NASA, U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CELEBRATE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH STAMP UNVEILING AND OTHER EVENTS

On Monday, April 10, 2000, five new commemorative postage

stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service will be unveiled in a
ceremony at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, to
celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 10th anniversary.

The day-long celebration begins at 9 a.m. EDT with remarks

from members from the Maryland Congressional delegation, NASA
Administrator Daniel Goldin, Goddard Center Director Al Diaz and
others.

The stamp unveiling will begin at approximately 11a.m. EDT.

Postmaster General William J. Henderson will unveil the new
stamps. The five stamps feature images of the Eagle Nebula, the
Ring Nebula, the Lagoon Nebula, the Egg Nebula and Galaxy NGC
1316, all taken by Hubble over the past 10 years.

The first of two afternoon programs begins at 1:30 p.m. EDT.

The program, titled "Hubble Space Telescope and Beyond," is hosted
by Dr. Edward Weiler, Associate Administrator for Space Science,
NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC. Panelists include: Dr. Bruce
Margon, professor of astronomy at the University of Washington,
Seattle; Dr. Heidi Hammel, senior astronomer at the Space Science
Institute in Boulder, CO; Dr. Jeff Hester, professor of astronomy
at Arizona State University, Tempe; Dr. Duccio Macchetto, the
European Space Agency (ESA) senior scientist and head of science
policies at the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, MD;
and Dr. Alan Dressler, senior astronomer from Carnegie
Observatories, Pasadena, CA.
The second afternoon session, to begin at 3:45 p.m. EDT,
"Servicing Hubble Space Telescope," will be moderated by Weiler
and Joseph Rothenberg, Associate Administrator for Space Flight,
NASA Headquarters. Astronauts who have flown on previous Hubble
serving missions, including Dr. Jeff Hoffman, Dr. John Grunsfield
and Claude Nicollier (ESA), will give personal reflections on
their experience with the telescope.

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard the Space

Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990, and deployed on April 25,
1990. In the last decade, Hubble's rapid-fire rate of discoveries
and cosmic images has profoundly changed the science of astronomy,
and astounded and inspired people around the world.

All activities will take place in the Goddard Bldg. 8

auditorium.

Because seating will be limited, news media interested in

attending the event should contact Nancy Neal at 301/286-0039 by
noon EDT on April 7.

The morning remarks and stamp unveiling will be carried live

on NASA Television. NTV is broadcast on GE-2, transponder 9C,
located at 85 degrees West longitude, with vertical polarization.
Frequency is on 3880.0 MHz, with audio on 6.8 MHz.
