Learning Styles Reflection

After taking the learning styles survey, I learned that I am a visual, applied, spatial,

social, and creative learner. But what are those? A visual learner has strengths with visual modes

of learning-reading, studying, pictures, reading diagrams and graphs when trying to learn a new

concept. An applied learner prefers to real objects and situations. They like to use practical, real-

life examples when applying their new knowledge. A spatial learner is able to use visualize and

mentally see how things work. They could be good at drawing, assembling, or repairing things.

A social learner prefers to work directly with classmates and instructors. They are people-

orientated and enjoying interacting with others in the classroom. Lastly, a creative learner is

imaginative, have innovative and are not afraid to take risks. They prefer to learn through

discovery or experimentation when learning new concepts or ideas.

It is important to know our students learning style, especially an English Language

Learner (ELL) student because it can make teaching run smoother and more efficient. If the

teacher knows the a specific student learns better visual than auditory, the teacher should use

more pictures or diagram so they can visualize the concept and remember it better when they

need the information. Knowing each students learning style can make the learning easier for the

students and less frustrating, which will make them want to learn instead of give up when they

cant understand the way they are being taught. Therefore, teachers should teach in all styles of

learning so they hit every students learning style and each student has a chance of learning to

the best of their ability.

Students, specifically, ELL students can have distinct advantages when using their

specific learning styles, especially during the students transition to a new school and

environment. If an ELL student had the same learning styles as I have, their way of learning

could be come much easier because it would be playing off of the students strengths instead of

their weaknesses. If their teachers decided to use more of a visual approach on teaching, the ELL

student would find it easier to learn, study, and understand diagrams and graphs since they dont

have to decode words to try and figure out what they mean.

The same would be if the teacher used applied teaching style. The ELL student would be

receiving real life examples that he or she could apply to their new knowledge. Also if the

teacher used a spatial approach and used visuals to show directions, the ELL student would be

able to follow along better instead of trying to decode the words and could possibly be confused

or do the instructions wrong.

Using a social learning style could be beneficial to the ELL student since they could be

partnered with other students that can help each other. This style can be useful as long as its not

used too much because we dont want it to become a crutch for the ELL student and except

someone to help them every lesson.

Lastly, using a creative learning style in the classroom with an ELL student can allow

them to discover or experiment on their own so that they can determine what they are learning on

their own and in their own words. These learning styles can be useful in the classroom and it is

important to learn what each of our students learning styles are in order to give them the best

education possible.
