Karnataka is a state in south western region of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956, with
the passage of the States Reorganisation Act. Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was
renamed Karnataka in 1973. Karnataka is bordered by the Arabian Sea and the Laccadive Seato
the west, Goa to the north west, Maharashtra to the north, Telangana to the North east, Andhra
Pradesh to the east, Tamil Nadu to the south east, and Kerala to the south west. The state covers
an area of 191,976 square kilometres (74,122 sq mi), or 5.83 per cent of the total geographical
area of India. It is the seventh largest Indian state by area.

PM Modi inaugurated Indian Science Congress in Mysuru


Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 103rd Indian Science Congress in
Mysore,Karnataka. The event is being held at the University of Mysore from January 3 to 7.
Theme Science & Technology for Indigenous Development in India
The Indian Science Congress is being hosted in Karnataka after 13 years and in Mysuru
after 34 years.
As part of Indian Science Congress, the Children Science Congress inaugurated by Nobel
Laureate John B Gurdon (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012) at the amphitheatre,
Manasagangothri inside the Mysore university campus.

Mangaluru Airport conferred as best in the country


Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved the fifth rank in terms of customer
satisfaction and handling among the 53 two-tier airports in the country. The internal survey
was done by a private agency for the Airports Authority of India. The 53 airports had handled
upto 15 lakh passengers a year.
The rank was based on the customer satisfaction survey conducted during July to
December period 2015.

Bengaluru to Get Indias First Space Park


As part of Make in India initiative, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided
to open a 100 acre Space Park in Bengaluru where private industries would be allowed to take
up manufacturing of space system related components.
Also India will be the first country to have a high altitude polar landing
of Chandrayaan 2 and it will have three components orbiter, Lander and rover to study
the lunar surface. The mission is scheduled to be launched 2017-18.

Mysuru sat at top in Swachh Survekshan 2016


Minister of Urban Development M.Venkaiah Naidu released the results of Swachh
Survekshan-2016 of 73 major cities that were surveyed for sanitation last month.
As per results, Mysuru led the list as the cleanest city in the country while Dhanbad has
been ranked at the bottom.

About Karnataka Mobile One m-governance model :
This is one of the biggest e-governance applications in the world, to win gold.
It will bring over 4,000 services including government and private integrated platform.
These apps can be accessed on smartphones a web portal or through SMS and IVRS.
This app has been commended as Indias first M-governance model and there are
plans at the Centre to swish it to the national level.

Karnataka Bank bags award


Karnataka Bank Ltd has bagged IBA Banking Technology Award in the category of Best
Risk and Fraud Management Initiative Runner Up among the small banks.
The bank said the award was announced as part of Indian Banks Association (IBA)

Manipal University had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for academic

Education World University rankings.

Union Home Minister chairs High Level Committee meeting for Central assistance to Karnataka,

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting attended by various portfolio
of Ministers of the High Level Committee (HLC) has granted a Central Assistance of Rs
842.7 crore to Karnataka, Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected
by drought and floods.
The proposals from the Union government is based on the report of the Central Team
which visited Karnataka, affected by drought, and Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh
affected by floods.
The committee approved the assistance Karnataka will get the tune of Rs 723.23crore
while Rs 35.14 crore for Puducherry and Rs 84.33 crore for Arunachal Pradesh.

Bengaluru Tops The Chart Of Online Learning In India: Coursera business standard
Open online education provider Coursera revealed How the World Learns: Spotlight on the
India info graphic highlighting data on online learners in India as the trend of e-learning
becomes more widely adopted in India.
Facts in the Findings:
i. Top Countries:India is the third largest online market with 1.3 million learners Out of
Courseras 18 million registered learners, while the list is topped by the US followed by China.
ii. Top Cities: Bengaluru emerged as the top city in India for online learning with the highest
number of registered learners, followed by Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.
iii. Top Course: Nearly half of learners in India are in technology courses such as computer
science accounts 25% and data science -18 %.

Gangavati to get Asias first Rice Technology Park


i. Karnataka government has decided establish the Asias first Rice Technology Park at
Gangavati in Koppal district and a Maize Technology Park at Ranebennur in Haveri district.

Corporation Bank gets Excellence Award on Empowering MSMEs 2016


i. Mangalore based Corporation Bank has been awarded with Excellence Award on Empowering
MSMEs 2016. Bank MD and CEO Jai Kumar Garg received the award from Kalraj Mishra,
Union Minister for MSMEs, in New Delhi.
ii. The award is instituted by the Federation of Industry, Trade and Services [FITS].
Steps taken by the Corporation Bank:
The bank ensures collateral-free loans up to Rs. 1 crore under Credit Guarantee Scheme of
CGTMSE and bears the cost of guarantee cover for loans up to Rs. 10 lakh.
Corporation Bank is offering 25 bps concessions in interest rate to women beneficiaries in
addition to 50 bps concession available to guarantee covered accounts.
Corporation Bank has also adopted Environment and Social Risk Framework guidelines of
World Bank/SIDBI for SME borrowers to make MSMEs lending environmentally sustainable

i. Mangaluru based Karnataka Bank was awarded with the CFBP Jamnalal Bajaj Award for
Fair Business Practices under the category Service EnterprisesLarge in Mumbai.
ii. The award was constituted by the CFPB under four categoriesviz, Manufacturing, Services,
Trade and Distribution and Charitable Association.

Kannada film Thithi wins best film award at Shanghai International Film Festival
i. Kannada film Thithi has won the Best Film and Best Script Writers Award at the
ongoing 19th Shanghai International Film Festival in Shanghai.
ii. The film Thithi was directed by Raam Reddys and it is about 3 generations reacting to the
death of the oldest in the clan.
iii. The film has earlier bagged 2016 National Award for Best Feature film in Kannadaand
also won three awards at the Karnataka State Film Awards. The film was also selected for 2016
New Directors/New Films in New York.

NK Chari is the new State Bank of Mysore MD


i.N.K.Chari took charge as the new Managing Director of State Bank of Mysore. Prior to his
new appointment, he was the Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India with an immediate
effect from 30th May.
ii. Chari had served as the Chief Operating Officer in National Banking Group of State Bank of
India. He has also headed the Mid Corporate Vertical of State Bank of India.

Karnataka Bank former chairman MS Krishna Bhat passes away


i. The former Chairman of Karnataka Bank MS Krishna Bhat has died in Mangaluru. He was 78.
Krishna had joined the bank in 1970, and was elevated to the position of General Manager in
1989. He became the Chief General Manager of the bank in 1994.
ii. Krishna Bhat took over as the Chairman in 1995, for a period of two years. This was
extended for another three years up to 2000.
iii. During his tenure as the chairman, the paid-capital and owned funds of the Bank increased
gone up significantly also registered a growth rate much higher than the industry growth
rate and Computerization of the operations began.
iv. The bank also achieved the highest P1 rating for its certificate of deposits from CRISIL.

Karnataka joins Andhra and Telangana, to tap NRIs for start-ups


i.Karnataka is mulling to tap non-resident Kannadigas to set up start-ups and technology
units in its revised start-up policy, reflecting the efforts by rival states Telangana and Andhra
Pradesh. The state capital is Indias start-up hub, with nearly a third of new firms being set up in
the city.
ii.The move is also aimed at building a bridge with influential technology and business
leaders from the community in the US and West Asia for more investments.
iii.The state government is focusing on incubating start-ups that use technology in
agriculture, horticulture, housing and transport.

Karnataka government sets up a dedicated Start-up Cell


The Karnataka government has set up a dedicated Start-up Cell to fuel the implementation
of the initiatives under the Start up policy.
i. The department of Information technology and Bio technology of Karnataka, for the first
time, has got all sphere degree solutions for the startup initiatives and more importantly its much
required direct intervention to the startups though the open house.
ii. In 2016-17, the Department of IT and BT would have special focus on further strengthening
the idea of innovation and leveraging to give impetus to the growth of startups through
its startup policy 2015-2020.

i. According to the higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds, Bengaluru based IISC
secured Sixth Rank. Also the institute is the Indias top representative in the BRICS ranking list.

reason that the list extends up to 250 from 200 last year .

Karnataka Banks solar initiative for rural students


i. Mangalore based Karnataka Bank has started a programme to offer solar lights in the non-
electrified houses of students in rural zones.
ii. This is joint iniative of lender with the Manipal-based non-governmental organisation Bharatiya
Vikas Trust (BVT) under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) route.
iii. To illuminate two lights in a house total cost of a unit is Rs. 9,500. While the house holder
pays Rs. 4,500, the bank bears the remaining cost.

Bengaluru-based Startup Launches Indias First Smart Glucometer for Diabetics


i. Bengaluru based start-up Cooey Technologies has released Indias first IOT Glucometer that
wirelessly syncs data with a smartphone by combining user-centric design and smart technology.
ii. The Smart Glucometer is compact also pocket-sized device that is portable, connects to a
smartphone using the 3.5mm headphone jack and transfers the readings automatically into the
Cooey application.

Niranjan wins eight medals in IWAS World Games


i. Bengaluru hailed para swimmer Niranjan Mukundan has bagged eight medals, that covers
three golds, at the recently-concluded IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee
Sports) U-23 World Games in Prague, Czech Republic.
ii. Niranjans clinched gold medals in 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, silver
in 100m fly and 50m freestyle, as also bronze in 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 100m
backstroke events, that is supporting Niranjan through the Para Champions Programme.

HUPA approves construction of over 37,000 houses for urban poor
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) headed by Shri M. Venkaiah
Naidu approved construction of 37,013 houses for the urban poor in Karnataka and Haryana
with central assistance of Rs 569 crore.
Total Outlay :
i. Rs 1,468 crore to construct 36,254 houses in Karnataka
ii. Rs 23 crore to construct 759 houses in Haryana

Union HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar unveiled IIT Dharwad in Karnataka


i. Union Human Resource Development MinisterPrakash Javdekar formally launched IIT
Dharwad chapter in Dharwad in Karnataka.
ii. Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier
engineering and technology university located in Dharwad.
iii. The new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Dharwad would start functioning from July,
2016 in a temporary campus housed at Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in
Belur village on the outskirts of Dharwad city.
iv. For the academic year 2016-2017, it will offer B.Tech courses in three core branches
namely Electrical, Computer Science and Mechanical.

Bengaluru to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2017


i. IT-BT capital of the country, Bengaluru, will host the 2017 Bharatiya Pravasi Divas. It is
scheduled to take place on February 7, 8 and 9 of 2017.

ii. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas(English:Non-Resident Indian Day), is celebrated in India on 9


January each year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development
of India.
iii. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Bombay on 9
January 1915. Established in 2003, it is sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian
Affairs of the government of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (FICCI) the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) and the Ministry of
Development of the North Eastern Region of India.
iv. A celebratory event is held on 79 January each year in an Indian city: a forum for issues
concerning the Indian Diasporais organized and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are
given.

Corporation Bank unveils its Group Credit Life Insurance Scheme in Mangalore
In a pilot basis, Corporation bank has launched group credit life insurance scheme in
Mangalore on August 4. This move attributes to increase the insurance cover of the growing
population and also strengthen its borrowing community.
Life-based contracts tend to fall into two major categories:
Protection policies designed to provide a benefit, typically a lump sum payment, in the
event of specified event. A common form of a protection policy design is term insurance.
Investment policies where the main objective is to facilitate the growth of capital by
regular or single premiums. Common forms (in the U.S.) are whole life, universal life, and
variable life policies.
Corporation Bank Group Insurance:-
The scheme is exclusively to cover the customers in the age group of 18-60 years who have
taken
term loans from the bank.
It will be payable to the person , in the event of death of the borrower and it is a single premium
group term insurance plan offering insurance cover to the loan taken by the customer.

Syndicate Bank launches Project Ananya to improve Digital Banking Services


i. Syndicate Bank has adopted a large scale transformation program called Project
Ananya that focuses on improved customer service and offering latest indigital banking services.
ii. The bank plans to transform 10% of its branches to a new format in next 6-12 monthsand
the bank has opened one such branch.

Karnataka Bank launches UPI app KBL-SMATRz


i. Mangaluru based Karnataka Bank has come up with a mobile application named KBL-
SMARTz built on the unified payments interface (UPI) platform of the National Payments
Corporation of India (NPCI).
ii. The App was launched by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer P Jayarama Bhat,
Karnataka Bank.
iii. The App enables users to perform the transactions on-the-go through this app, which is
available in the Google PlayStore.

IBM, Apple open first global development hub in India


i. American tech majors IBM and Apple jointly launched a global development hub called Garage
for iOS apps in Bengaluru to work with their Design locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Cupertino in
the US and Toronto in Canada.
ii. The hub Garage will help the clients to complete digital mobility projects as quickly as possible
as well as to spur the digital transformation in India.

Champ under Cars Om Swaroop creates Guinness World Record in Limbo Skating
Om Swaroop Gowda, A 7 years old young lad from Karnataka has entered the Guinness
World Record for longest distance limbo skating under the cars.
i. With a equilateral distance between the cars and ground, the lad covered 65.283 metre, which
is a World Record for time being.
ii. In a challenge show held in Bangalore, Om Swaroop successfully passed by 36 cars
simultaneously thus creating a new world record in limbo Skating.

Kannada actor Sanketh Kashi dead


Kannada comedy actor Sanketh Kashi died of a heart attack at a private hospital in

i. Kashi started his career with theatre and was known as Sanketh Kashi for his association
with Sanketh troupe, which was led by late actor Shankar Nag.
ii. He was 50 and he has acted in more than 140 films.

i. Public sector lender Vijaya Bank had launched e-deposit facility to facilitate term
deposits by customers in its bid to ramp up deposit base of the bank. E-deposit would facilitate
the existing Vijaya Bank customers to open term deposit accounts through e-banking facility.
ii. The three innovative information technology products had launched VPAYQWIK, Vijaya
*99# and V-eConnect+.
iii. Vijaya Bank aggressively focuses on increasing its CASA ratio through new client acquisition
and coming up with technology driven products to facilitate the same.

Karnataka Bank inks distribution pact with Birla Sun Life AMC
i. Karnataka Bank has inked a memorandum of understanding(MoU) with Birla Sun Life Asset
Management Company for distribution of mutual fund products.
ii. Birla Sun Life MF, will provide all market mutual fund plans through the branches of the bank.
iii. LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Company has also tied up with Karnataka Bank for
distribution of its mutual fund products. The distribution will be through over 730 branches of the
bank across India.

HAL gets membership of APAQG with voting rights


i. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been conferred the prestigious membership of
the Asia-Pacific Aerospace Quality Group (APAQG) under the category Full Member with
voting rights.
ii. India, the seventh nation to join the APAQG under TRHE International Aerospace Quality
Group (IAQG).Other Members of APAQG : China, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore
and Japan.

Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) successfully conducts test flight of Light Utility
Helicopter
i. Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) completed the first test flight of its an indigenously
developed prototype helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter(LUH) successfully.
ii. The test flight took place in Bengaluru and the helicopter hovered in the air for 15 minutes.

Coast Guard sets up air enclave in Mangaluru


i. The Coast Guard was prepared an air enclave to step up aerial surveillance of Karnataka
coast for helping in search and rescue operations and also to check maritime crimes.
ii. District Coast Guards Executive Officer Commandant Rajender Singh Sapal declared at a
press meet held in the Coast Guard office that the agency was confident of a new Air Enclave
being sanctioned for Mangalore.
iii. The two state-of-the-art surveillance radars were being installed on the light houses in
Bhartkal and Suratkal. The Indian Coast Guard through the Defence Estate Officer has paid
Rs.1.88 crore for the 15.21 acres of land.

Ankasamudra to become a conservation reserve


i. The Karnataka State Wildlife Board, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has decided to
declare Ankasamudra tank in Hagari Bommanahalli taluk as a bird conservation reserve.
ii. The Ankasamudra was well known for birds be it local or migratory as it is gaining fame
among bird watchers and naturalists. The conservation reserve is first of its kind in the entire
Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

Centre sanctioned Rs.100 Cr fund for road development works in Vijayapura District
i. The Union Government has ratified a fund of Rs.100crore for various road development works
in Vijayapura District under Central Road Fund was announced by Union Minister for Drinking

i. Former Minister Veeranna (76) awarded with the Sri Maharshi Valimiki Jayanti Award for
the year 2016-17 by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.The award carries a cash prize of
Rs. 5 lakh and a citation.
ii. Mr Veeranna hails from Koratagere in Tumakuru district and served as the Minister in the
Janata Party government and he held portfolios of small savings, transport, commerce and
industries and prisons.

Mangaluru International Airport rated best in Southern region


i. The Mangalore international airport here has been rated the best in southern regionand
won the third spot among all the 52 airports from across the country. The performances of all
the airports are rated on the basis of overall customer satisfaction.
ii. The Airports Authority of India conducts survey of all the airports once in six months through
external agency and in the latest survey the airport secured 4.72 marks out of 5 points.
iii. The survey ranks Chandigarh airport as the best in the country followed by Raipur. Third
slot has been shared by Mangaluru and Udaipur airports.
iv. The Tiruchi airport has ranked sixth at the all-India level in the nationwide survey that was
conducted for the period January to June by an agency commissioned by the Airports Authority
of India (AAI).

Karnatakas Almatti dam awarded by World Bank


i. Almatti dam, one of the largest reservoirs in Karnataka, was chosen for the World Banks
Award of Excellence for best utilisation of funds for renovation to enhance the strength of
the dam.
ii. The World Bank had granted Rs.72 crore to the Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited to
prevent seepage which could damage the dam.

ISRO started landing tests for Chandrayaan-2 mission


i. The Indian Space Research Organization started a series of ground and aerial tests linked to the
critical Moon landing of Chandrayaan-2 at Challakere in Chitradurga district. This Place is 400
km far away from Bengaluru.
ii. ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) is the lead centre for the second Moon mission. It has artificially
created close to ten craters to simulate the lunar terrain and test the Landers sensors.

Noted artist Yusuf Arakkal passed away


i. Renowned painter, sculptor and veteran of the contemporary art, Yusuf Arakkal passed
away at his residence morning in Bengaluru
ii.The artist recently released a book called Faces of Creativity, which is a comprehensive
collection of portraits of fellow artists.
iii.He was a Malayali painter based in Bengaluru. He took a diploma in painting from Karnataka

Second BRICS Communication Ministers meeting concluded in Bengaluru


i. Hosted for the first time by India the Second meeting of Communication
Ministers of BRICS countries concluded in Bengaluru on November 11, 2016. The two day

i. Europes largest manufacturer of home appliances, BSH Household Appliances Grouphas

ii. This centre will help BSH to further develop localised technologies for the Indian market and to
become the heart of product development for the Asia Pacific region as well as emerging countries
in South America and Africa.

Marta Jakimowicz Lifetime Achievement 2016 by the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy


i. Marta Jakimowicz Poland-born art expert was selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award
2016 by the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy on 10 November 2016.All the winners will be
honoured with the cash prize of 50000 rupees. This is the second successive year when the
award winners would be given a sum of Rs. 50,000.
ii. To celebrate the golden jubilee of the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy, a childrens art
camp will be organized on November 14 in 13 districts of Karnataka.

ISRO Conduts Tests For Chandrayaan-II Mission


i. The Indian Space Research Organsiation (ISRO) Chairman A S Kiran Kumar, on
November 11, 2016, revealed that ISRO has started to conduct the test for its second moon
mission, Chandrayaan-II at its center in Challakere, Karnataka.
ii. Chandrayaan-2 mission is tentatively set for late 2017 or early 2018 and includes soft-landing
on Moon and moving a rover on its surface.
iii. The lead centre for the second Moon mission, ISRO Satellite Centre or ISAC, has artificially
created several craters, resembling the terrain of the Moon, to test instruments and sensors on
the lander of Chandrayaan-2.

i. Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) developed by DRDO named Rustom-2 completed its

DRDO.It is a medium-altitude long-endurance UAV (MALE UAV). A MALE UAV is one that flies in

Karnataka Government has removed restriction on night shift for women
i. The state government of Karnataka has removed restrictions on allowing women to work in
night shifts in all sectors in a move to provide equal opportunities for women in all sectors.
ii. Currently, women are allowed to be employed in night shifts only in IT and ITES sectors. The
present labour regulations dont allow employers to deploy women on work between 8 pm and 6
am. However, the government made an exemption to IT and ITES companies in 2003 responding
to a demand from the IT sector.
iii. The Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961 and the Factories Act 1948
have been amended to make provision for women to work in night shift.

Karnataka CM inaugurates first air ambulance service in Bengaluru


i. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally launched the state's first air ambulance H130
helicopters at HAL Airport in Bengaluru on December 16, 2016.
ii. The air ambulance service will start its operation from January 2017.The emergency number of
air ambulance service is 155350.
Cost of the Service:
Individual subscription - Rs 9,000 per Year
Family subscription - Rs 18,000 per Year
Individuals without subscription - Rs 1.75 lakh per hour.

Karnataka Flags Off 25 Bio-Diesel Buses


i. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has launched 25 bio-diesel
buses on December 25, to reduce pollution level emitted by diesel buses. 25 luxury multi-
axle Scania buses were flagged off by the state Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy at the
KSRTC depot.

ii.The 25 new buses will be deployed on the Bengaluru-Kundapur, Bengaluru-Bidar,

would save about Rs. 80 lakh each year.

decades.
iii. Some of his leading movies include Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan and Ambarish.
