CHE 401 Transport Phenomena Assignment # 1 (Dated: 3rd September 2017)
Momentum Transport & Vector and Tensor Algebra

1 Under what circumstances can a fluid be treated as Continuum?

2 A stationary fluid is placed between two parallel plates each having length L and width W and
separated by distance . The lower plate is set to motion with a constant velocity V in the +x
direction by the application of a constant fore F under steady-state conditions. Write shell
momentum balance equation to derive the Newtons law of Viscosity. Draw the shear stress and
velocity profiles.

3 For steady-state axial flow of an incompressible fluid through an annular region between two
coaxial cylinders of radii R and R , derive expressions for the momentum flux and velocity
distribution as shown below. Derive expression for the average velocity, mass flow rate and the
force exerted by fluid on the wetted surfaces.
P R P R 2 1 2
rz 2 1 / , vz 1 2 2 2 ln 1 / , ( r / R) and 2
2L 4 L 2 ln(1 / )

4 Differentiate between pressure, normal stress and shear stress. Write the nine components of
momentum flux tensor = vv + p + . State the significance of each term?

5 For flow of two immiscible incompressible fluids under the influence of horizontal pressure
gradient, through a thin slit of length L and width W, derive the expressions for momentum flux
and velocity profiles.

6 Derive the equation of continuity in

(a) Cartesian coordinates
(b) Cylindrical coordinates.

7 Derive the equation of motion in

(a) Cartesian coordinates
(b) Cylindrical coordinates.

b. Dyadic product of two vectors: [v ] and [v ]T

c. Double Dot Product of two Tensors: [ : ]
d. Single Dot Product of two Tensors: [.]
e. Dot product of a Vector and Tensor: [ .v ]

9 Starting with the equations in Cartesian system and using suitable transformations, transform
(a) The equation of continuity into cylindrical coordinates.
(b) The equation of motion into cylindrical coordinates.

10 Derive the transformation of equation of motion from total derivative form to material derivative
form in Cartesian coordinates.
