L6 BACTERIAL GROWTH AND DEATH

Bacteria undergo exponential growth via binary fission (1 cell 2 cells 4 cells 8 cells.)

LAG PHASE
Initial phase
Detoxifying medium
Eg.: # of cells at the beginning equals # of cells
At the end of lag phase

LOG PHASE
Rapid exponential growth
GENERATION TIME
o Time it takes 1 cell to divide into 2
o This is determined during log phase

STATIONARY PHASE
Nutrients used up
Toxic products like acids and alkalis begin to accumulate
# new cells equals the # of dying cells

AEROBIC & ANAEROBIC GROWTH

Some bacteria can grow in the presence of oxygen (aerobes and facultatives), but other die in presence of
oxygen (anaerobes)
The use of oxygen by bacteria generates toxic products such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide
Aerobes and facultatives have enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase that detoxify these
products, but anaerobes do not & are killed in presence of oxygen
The response to oxygen is importan criterion for classifying bacteria and has great practical significance because
specimens from patients must be incubated in the proper atmosphere for the bacteria to grow

OBLIGATE AEROBES
Nocardia
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. AERu in aerobe)
Mycobacterium. TB.
Bacillus
(Nagging Pests Must Breathe)

INTRACELLULAR
Obligate Intracellular
o Ricketssia
o Chlamydia
o Cant make ATP
Facultative Intracellular
o Mycobacterium
o Brucella
o Francisella
o Listeria
o Yersinia
o Legionella
o Salmonella
Stay inside (cells) when its Really Cold
L6 BACTERIAL GROWTH AND DEATH
FERMENTATION OF SUGARS
In clinical lab, identification of important human pathogens is based on fermentation of certain sugars
Eg. Neisseria gonorrhoeae & Neisseria Meningitidis
o Can be distinguished from each other on the basis of fermentation of either Glucose or Maltose and
E.Coli can be differentiated Salmonella & Shigella on the basis of fermentation of Lactose
FERMENTATION
o Ref. to break down of sugar pyruvic acid lactic acid
o Also ref. to as glycolytic cycle
o Process by which facultative bacteria generate ATP in the absence of Oxygen

Facultative and Anaerobic bacteria ferment but aerobes, which can grow in the presence of oxygen, dont.
