistersforthepoliceafteronly3of43police
forcesinEnglandandWalesbotheredtoreassurethepublicand
openregistersonavoluntarybasis.TheMPsontheallparty
committeealsoproposedthattheHomeOfficepublishthenames
ofthousandsofmagistrates,crownprosecutorsandjudgeswho
havefailedtodisclosethattheyaremembersofthe
Brotherhoodorothersecretsocieties,pointingoutthatonly7
membersoftheCrownProsecutionService(CPS),outof2,097
questioned,admittedtheywereMasonswhile48percentrefused
todiscloseordenylinks.
