A Knit Hat with Colorwork Motifs

Pandamonium is a hat knit in the round from the
bottom up. The hat starts with a 2x2 rib and then
continues with an adorable panda colorwork
pattern. This whimsical hat continues with an ombre
effect as the color changes from one shade to
another.
One size - fits an average adult head
18 inches (46 cm) in diameter (unstretched).
9 inches (24 cm) from edge (turned up) to crown.
26 stitches and 22 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) in
colorwork pattern (after blocking).

US Size 6 (4 mm) sixteen inch circular needles
US Size 7 (4.5 mm) sixteen inch circular needles and
US Size 7 (4.5 mm) Double Pointed Needles (DPNs)
Cascade 220 Superwash (100% Superwash Wool,
100 g/3.5 oz, 220 yards/200 meters, 20-22 stitches =
4 (10 cm) with US 6-7 (4.0-4.5mm) needles
Color A - Gray (816): 1 skein
Color B - White (871): 1 skein
Color C Black (815): 1 skein
Color D Caribbean (847): 1 skein
Note: I used approximately skein of Color A, 1/3
skein of Color B, skein of Color C and skein of
Color D in the sample shown. (Your results may differ
based on tension or needle size).
Stitchmarker, Scissors, Tapetry Needle,
OPTIONAL Pom-Pom Maker or Pre-Made Pom-Pom

increased)
k2tog - knit 2 together
2 x 2 Rib *(k2, p2) Continue from * to end of row

With US Size 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles, cast on 96
stitches with a stretchy cast-on. (I used the Long Tail
Cast-On.) Join in the round, being careful not to
twist stitches. Place stitchmarker to mark beginning
of row.
Begin 2 x 2 rib for 24 rows.
On the next row: *( kfb, k3) repeat from * to end of
row. Twenty-four (24) stitches increased. 120 total
stitches.
Switch to US Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles and
begin Chart A. Chart A is worked from right to left
and is then repeated seven more times in each
round. (Eight repeats total).
Note: Carry the floats every 5-6 stitches
when knitting the panda colorwork section.

Begin Chart B. Chart B is worked from right to left
and is then repeated eleven more times in each
row. (Twelve repeats total). Switch to DPNs as
needed. Twelve (12) stitches remain after the final
row of Chart B.
Break yarn leaving a 12 inch string. Draw through
remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends on
wrong side. Block as needed.
Optional: If adding a pom pom, make pom pom
according to pom pom maker instructions and attach
securely to hat after blocking or attach a pre-made
pom pom securely to the hat after blocking. (Colors
B and D were used to make the pom pom in the
sample shown).
