Why do people Bully?

Bullying is a common occurrence in most schools. What is bully?

Bully is an unwanted, aggressive behaviour among school aged
children that involves a real or perceived on power imbalance.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors
or attacking someone physically or verbally.

Bullying occurs when a group of students isolate one student and get
on-lookers to support or remain neutral. Bullies taunt and tease
before physically bullying the target. Bullying occurs in any age of
group but is particularly prominent between the ages of 9 to 18.
Bullying types cover the range of physical, emotional, verbal, cyber
and sexual bullying.

Mental behaviour is one of the main causes of bullying. It involves

an imbalance of power and strength as most of the bullies are
physically aggressive and hot-headed. When bullies feel powerless
and afraid, they are much more likely to be aggressive, therefore
they will want to feel powerful and in control. They want to be
dominant and to be more noticeable to others. They may not even
understand how wrong their behaviour is. Most of the bullies see
their own behaviour as justified. They view violence in a positive
way. As an example, bullies find satisfaction when causing an injury
to someone.

Family issues are the main factor of bullying. According to

psychologist, bullies normally live in homes situation where there is
a lack of warmth and little monitoring from their parents. By
receiving attention and warmth from parents, children tends to
understand feeling of connectedness and emphaty better as
compassion and emphaty seem to be bullies main weakness.
In addition, discipline also does contribute to bullying. Some parents
might approach discipline differently causing their children to be
able to get away with bad behaviours. Parents might also be a little
permissive in their daily life causing them to be unable to set limits
on their children's behaviours. Last but not least, individuals who
grow up with harsh discipline do not always understands the reasons
behind the strictness so they feel threatened and perceive the way
they are treated as abusive and bullying.

Bullying is a serious matter that can affect the ability of students to

progress academically and socially. Peer pressure, mental behaviour
and family issues are the main causes of bullying. In the course of
growing up from a child ti an adolescent teenager to an adult, some
form of physical horseplay and innocent emotional teasing are
inevitable. While some harmless teasing is a part and parcel of
growing up, bullying is a serious concern and must be recognised
and stopped immediately.
