1. Chapel
Remodel
The Chapel remodel
will improve the
acoustics by
spraying sound-
absorbent plaster
onto the existing
plaster ceiling and
walls. For further
information, see the
Ronchamp, the French Chapel by LeCorbusier that inspired
acoustics report that the design for the PLTS Chapel.
is included in the
appendix.
Windows in Ronchamp In addition to fixes for the acoustics, new windows will be added to
give better daylighting and views: small windows on the south and east
walls, and larger windows in the classroom area. A new, track-mounted
folding partition will replace the existing trackless demountable
partition between the classroom and the Chapel. The existing partition
is very labor-intensive to remove or replace, and does not provide
adequate acoustical separation. The new partition will follow a curved
contour line on the ceiling so that all of the panels can be of equal
height.
The raised floor areas for chancel and choir will be removed to allow
more flexibility in rearranging space. The Chapel is a lab for
seminary students, and flexibility allows them to test a variety of spatial
arrangements for worship services.
The existing Baroque style organ sounds wonderful, but clashes
visually with the simple modern style of the Chapel. It is suggested
that the organ be moved to a location where it can be at least partially
screened from view with an acoustically transparent fabric. The alcove
next to the sacristy door was originally intended to be used as a screen
for organ pipes and may be large enough for the organ.

A new exterior color scheme will be developed for the

Chapel, to better relate to the other buildings on
campus. A terra-cotta color is suggested for the
prominent edges of the roof and the underside of the
roof soffit, to tie in with the tile roofs on the historic
houses. The same color would be used on the interior

ceilings, perhaps as a border around the acoustical
spray.
The aesthetics of the end of the Chapel roof, facing
Founders and Giesy Hall and the rest of campus, will
be improved by changing the louvers and/or adding a
mural, artwork, or sculptural features.
The work will also include relevant items from the no-
brainer list. Seismic upgrade may be needed,
although a 1991 report by Gallagher Associates rates
the existing structure as fair to good
It should be noted that one of the property lines that
divides the 6 contiguous PLTS parcels goes right
through the middle of the chapel. The City may

2. Community Room and Campus Quad

Student life will revolve around the
three classrooms: Giesy 1, the Chapel
classroom, and the proposed new
classroom in Founders Annex (see 10.
Founders Annex Classroom page 33).
These three classrooms form a triangle
that defines the daytime student area on
the upper campus.
This triangle will be enhanced by
removing the existing road that divides
it. See 4a. Parking, Road, and
Infrastructure page 18 for a more
complete description of the road change.
This will allow the creation of a new
campus quad plaza that wraps
around the south and west sides of
Founders hall and connects all the
buildings in this area. New stairs and an
accessible ramp will connect the plaza to
the level of the Chapel.

the way to Giesy (see 4b. Hillside Path
and Campus Spine page 21 for a more complete
description). The Community Room will open directly
onto this plaza. To the west of this plaza will be a grassy
area that can function as open space and overflow
parking for special events.
An option to use Founders Great Hall as the community
room lounge was discussed and rejected at the charrette
because of two problems. The floor of the Great Hall is
13 above the level of the classroom triangle and future
plaza. It was feared that students would not use the
lounge because it would not be visible from the new
plaza and would require going up a lot of stairs. The
other reason is that the Great Hall works very well now
for formal occasions in conjunction with the Presidents
residence, and it would be good to keep it for this use.
The community room needs to be available for informal

who are not involved in the meeting.

The selected alternative for the

Community Room is a new
addition to the lower level of
Founders Hall, fronting onto the
new plaza. This new building will
have the same floor level as the
main level of Giesy. Its roof will
be developed as a new deck for
the Great Hall, to replace the
current flagstone patio. The
building will include stairs and a
wheelchair lift to bring people up
to the roof deck, which will
become the new front door to the
public end of Founders Hall.

space for informal dialog between the entire seminary community.
Multiple doors to the plaza will encourage people to come in, and
could be left open on a warm day. The 1200 sq. ft. room will be the
right size: large enough that it doesnt seem full when occupied
by a few people, and not so large as to seem institutional.
The Great Hall will retain its current function as a formal meeting
room to be used in conjunction with the Presidents residence.
This project will also include excavation of the area between Giesy
and Founders Hall for the northern end of the campus quad. The
rest of the campus quad will be developed as part of project 4b. The
width of the existing very narrow walkway will be increased to 12,
with benches or a low seat-wall on one side. The additional width
will open up views of the Chapel from the top of the hillside path.
